RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE

I have experience of the Boss SP404sx , SP404 mk2 and an older kaossilator . These are really for home use into a computer imho , or clubbing DJ’s FWIW, I started off on the Boss SP202 which I still have . Love it for its direct simplicity . I then purchased SP404sx which is still easy to use and has lots of great effects , plus loads of sample time . Still looking for original 1 gb boss sound card . I then purchased the SP 404 mk 2 ..and haven’t used it ! Only to update it last April ! It’s too much for me , but is fantastic if you have patience and enjoy menu diving ! Boss give free software updates on the 4/4 annually. I should really give it ago as it has usbc , works with iPad and pairs with the iPad koala app ! As for the older kaossilator , I won it in a bid on eBay ! No power , and seller soon had it returned ! It looked cheaper , and felt cheap and nasty and left me disappointed . Well it would have done , but luckily I dodged a bullet and got refunded in full . Cheap plastic rubbish

This popped up on my YouTube feed yesterday . I don’t know who the bass player is doing the demos . She has a lot of knowledge,while going through many basses . I immediately thought of the ME-50 B which hasn’t really been out that long . Similar price too it seems . As a person who practices at home these days and records stuff on GarageBand, this seems good . I don’t know how fiddly this would be to use in terms of menu diving etc. The ME50b is more bulky ( downside ) but seems straightforward otherwise . It looks like the GX-1B would be usb powered like the zoom B3 unlike the ME50 B which needs to be run on batteries or 9v power supply . Does the GX1 B have a looper ? It’s good that both of the units mentioned can be controlled by the Boss apps if that floats . I don’t think I’d bother though as it means more menu diving .

Speaking of basses tuned BEAD , some of you may have noticed Warwick Taranis Bass tuned this way from the factory . I saw the YouTube review by Jonny Dribble ,who thought it was overproduced for what it was . Trouble with the Chinese Warwick’s is that they never seem to be in stock for some reason. Speaking of 5 strings , I’m torn between getting one to complete the collection …or just forget about it due to my BEAD Warwick 🤔

I’m probably minority here but apart from the white one mentioned , they don’t do anything for me .More knobs than the Houses of Parliament. Is there really any need for them ?? Doubtful if the punters at the dog and duck would notice much difference tbh

I saw Johnny Dibble reviewing the HZ on YouTube. I asked him what he thought was best out of that and the cort space 5 He said that the feel of the Cort was better feel wise ,but the sound of the HZ was better than the Cort. It’s great that headless basses are becoming more popular at last . However it does seem that there doesn’t seem to be one that covers everything up to the £1,500 mark. I stand to be corrected of course ,but it seems that people are not happy with the Ibanez EHB pickups ,the pick guards of the Hils or the pickups on the space 5 etc The quality control of all those basses seem to be criticised too . Maybe with persistence from those companies and others something really good may emerge within the next couple of years .

I stopped listening to that station in covid times 😷. I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘White Rabbit ‘ is in there , which is as dull as the prime minister 🤢🤮 Does Paul Ross still advertise Mac Donald’s cheeseburgers 🍔 ??

Watching this thread with interest . I heard a couple of porcupine tree tracks a few years ago ,and it wasn’t my bag . I have 2 Tangerine Dream cd Boxsets that he remastered, and he did a great job ! He is immensely talented both as an artist in a band situation and as a solo artist …plus as a producer ! Many hats. I stumbled across 2 live tracks on my YouTube feed over the last couple of weeks ..’Fear of A blank Planet ‘ and another track I’ve forgotten right now . Watch that track ! A fantastic performance. I’m trying to find out anything that sounds like that, and will purchase the right albums . The only thing I’m concerned about , is if he / porcupines tree etc have released patchy albums and that purchasing single tracks on downloads would be better ..

When purchasing from Amazon, sometimes the Amazon seller uses Royal Mail or EVRI ! I got caught out a couple of times ,and notice the “Amazon” service deteriorating because of this . ( Not Royal Mail, but EVRI in my case) . The tell tale signs of delays and unavailable tracking ,and even stuff delivered a day later is way out of line ! I always have to double/ triple check what courier is being used .I shouldn’t have to ! I saw a big company selling speaker stands for my Sonos speakers on eBay . Good price etc. . Then I looked at the feedback and declined their offers ,because they use EVRI They lost a sale but are probably oblivious as to why . The bigger a commission gets ,the worse the customer service is imho

Rega turntables are great , and look real cool imho . For the money you can’t go wrong . The planar 2 I had at the time was a big upgrade from the previous Dual CDs-505 I had. What I have noticed over the last decade or so, is the expansion of quality and choice of colours etc in the £250-£500 price point . A decent cartridge works wonders also as mentioned above .

You mentioned the Rega Planar 2 ,and you don’t mind considering vintage . No doubt this page will attract the usual audiophile beard twitchers who will give great advice. Fwiw I purchased a Rega Planar 2 brand new back in the mid ‘90s . The annoying thing for me at the tine , was having to remove the platter to change speed when going from 331/3 - 45 rpm . I bumped into an old friend at the time who told me he knew someone who was selling a pink triangle turntable .They had a reputation in the early ‘90s apparently. I was told the sound would blow the Rega 2 out of the water! He was right ! I had to purchase a rega bias tone arm for it ,and an ortofon or nagaoka cartridge . Anyway , apart from the lid ( which had a reputation for being fragile ) the turntable is a beast ! The model I have is the little pink thing . Innuendos aside ,they are always on eBay and worth checking out . I’m wondering what the modern day alternative would be 🤔..
