You need something flat to check across the frets. You can buy fret rockers but there are many objects that will do the job.

Plywood is not the worst material to make a bass from. Do you still have the original bridge?

It's taken a while to gather my thoughts after day 2 of Forwards festival. Scalping stepped up to the main stage after Viagra Boys had visa problems and were an excellent dance/metal crossover act. Amyl and the Sniffers were loud but left me feeling like their set was at least 10 minutes too long despite only playing for 40 minutes! Primal Scream did the same thing they've done since the 90s. I trekked across site to catch a bit of Leftfield who were cracking, but I had to leave them to it for the main event back at the West stage. Aphex Twin. Where to begin? Definitely not for everyone! At times it felt like I was being psychologically reprogrammed, it was incredibly trippy and literally mind blowing. The man is a one off - capable of beautiful haunting music one moment, proper screwface inducing bass grooves in another, and then becomes a military grade audio visual assault weapon. He played until they cut him off, we could have happily stayed with it for hours more. I danced, cried and shouted with joy but mostly just laughed hysterically at the sheer audacity of it all.

A great day at Forwards festival in Bristol yesterday - highlights for me were a set from Goldie plus band, Bonobo playing as the sun went down and then an absolute masterclass in headlining a show by Erykah Badu. Her band were super tight, she was a queen diva with no less a great than Lalah Hathaway on BVs to ice the cake a little more. I'm back there today, looking forward to it!

I'm browsing on my Android phone, Google browser with no adblockers. I've clicked 'got it' and now get no extra ads, just the little banner ad at the top (currently Rotosound new picks). For my configuration at least it appears to be working exactly as intended 👍

Oh I missed it! The last time I saw it was a special anniversary screening in Bristol Imax with an intro from Michael Palin (its his favourite film) plus a long and very funny intro from Harry Shearer, both recorded just for this showing. It was a fantastic night, a cinema full of laughter is a great experience.

My band is back to a 3-piece, our drummer couldn't commit the time (he has a young family, it's all amicable and doors are open) so we have decided to use backing tracks instead. We still play the same instrumental and vocal parts but with either programmed or recorded drums and crucially now all the extra parts that are in the studio versions. This has been a revelation, the added dimension of all the synth lines and extra orchestration make things sound amazing. We still have dynamic range it just sounds better!

I'll happily play a 5-string in C standard tuning. It's a good workout.

It's very difficult to avoid as they are a pull through design. I'm quite tempted to bust out the dremel and turn one into a top loader...

I find they do, when changing strings. I'm in the habit now of resetting them before I tune up for the first time.

Another early birthday session yesterday, this one was for both the singer/guitarists in the band who celebrated their 40th and 50th in the week. A tad bittersweet as our drummer has had to go on hiatus due to not having the time to commit. He has a young family so it's understandable, no bridges have been burned and the doors are all open. We're going to gig as a 3-piece but with backing tracks for now. We played an absolute blinder, people watched and were appreciative. The sound was good despite a cobbled together selection of kit which I managed to wrangle a decent noise out of! My bass decided to get a spangle on afterwards...
