I have recently dealt with Nik for his Kay bass. Sadly, despite good packing on his behalf, the couriers managed to damage it resulting in a hefty bill for its repair. Nik has been superb in arranging a claim under the insurance and although we're still awaiting the outcome, I can't fault him at all and am so glad I bought the bass from someone so honest, helpful and friendly! His communication throughout has also been excellent. Deffo recommended and a very positive experience, regardless of the heavy-handed fools responsible for the damage! Cheers, James
Thanks James! The feeling is mutual, as it's always a pleasure dealing with the brilliant people on here like your good self.. In stark contrast however, to the idiots in courier companies like Interparcel who for some reason can't understand when it says 'FRAGILE' on a parcel!
I managed to see the band, Mamas Gun playing in Bristol on Thursday night and it was the first time in ages that a band has had me hooked from the first bar. They also look great, which is all part of show biz, I know but they looked absolutely right for what they were playing. Check them out here if you haven't already. I couldn't believe these guys had stayed under my radar; it's melodic groove based soul/funk with vocals that are very reminiscent of The Stylistics, Marvin Gaye, The temps, The Four Tops etc. The bassist and drummer were fantastic and grooved as well as anyone I heard. The bassist is Rex Horan, I'd not heard of him before but chatting to him afterward he seems like a really great guy and is a self-confessed gear nut. He has a really ballsy sound and his style reminded me of Jerry Jemmott, Stuart Zender, George Porter Jnr and a few others. If you get the chance to see them, go; their stage show is fabulous and the moves will make you grin. I was feeling a bit grumpy and down in the dumps on Thursday but this lot turned me round and made it a great day in the end.
Both Rex & the drummer, Jack Pollitt played together some years ago with a female artist called Sam Obernik if I recall correctly.. And before that Jack played for a guy I used to manage back in the late 90's called Simon Warner who was signed to One Little Indian.. Rex & Jack are both great players and it's really nice to see what they're up to these days.. So thanks for posting it up here Sean - that's made my day!
I hope your all jealous!! lol
Great story and yes, very jealous! You are a lucky man on both counts.. I think we need a new 'unoffical' Basschat policy that barrs you from ever trying to sell or trade that bass here on BC.. It has to be a keeper for life!

Every now and again, something happens here on Basschat that I know will stick in my memory for a long time and this little story is one of them.. It's what makes the place so great IMO! So.. A couple of weeks ago I decided that I'd try and sell my USA Fender Jazz 5 Deluxe and noticed that Alan was looking for a 34" 5 string bass, so I sent him a PM to see if he might be interested. A couple of PMs later, we'd worked out that Alan was really interested in trying my Fender and I was really interested in trying Al's Sandberg JJ 5 (even though it is a 35" scale which I don't normally feel comfortable with) with a view to doing a trade. The only problem was, how to try the basses out, as I'm on the south coast near Brighton and Al is studying music and playing in a great band in Manchester (my hometown funnily enough). But a 600 mile round trip is no obstacle where Al is concerned as he's that dedicated to his bass playing and all that goes with it, so he decided to travel down last Saturday by train, leaving Manchester at 'stupid o'clock' in the morning, and he duly arrived in Littlehampton at about midday. Anyway, to cut what could be a very long story short, after about 4 hours of trying out the different basses, chatting about all sorts of music-related stuff and Al giving me a free bass theory lesson, we decided to trade the two basses... which is a decision I'm really happy about because I just love the sound of the Sandberg 5 and, now it's been set up to suit me, it's a great bass to play. Happily, the Fender 5 is working out great for Al as well...so all is good! To sum up; Al is a phenomenally good musician and a fantastically inventive bass player as well as being a really good person to meet and deal with.. So I wanted to post this feedback for him here to thank him for going to all that trouble & effort last week and also to recommend him highly to everyone else on Basschat! Cheers Al - hope 'it's all good'! Nik

Just sold an old Kay Bass to James and I have to say he's been brilliant to deal with! Especially as the bass arrived with damage to it, caused by some careless barstewards at Interparcel.. Given the situation, James has been very helpful in getting a claim together (supplying photos etc) and has also been very understanding & patient! All in all, dealing with excellent people here on Basschat like James makes even these situations worth it..so, I can't recommend James highly enough! Thanks again James Nik

I had one of these and used it very happily for a year or so before upgrading to an Eden Metro.. It's a brilliant introduction to the 'Eden sound' and has loads of great features as well. Oh; and it's quite powerful too which is always useful.. Good demo of it by Bill Clements on YouTube HERE! Good luck with the sale!
I had someone PM about this bass and why I sold it to Aussiephoenix, this is what I said...: Edit: don't get me wrong - it also sounds good in a "home" practice environment. However, it was awesome live. I'm sure whoever picks this up would be very happy with it. By the way the previous owner to me is also knocking around here somewhere. He used to go by the name of russofjamm back in the BassWorld days, and I think he's on BC now with a different name which I can't remember. So there you have it! p.s. I should add that my transaction with AP went very smoothly, and I personally wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again.
Wasn't russofjamm what mr.russ used to call himself?
I've had second thoughts about selling this and so have withdrawn it from sale. It was an attack of the madness last night. Thanks for the kind comments, you made me see sense. Perhaps I ought to think about using it a bit more instead.
Good plan Dave!!

Great looking set up, but must say that the Ken Smith is especially nice...

Hi Edmouk, Nice looking bass but I agree with you that it does look like it might be one of the Lowden-era Goodfellow basses from the 1990s. I remember back then buying one of the 5 string models for about £700 and it was a goo dbass but not really in the same class as one made by bernie himself. I'd say that a second hand Lowden-era one now would be worth between £500-700, but that's a total, total guess! Good luck with it, Nik
Each pickup has its own 3 band EQ - bit different eh?
Now that's just greedy!! Very nice bass by the way....

Looks like a fantastic day.. Some fabulous looking basses for us down here in the south to be envious of.. That Wood and Tronics 5 looks stunning...As do 4000's Seis and many others too. Most impresive of all though was that you guys managed to have some WAGS there!! How do you do that then?
Hello all Seriously thinking of selling my Sei Jazz 5, see link This is my backup bass, and is really too nice a bass to have sitting around doing next to nothing. I know it's coming up to Christmas so this might not shift, and being honest it won't bother me if it doesn't. Looking for offers around the £1600 mark !!! Cheers y'all Stephen
Gorgeous looking bass! Far too nice to be a back up...
Can't believe I haven't added mine to this thread.
Had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Jake's Alembic at the SE Bass Bash last month.. I think it's one of the most stunning instruments I've ever seen; almost like looking at the bass equivalent of a Rolls Royce or a Bentley! And the sound? Well, it was awesome (mind you Jake's playing was a huge part of that too)..

Very cool looking gear! I've never played a Jaguar but they look great...
I think that is one aspect of playing in a covers band that is so appealing. I listen to music that I wouldn't have ordinarily listened to until I am really familiar with it and get to appreciate it more. Well, except for Mustang Sally.
+1
