When I practice at home, I must say that I'll end up spending maybe 10 mins on slapping but it seems an unconcious thing. I don't plan it. Just sort of end up doing it. Get the OP's point about demos though. It's all overdone.

Seriously cheesy listings but, I think she's quite attractive. Certainly no space hopper.

My opinion, for what it's worth is that your vocalist can get there with a little bit of work. If, as you say, he connects with the audience, you are not going out as an out and out trib band, but a pub band doing possibly only, or a majority of U2 numbers, I think you should all stick with it. Musically, it works very well. He may be a huge U2 fan but maybe he's not actually sung any of these songs in previous bands. Like him or not, Bono's a hard act to follow, but not impossible. It's only anal musos that are going to smirk about a song being a semitone or two down. Fair enough if you're charging £25 for a trib ticket, but you're not. He's actually got some quality to his voice on lower registers with a nicely controlled vibrato. All he needs is to go for it with confidence on this stuff. If you have to change keys, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll kill the song due to not having use of open strings etc on guitar. I used to do some Police stuff in another band. The guitarist would use a capo when we needed to change keys due to vocals. Won't work 100% of the time but it's another weapon in the arsenal. Most pub punters will enjoy the performance due to the songs you're playing. And of course, no one wants 8 months of hard work down the pan.

Songs you thought you'd never enjoy playing

Abba stuff. Hate the band, appreciate the writing talent, absolutely LOVE the basslines. Rutger's the man. -
Played a blinding gig last night...

I sympathise with both of you. It can all get very one sided at times. Makes me think that one day I'll just say f*** it and do home recording on my own and the odd dep. Seems in both your cases you have a good thing going with each of your drummers so maybe try and find some like minded people to join up with. -
Lost the final of the battle of the bands last night by one point. Oh well. The winners were a really good originals trio, very polished and they'd seriously thought about their songwriting with regard to their line up. At no point did I, or anyone I spoke to, think, they could have done with another guitar or a keyboard on that one etc. They just tipped the voting by slipping in a really funky version of Voodoo chile, their only cover of the night. (Can't beat the old favourites) I was using their bassplayer's Trace 500 head and a 1x15 cab. I used to use a TE rig and then moved to Eden for about 4 years and now, onto a Markbass 3x10 due to weight and have been really happy with it however, last night, I really found it a welcome change to be back on TE gear. So easy to get a great sound. Quite nostalgic. Although it wasn't me that had to load it into a car afterwards so maybe it was just selective memory. Still, a great night all round.

Sounds fine for the era to me. Bit of a floppy string maybe with over enthusiastic playing. As someone said, probably done in one take, and he probably only got $25 for the session. Has a great raw feel to it in my opinion. -
Thanks for that, great stuff, great feel to it. Love it. Although, just checked out three live Youtube vids and each one has a different drummer. They're not a funk version of Spinal Tap are they?

Bass Lines That Everyone Recognises
leschirons replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
I would guess the man in the street is only likely to put a name to the song where the bassline actually starts the song. I don't think the punters would recognise anything I play, but then again nor do the band. -
I do loads of summer gigs in restaurants, outdoors. The bain of my life....chip fryers. They never fail to to trip the electrics.

A taste of honey with a hunny playing a jazz...
leschirons replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
You're too ill to think about bassplayers that look like that. -
Know what you mean. Sometimes its a pleasant surprise to find that you've nailed something easily, that you thought was going to be harder. I thought I was going to have an issue with Going underground some years ago as it sounded like a lot of work to get it right. The right sound and feel were the more important things.
I was a bit bored with the pickguard on my MusicMan Bongo. I went to a metal fabrication company and brought the old pickguard and asked them to duplicate it in metal. Total cost: £20. It didn't fit perfectly first time but they were very kind and tweaked it a bit for me at no charge. Fits great now. I buried it in the garden for a few days to rust a little. Then I piled dead leaves and left it for another couple of days. Below is the result. What do you guys think? Success? Abysmal failure? - martin
Seriously cool, a James Trussart Rustobongo
Very close - I think it's a Helicon, but you'd have to be a certifiable tuba wonk to know that. I was very disappointed with both of EC's numbers - I'd expect someone with Clapton's financial clout to be able to hire a piano player who could play a decent stride solo for a number like this, but the pianist in his band was clearly not up to it and Jools (who definitely is) had obviously been told to toe the line. I think the punk band got the sh*t end of the stick - only one minute 20 of their excellent stuff in order to make way for a second turgid Clapton tune. So far this series I make that two really decent acts - Imelda Mae and Bellowhead.
It looked like Chris Stainton on piano. Could be wrong, but if it was, that is a man with serious and respected track record. Maybe he was also just bored out of his brains.

As it's usually me that gives the glare of death to others who cock up, I make sure I don't make the same mistake twice. If anybody mentions my cock up afterwards I simply say "Yeah, thought I'd just try something a little different in that one but it didn't work so I'll just play it straight from now on"

A while ago, I did own a 7 string bass but it was strung B-F. I did not use it in a band situation, not due to anything other than that's not why I bought it. I mainly gig with a 5 string nowdays and the low B is enough for me (and my cones) I personally would have no use for a low F# but took great pleasure and amusement from the high F. Being a guitarist too, it was great for tapping, chords etc. Don't know how well defined the lowest notes would be on the F# but as you play the music you do, I guess it would work for you.

I would guess that most players on here with a little experience and currently playing in a band of some sort actually have quite a lot of theory under their belts but just don't realise it because they didn't take formal lessons or troll through theory books. There is a big difference between actually not having any theory and just not knowing all the terminology. Most have some sort of theory albeit self taught via experience but it's probably subconcious. I would imagine that the two go hand in hand to compliment each other.
