1.
That's a helluva lot of money... for a starting price... I know why they are back in business - license to print money by trading on the name? It will be interesting seeing how this pans out - back in the old Wal days, the competition wasn't as rife as it is now... I hope they manage to recapture the early Wal days though. It's good to get some UK luthiers some worldwide coverage! Going for a lie down now... can't quite believe that starting price. I wonder what a fully loaded example is likely to cost!?

That's a pretty cynical attitude isn't it? Believe me, whoever you are, and whatever "name" you own, custom building high-end basses (or those short scale six string things that I can't remember the term for), is never, ever going to fall into the "license to print money" category. Phil
Gotta agree with Phil on this one... Having known Paul Herman for a number of years from back in the days when he worked for Wal & Pete, he's just not that kind of person. And without Paul agreeing to take this on with whatever element of risk there is that comes with it - as there always is when you start a business - I'm sure it's going to be some while before he's just 'printing money'! I went to have a look around the new factory/workshop back in May and it's really fabulous, but it obviously required significant investment to get it that way. Similarly, with all the woods and parts that were there which are needed to make the new basses..It must all have cost a lot of money.. Having said that, Wal & Pete were never driven by the money when they started, so when Pete was forced to retire afew years ago, he would have been desperate to find the right person to take the brand forward. So on that basis alone, the fact the he chose to hand over to Paul says everything about Paul's credentials to me.. On all sorts of levels I'm really glad that Wal is back in business; the fact it's a great and unique British bass for one, for keeping Wal and Pete's legacy alive for another and also because Paul is one of the good guys IMHO.. Long may it continue!

