My first though was that I'd base it on a 5er - wide neck & designed to take extra string tension. Maybe I should try this on my Peavey Zephyr... Jon.

Lovely. I think you got the better end of that swap. Get on to the Vintage Ibby FB group and see if anyone's got any spare tuners in their parts box. Jon.

Cool-looking bass. Not familiar with this exact model but it's very close to the Aria Avante Steve Bailey sig: Dunno how cheap it is - but I'd buy it, always liked the look of these. You might get some info from one of the APII Facebook groups: https://www.facebook...oups/AriaProII/ https://www.facebook...96371477217872/ Jon.

Oh, I like that - way more sensible than the original. J.

I remember these from BW a few years ago, the guy in the link above got a batch built for some forum members. Bach do - or at least did - some nice stuff, including rather lovely interpretations of certain Basses That Must Not Be Named. Or at least, sold on BC... Jon.
I mention it again, just because I am a little in love with it, but my latest B2B is a P/J and very nice too.
Did you post any pics of it? Never seen a P/J B2! J.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Bassassin replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The seller admits the logo's a dodgy sticker, at least. Quite amusing how he's stuck a bit of insulating tape over the MIJ stamp on the neckplate! Grant/Grantsons were mostly pretty low-end stuff, had a few myself (admittedly not an EB-2) and they were nothing special. This will be a plywood Chushin build, same as most Columbus & Avon of the early 70s era. The mudbucker will be a low-output single-coil rattling around in that huge square case. J. -
Don't think they ever did a J/J B2A, unfortunately. Would far prefer that to the nasal EMG guitar pickups in mine. J.

I like that. It's a Jack with a head, basically. Jon.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Bassassin replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Just so we don't have to go through this whole thing again, this is the beginning of the discussion last time it came up: http://basschat.co.u.../page__st__3270 Post 3271, in case the page changes when it updates. The discussion does not, in my opinion, bear being re-heated, as there is nothing new to add. For the record, I pride myself in being an equal-opportunities bigot, and would prefer to offend everybody in equal measure regardless of race or religion. To that end I welcome use of terms such as YankW@nk, BritSh!t and KoreaDiarrhoea. So if any BC members with a more varied and colourful vocabulary than my own could come up with offensive and disparaging descriptors for instruments made in Italy, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Brazil, Germany or indeed any other country where the bass guitar is manufactured, I would welcome their contributions. That is all. As you were. J. -

Bassassin replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
We've had this discussion. This term appears to be something Americans tend to take offence at - possibly a subconscious manifestation of collective guilt toward the victims of their nuclear war - but in the UK is not an offensive expression, merely an ironic one. Irony being a linguistic device entirely absent from the North American lexicon, as far as I am able to tell. When we had this discussion before it was concluded that the title should stay for the reasons Happy Jack has clearly stated above. Being offended on behalf of somebody else (who almost certainly doesn't feel offended, because they're not actually being offended) was not considered to be a valid reason to change it. It's a big, ugly world out there Jazzyvee, full of genuinely horrible people doing unspeakably awful and brutally real things to get all upset about. The title of this topic is not one of them. Jon. -
What's this, a modded Blazer, a bitsa or something else? Only 80 quid. https://www.gumtree....tar-/1160831642
RS800 Roadster with a wonky scratchplate & a mudbucker. I'd pay 80 notes for that, if it plays well. J. -

There is of course an excellent Rickenfakers FB group, where every aspect of Rickenfakery can be openly discussed. J.

Highfox - it's perfectly fine to show pics of Fakers, discuss them, whatever - we just can't offer them for sale, or discuss where they can be bought. Same goes for real Ricks, amusingly. Jon.
Don't know if this is Japanese but it's a Hohner P copy and it looks old. Pictures aren't very detailed but it's close to me in Plymouth and pickup only. http://www.ebay.co.u...ssAAOSwHxVW8Cwv Wondering if worth a punt.
Yes it's MIJ & yes, it's worth a punt. Hohners of this era were made by Moridaira and are very nice indeed - some little guy called Rover - or is it Prince? Some dog's name anyway - is quite well-known for playing one of their Tele copies! Hard to tell from the pics but this one is probably mid-late 70s. Later Hohners (Arbor series & early Professionals) were Korean and not to the same standard initially. Jon. -
Well, they're not exactly ten-a-penny, and to balance it out they are exceptionally high-quality. Mine is still the bass I pick up most often at home - and I do have some considerable choice! With luck the electronics problem will turn out to be something straightforward - the seller doesn't give the impression he has much of an idea what to look for. Interesting that the bridge has been replaced on yours (with a high-quality Gotoh, same as those used on early MIJ Ibanez SRs), and I wonder if this is because it had the same high-action issue as mine did when I got it. I filed the saddle slots on mine to get it down, but a lower-profile bridge might have been a quicker fix. Apart from the electronics yours is identical to mine - a later production than Bakithi's which looks to be an early Yamaki-built example: The most obvious differences are the pickup placement - J unit very close to the bridge, and P unit non-reversed and nearer the neck - and the v/v/t/t + selector passive electronics, making the bass a B-40, according to our US correspondent upthread. It occurs to me that with the active circuit (assuming it works) & pickup placement on yours, you might struggle to nail Bakithi's tone. I'd probably bin the actives if they don't work, and wire it v/v/t with a phase reverse on the P unit. J.
-
Ahh, depends really. My kneejerk is to say yes - considering how rare these things are, any major modding seems just - wrong! However, I think I'm right in thinking it's a Bakithi thing for you? In which case I do understand why you'd want it fretless... Is this yours? Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Bassassin replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Well - that's a pretty extreme way of removing a headstock logo! Cheap for Fleabay certainly, not for these parts though: http://basschat.co.u...dropped-to-l60/ C'mon - sixty quid? No idea why it's still here. J. -
If there's not a stupid secret reserve on this, it could be a proper bargain - looks in great nick, and these don't come up very often. Particularly not the Banezes! Not sure if they are DiMarzios on these - my SB-40 of a similar vintage doesn't have them but it's possible, lots of MIJ from this era do. Jon.
-
Very nice, looks quality, and would happily give a home to that myself! I've encountered the Rally brand a few times over the years in random Ebay searches but never seen one at close quarters. Did a bit of digging & found this: http://www.straus.co.kr/bass.htm Still a current model, it would seem. Wonder if there's a current UK importer? Jon.
Woolies Special. Cost about £25.00 in the mid-70s. Unfortunately only worth the same today.
You'd be surprised how collectable some of these things have become. I'm not a fan (JapCrap got a lot better) but looking at this guitar, it's a Kawai/Teisco build - the "gold foil" pickups fitted to this are particularly sought after and alone can sell for rather more than you'd expect: http://www.ebay.co.u...G-/151939046632 I have found similar guitars to this for a tenner at the car boot, hosed them down & flipped them for £150+. Trust me, there's a hipster out there who'd bite your arm off for this. Jon.
