  1. More photos as requested. Currently shod with new DR Lo-Riders.
  2. I’ve had this lovely 2020 Sire for a few months and was blown away by it when it arrived from Andertons. Having had US Deluxe Fenders in the past it measures up very well at a fraction of the price, and with a better B string, and better circuit. It’s the second edition, with some improvements including a better bridge and tweaked preamp. Ash and maple with a classic Jazz bass look - it says LPB on the site but it’s more like a lighter sparkle finish with matching headstock and blocks and binding. The paint finish is flawless, except for a touch of roughness inside the truss rod cavity. Playability is excellent and the tone is very flexible - 18V circuit, 3-band EQ with sweepable mids and active/passive operation. Weight is a reasonable 4.7Kg. As with all jazz basses there is a bit of neck dive when seated so this did have some Ultralites fitted, but has been returned to stock (you cannot see the small screw holes, 1 per tuner, as the traditional tuners cover them - think of it as pre-drilled!). No dents, dings or scratches anywhere. I’m selling for only one reason: I have another bass incoming and don’t have the space. No gigbag or case as it come from Sire so pickup only from near Woking. For £350 you simply cannot get anything else to touch it. Even at retail price IMHO there’s nothing below £1K that comes close Any questions, or if you want more pics, just send me a PM.
  3. It’s partly exchange rate and partly that the shipping has shot up since I started looking at the harvest orange StingRays. A few weeks ago UPS Express was about £85 - now it’s about £155. A reflection of the global turmoil in shipping and logistics, perhaps. To be honest I prefer the all black one to the matt grey, and anyway don’t play 4s. Those orange StingRays, though. A lot of money, but so tempting…
  4. I didn’t realised you’d sold it, I should have asked for 1st refusal Rootbeer finish is very nice. Great basses. The in-between positions are the coolest. I’d love one in ash and maple. Such good value for money used, too.
  5. I cannot agree with any of that. The problem with that song is that there are many different modulations, some are similar and some are different, and from a lot of experience playing easy to fiendishly difficult music, the songs that drift around like this are the easiest ones to get lost in. I think Rick is fantastic and has amazing and varied knowledge across a wide range of musical topics. Sure, he’s no expert keyboard player, drummer, or singer but nevertheless he has quite an ear, a wide musical palette and has clearly gone and done it over many years rather than just sitting on a forum criticising others output. He was also originally a bass player. If that’s what you class as a jack of all trades, then I’m quite happy with that level. I’ll be looking forward to your much better YT channel - coming soon, is it?
  6. It’s as it ever was. Aside from oddities (why anyone would pay £6K+ for a battered Wal that were nicely made but hardly boutique in their time is beyond me) 4-string Fenders generally sell, anything with a smaller market tends to stagnate. It’s probably more noticeable at the moment because people are in general being a bit more cautious, which means a lot more basses for sale and fewer buyers.
  7. I like it. It’s something a bit different and both colour combinations look good. I don’t play a 4 but I’d be (maybe casually) interested if they make a 5.
  8. I’ve closed my account. I’ve bought very little from them in the last couple of years and only sold one item in the last 5 years or so, as dealing with the tyre kickers and time wasters finally lost its sparkle.
  9. Like others, I can’t see a blemish, just some shading. If the bass is a good one, keep it - otherwise it’ll be a 50/50 as to whether the replacement is great or a dog!
  10. How has this not sold? If I didn’t have one already it would be. Seriously - there’s nothing out there sub £1,000 to touch it if you want a Jazz IMHO, and even compared to a US Deluxe Jazz 5 I’d have the Sire (better B string, better circuit, neck more stable, feel and sound every bit as good). GLWTS
  11. And that’s the basic lack of parity with business vs private seller. BD can send a £2K+ bass out via DX Direct for £10, whereas as a private individual using a decent known courier it’s more like £40. But then it’s a volume business and a volume contract. The problem with the courier industry is that it’s long been a race to the bottom - there are many competing businesses and margins are tight I’ve had chats with our local UPS delivery drivers and their job conditions and pressure to complete a route on time are ridiculous. Added to the crap salary it’s no surprise if it attracts the kind of people who may “walk off” with valuable goods. No wonder Amazon ended up creating their own shipping dept and warehouses… The tradesman point is well made, however personally I’ve had no end of grief with builders etc. coming to do work, not showing up, then turning up unannounced, doing a poor job and vanishing without accepting responsibility. As many are sole traders or small businesses and very busy with lots of paid work they never answer the phone or reply to voicemails or emails. So not so dissimilar to couriers trying to wriggle out of a payout!
