Personal taste and aesthetics are a funny thing. I just wondered if there are any elements of bass design that folks just can't get past... Things that mar otherwise fabulous basses... For me there are three things. The bridge on a Lakland. I have a chum who has the most lovely Lakland 5-string. Sounds amazing, plays like a dream but for some reasaon I just can't abide the look of the big oval back plate on the bridge. Same for all Lakland's models. I couldn't have one on my bass. Therefore, for me, gear options are cut down by one top maker just because it doesn't do it for me... Totally irrational, coz they are lovely basses. Varnished fingerboards (and maple ones for that matter). Just never liked the feel of a varnished board or the look of maple over rosewood. Modern single cuts. For some reason they almost all look wrong to my eye. I have a chum with an amazing Curbow single cut. Again plays great and sounds great but the look just puts me off. In fact I can only think of one single cut where I thought, cool looking bass - an Adamovitch played by the bassist in my nephew's band. So what is it that, for no real good reason, puts you off a whole raft of bass designs?
You said exactly what I think about Lakland. Nice to look at, but the bridge looks tacky . ( ducks out of way;)) -
Can't see anything on my iPad .

At Donington monsters of rock festivals ( only one dayers) , we had the Bailey Brothers . "Rock not pop". Juvenile and atrocious . A different type of dj I know TBH , not all of these modern dj's are bad. Some are excellent . I think there is a skill involved , keeping hundreds/ thousands of people happy. As for nightclubs ; used to be mainly for soul boys , ( and girls) and smoothies. Oh, and don't forget the fights . Don't miss them at all. Now , the youngsters have their weekends in town centres . You know the rest.

I love flamenco on the acoustic guitars . It just looks so difficult , but the players do it with ease. Some of it can go on a bit on record , but some is great . Recommend me some good stuff to listen to.

Do bassists want to hear bass solos?
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
I want to hear good music. If a bass solo sounds good then by all means! I don't care at all what instruments are used to make nice sounds. I care about the nice sounds.
+1 from me also -

Speaking on a hard rock/ metal angle; When I started going to gigs back on the nwobhm guitar and drum solos were the norm. Especially big / outdoor gigs . I remember angelwich frontman doing a guitar solo at their gigs and he was dreadful ( probably the only person at ghe gigs who thought so). Ted nugent on the other hand, played entertaining guitar without excessive noodling . The power is in the song. Go forward to Metallica'live sh@t binge. & purge, all the band did a solo of some sort . Seek and destroy lasted ages so everyone gets a rest because of a 3 hour set. They could've done us all a favour and cut the set to 90 mins and saved us from the solos. With joe satrini , if stu Hamm is with him , then it's probably the best time to see a bass solo . Sheehan as mentioned also. When I saw scorpions on the crazy world tour, there was a solo there too. Unexpected and uninteresting . It reminded me of slap ( a trend that everyone is doing a bass solo for the sake of it). At dream theatre , it's expected but it's mainly inaudible and cr@p. Rammstein are my fave live band , probably ever and just put on a fantastic live show . Maiden don't bother either.. Kiss and Crüe do it , just for tackiness . I would expect to see bass solos at Jazz gigs , and would welcome it -
Back in the early days of gigging ('80s) I had a peavey head amp. Got it for about £5o iirc. Great , big and heavy . A few years down the line , a friend of mine sold his peavy widow( or was it scorpion?) combo to me . All that had was an annoying hum as soon as I switched it on . Sounded good live when he used it . Just not good for home use I guess. So I sold it. No idea where it was made , but it was cr@p
Our drummer is only in one band. But that's because he's such a cantankerous git that no-one else could possibly put up with him - the miserable, boorish, anti-social, pessimistic, churlish, misanthropic old codger! But he's a really good drummer.
You play with ginger baker?
-
Probably the hardest part of band life - getting and keeping Mr. Or Mrs . Drums . I could've suggested getting a keyboard player that can program drums . The problem there , is you have to find that person. Another mountain to climb. Hope it works out for ya anyway