 6.
Don't all rush at once.... http://www.walbasses.co.uk/ Phil
Great news!!!
 7. Very nice collection indeed!! As well as the other very nice collection you already had....
 8.
damn, looks like me and simon1964 wont be able to make it. we were supposed to be giving budgetbassist a lift, too, so provided he still wants to go i guess he'll be looking for a lift!
That's a shame!! Next time maybe...
 9.
+1 on that - probably the biggest single factor in your sound. The problem is there's not that much information available for actually comparing like for like - after all, how can you describe a subtle difference in a sound, let alone a feel? People get put off 'cos you're looking at anything from 25 to 50 quid for a set, allot to lay out if you end up not liking them. Maybe we should start a database with easy to use parameters describing brightness, depth, smoothness, tension etc. on a 1 to 10 scale or suchlike. At least it will give a starting point for anyone looking for a change.
Sounds like a plan....
 10. SE BASS BASH GARAGE SALE Several Basschatters have expressed an interest in bringing along stuff for sale or to trade. For example, Happy Jack will have an instrument or two and some PA gear which will be on offer on the day. SELLERS: It probably makes sense to have gear for sale in the quiet room (assuming it’s big enough) but there’s no way that Basschat can provide “security” for this stuff. If you have stuff for sale, but want to move around the Bass Bash rather than be tied to a table (!) then you should consider keeping your stuff locked in your vehicle and putting photo-adverts on a table to show what you brung. If you want to do this but won’t be coming by car, then it may be possible to have another Basschatter lock it in his car for you. Happy Jack should have some spare room during the Bass Bash because the drum kit will be in use. So, to get things moving, here's yet another SE Basschat List; this time of things to Buy, Sell & Trade! Please feel free to add to it: 01. Silverfoxnik: For sale and/or trade: GK 700RB head, Kay '80s thru neck bass (for sale/trade). Interested in: 5 string basses, preferably passive & through-neck.. 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15.
 11.
Thanks Nik I'm having trouble spotting a specific list about buying/selling, can you point it out to me ? Otherwise I'll just add notes to the big list (attendees+gear) Andy
Hi Andy You're absolutely right! Hang on.... Nik
 12. That's a very cool looking bass!
 13.
You = Me
Then all's right with the world this fine sunday afternoon....
 14.
i apologise for my close minded rant...its never a good idea to post anything after you have been out for the evening....i really like some of Fleas playing..my comments were a little immature..
No need to apologise at all.. Your rant has sparked of some posts that make for really interesting reading, so as far as I'm concerned, it's been quite productive! Back on topic, I agree with whoever said it needn't be mutually exclusive.. There's more than enough room for everyone and both Flea and VW have been hugely influential.. After all, how many of us can say that?
 15.
Never been to one of these before, but planning on this one, and bringing some of my gear. However I've got little idea of the format, other than the idea being to get an idea of other peoples gear. So can somebody fill me in ? Does everyone bring gear, or is there a strong contingent of lookers only ? Do you just set up in your own area and stay put, or do people move around a lot leaving their gear on display ? And are there opportunities for trading and buying/selling ? FWIW, I'm thinking of bring my Markbass combo (1x12) , together with Status Eclipse 5 Ltd (possible trader), Rob Allen Deep 5 (to show it off) and if there's anyones interested in seeing it, my BSX Allegro upright. If there no interest, I'll bring something else more easily transportable, Status S1 fretless 5 (unlined, a beauty and a keeper) Oh, and I'll update the list once I know more about the format and I've firmed up what I'm bringing. Andy
Hi Andy Great - it'll be good to see you there! The format is what you want it to be really; people bring their gear if they want to and if you do, find a space and set up (bring an extension lead btw). You can move around to see who else is there, look at a huge range of gear and also try out the Workshops, The Quiet Room and The Jamming Room. I have always left my gear on display at previous Bashes and moved around a lot, because that's what's good about everyone getting together IMO. And yes, there are opportunities for trading and buying & selling.. In fact, there's a post on this thread that I'm sure will fill up this week with lists of what people are bringing along for that very purpose.. I'm definitely interested in seeing your Rob Allen Deep 5 and I'm sure most of what you've mentioned above will be of interest to other Basschatters!! Hope that helps, Nik
 16. Great! How long till the JO5 arrives..?
 17. I'm definitely going.. Went last year and saw Herbies Flowers and it was fantastic! Franc O'Shea was good too...
 18.
yep, had to be locked inside a venue for our own safety as there was a riot going on outside. This was a venue outside of Milton Keynes a few years ago. Wolverton I think.
Sounds pretty scary!! We played at Horatio's Bar on Brighton Pier a couple of years ago and there's a karaoke bar next door which is known for being full of very tuneless people who's real talent is boozing.. Two very pissed guys came into the bar after their karaoke performance and started hassling us from the minute we started playing. They kept asking for particular songs, asking to have a go on the drums, the guitar, bass etc, etc.. As well as really winding us up, their constant interjections started to wind the rest of the audience up as well. Even though they tried to use our gear during the break without asking us, we somehow managed to get through to the last few songs without anything kicking off...Until one of the two guys picked up our guitarists spare guitar, fell backwards and banged into the amp!! Then all hell broke loose; our keyboard player & guitarist were fighting one of the two guys, members of the audience came up and started rucking with the other guy - it was mayhem! The keyboards went over, one side of the PA fell, a cigarette machine in the corner also went over... Funniest bit was when our guitarist's missus got involved.. In the end, three security blokes finally intervened and kicked the two tw*ts out and we resumed and somehow finished the gig, even playing an extra half-hour at the manager's request and for some extra cash! Looking back, it was something that could have been avoided if the security guys had got involved earlier.. Not surprisingly, we've not been back since!
 19.
Oh, I won't offer a free slap lesson then
Nor me!!
 20.
Happy to throw in an as-new bass tab book for RATM's first album and Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Both are mint condition. Edit: The Standing In ... has a small bend in front cover which is only noticed if you scrutinise. Its still a nice thing to have and has both CDs (unplayed) in the inside cover. Silverfoxnik, let me know if you only want completely mint things in raffle and I will withdraw this. The RATM is definitely as-new.
Hi Clarky, Thanks for the offer, that's great! No - IMO contributions for the Raffle don't have to be mint condition (though that helps), just something that will be of use and/or interest to fellow bassists and which will encourage them to buy tickets! Cheers Nik
 21.
No, far from it. In fact it often makes me wonder on here when folks are on about changing their 'sound' or 'tone', how much of it could be done by careful and strategically changing strings. Certainly in my limited experience you can make considerable and noticeable changes with very subtle changes here and there. I now only make one small change at a time and let it settle before moving to alter others......
Hi Bob, Amazingly, with your encouragement I have managed to solve it!! Thinking about what you'd said, I decided to set the bass up from scratch, checking each string's intonation and action as well as looking at the pick up height as well... And whilst doing that I noticed that the Gotoh bridge on the RBVs has an extra adjustment that you can make which allows you to tweak the string spacing. So I looked at each string and noticed that the B-string was out of line as it it crossed over the saddle and down into the hole that goes throgh the body of the bass! Which in effect meant it had quite a twist to it, causing it to sound quite vague and not intonate properly. Having straightened it up it now sounds really distinct and clear and is in tune right up the neck, so I'm really happy!! Thanks for the help... Nik

 24.
Nik, Yes it does make sense, and whilst it is only very slight and subtle differences, tensions may vary and this is why we have to set up (or at least check it ) whenever we change string makes or gauges.
Thanks; at least I'm not going mad then...
 25. Chris - it might be worth you posting this in the actual SE bash thread?