  12. The point was it’s apparently a scam for insurers to charge extra if the goods are worth more. It’s not. Now, whether they actually pay out or not… that’s an entirely different ball game, but couriers are not alone in trying to wriggle out of a claim; most types of insurance are exactly the same because the entire business model is founded on not paying out - any business insuring something worth £1200 for effectively £5 wouldn’t last long if they had to pay out on even a tiny percentage of shipments.
  13. If a courier carries a box with contents that weigh 5Kg, and are worth £10, should it cost the same as another box of the same size, weighting the same, that is valued at £10,000? It’s the same volumetric weight from the courier, but the payout in case of damage or loss is 100 times more. This is why couriers add enhanced cover. If they didn’t then they’d just charge based on declared value anyway as the risk to them is still 100 times higher. This is how risk and the entire insurance industry works. Couriers to not take parcels into their “care”, they move it from one place to another at the lowest possible cost. I recently paid UPS £34 to move a £1200 bass for me - and that’s including full insurance cover at a £5 premium. Hardly a shady deal, is it?
  14. No offers as per the ad, thanks.
  15. That was me, like a tramp on chips It’s the first one I’ve seen for sale for a couple of years. I had a play last night and it’s incredibly versatile. I can hear jazz, precision, mudbucker and more tones, plus some that I can’t quite place. If you ever see one and can get past the Jetsons look, it may be the only bass you need!
  16. Doug did - check out “Wild” towards the end of the first album. Fantastic bass playing. Not sure about Guy. The second album with Kiss From A Rose says Pino Palladino and Laurence Cottle on bass. However I remember reading that Trevor Horn and Seal were unhappy with the overall result of many of the recorded parts, so loaded them all into samplers and re-did the lot. Possibly only this track survived as the drums and bass “sound” played. I thought the first album was raw and fantastic and had a great sense of machine-type grooves but with a real player feel. The second album is very lush and beautifully engineered but a touch soulless for me.
  17. The ultimate step would be prepaid Duty and VAT into the UK via a UK arm, and allowing returns to a UK drop-off, so the customer doesn’t have to manage the hassle of trying to engage with a courier and the HMRC to reclaim duty and VAT. The main issue currently is that the buyer becomes the importer, which isn’t a great experience. Only Thomann knows whether it’s economically worthwhile to do so, but given that they have a UK bank account for bank transfer payments and are planning the above, it would be ideal as they’re so much larger than any UK retailers and therefore have access to stock that’s hard to come by in the UK - and more often than not a but cheaper on the pricey stuff. As I’ve mentioned before, until returns are viable their guarantee on higher value items is worth nothing to me.
  18. I had two sets of black label 5-string stainless off of them with exactly the same result. Same response from them. I didn’t bother. They went in the bin and I don’t buy them anymore. Slinkies are the same price, sound less tinny (probably because they’re nickel-played) and I’ve bought probably over 100 sets over the last few years. Not once have I ever had a dud string.
  19. Lovely bass. Before Brexit I would have been all over this. Such a shame...
  20. No, I believe it’s a keyboard bass in the verses doubled, and it’s a fretted bass as you can hear the fret buzz when he picks harder in the “aaah” crescendos. Carmine is a much under-regarded bass player. His work on Let’s Dance was fantastic. His credit list has a lot more on it than I’d have thought as he’s not one of those “names” that immediately springs to mind. I’d like to have a black ESP (I think) PJ with gold hardware like he played on the serious moonlight tour
  21. I don’t suppose your third finger fretting the note before (9th fret on A) is not lifting clear of the board in time and causing the G to buzz? It’s common if you don’t fret notes with a curve to the fingers in the fretting hand
  22. Yeah, maybe it was a dud. I wouldn’t be the first to get a MM bass from Thomann with issues (not necessarily their fault). It was beautifully made. I have an inkling that it could be the neo humbuckers and perhaps the 18v circuit as I played a Bongo a while back and didn’t really like it that much, whereas older Stingrays are fine, as is the Sterling.
  23. Hmm. Interesting. I bought a 5HH from Thomann before Christmas and although it sounded great acoustically, plugged in I really didn’t like it. I’d had Stingrays and Sterlings before but every setting and sound just felt like there were no mids, and little definition. I put new Slinkies on and changed batteries, checked there were no wiring issues etc but it had to go back. I’ve since bought a 5HH Sterling (US model), which sounds great. I can only assume that either my amp didn’t like the Stingray pickups and EQ or it’s just not to my taste. Back it went (just in time too - arrived in Germany on 31 December!) Well done with the choice and glad you like it - nice colour combo.
