  1. Probably the same for me, it’s very much a personal indulgence, without any thought of gigging with it. Today’s task, along with action adjustment, will be to work out an initial height and angle for playing comfort.
  2. I was looking of photos from our last Jersey visit and wondering when we might return. That was autumn 2020, so a try out might not have been appropriate given the Covid restrictions back then, but I appreciate the belated offer.
  3. I can make the stretches too, but I do it for muting purposes. My teacher, when I started playing bass, was very hot on muting.
  4. Santa has come early to Ez Towers. I’ve wanted a DB for absolutely ages, but none ever came up for sale that suited. Then I moved 500+ miles north and suddenly a good number of proper uprights and EUBs appeared back down south where I could’ve gone and tried/collected. Harrumph! 😤 I decided that an EUB would be the most sensible way forward, but didn’t want to spend a fortune. I saw a Stagg EUB 2nd hand at a well known bass purveyor, phoned up but sold. However, “We have KK Baby Bass,” they said. Hmm, 3 times more than the Stagg, thought required. Thought about it for a day or 2 and then phoned up to buy it; sold! Then, a few days later, they had a 2nd hand NS WAV advertised on FB, phoned the next morning; sold again! I could’ve gone down the Harley Benton route, but opinions varied and the strings would have to be replaced to get closer to that DB sound in my head. That was it, for the extra few quid (still way more than I started off wanting to spend) than 2nd hand or a lesser instrument, I decided to buy new from the distributor. Phoned up, “We’ve just had an NS delivery,” they say and I wait for the negative report about that delivery. But no, they have the very one I want (NS WAV 4 in honeyburst). Trigger pulled straight away (I didn’t want to be stung for a 4th time). UPS delivery info received, scheduled for tomorrow, but no, it arrived at 5:30 today! Happy days. Needs a bit adjustment action wise (for me anyway) but I’ll leave that for tomorrow once it’s warmed up properly (poor thing has been in vans and warehouses since it arrived down south only to go through it all again to get to me). However, had to test it just to make sure it was working and as I use Phil Jones gear, it should be just the ticket and it is. Sounds properly fine straight into the amp, but put it through my Sadowsky preamp pedal and it sounds even better (I understand the more expensive NS EUBs have active circuitry, but are really way above my budget, so the addition of a preamp makes sense). Now to learn to play the bugger! Ooh, I almost forgot. Thanks and blame must go to the folk who unknowingly influenced me in the final hurdle of this venture, namely, our own @NancyJohnson, David Swift and Tony Levin. And props to Barry at The Bass Centre for making it happen so quickly and easily.
  5. Pickup cover or strategically placed thumb rest for E string and higher (I play 4 stringers), resting on the E string when playing A string and higher and, finally, resting on the A string when play the D and G strings. I’m not sure whether this counts as floating thumb or not.
  6. Thorsday Child - Bowie
  7. Thunder & Lightning - Lizzy
  8. Don’t Look Back In Anger - Oasis
  9. National Express - The Divine Comedy
  10. Pictures of Lilly - The Who
  11. My two worst neck diving basses were both 34" scale P Basses. Both wonderfully lightweight, but there was a price to pay for that.
  12. When I play my 33” and 35” basses, I don’t suffer much from misalignment after extensive 30” shenanigans, even on the fretless ones. However, I’m about to find out what it feels like to go up to 42” (or thereabouts) from those various scales and I’m hoping that the totally different ergonomics will make it like a new instrument rather than just a different scale, which, with such a big jump, could definitely cause some issues. 😬
  13. Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
  14. I’m 6’ and prefer short scales these days, so I don’t see it being a problem. Shorties like the Mustang and Fallout have elongated bodies so don’t feel as small if you want a compromise.
  15. TLDR
  16. My 2 Maruszczyk custom builds barely get played at all these days and my Rob Allen only a bit more. I’m also currently looking at an EUB and, if I acquire one of those and get on with it, the aforementioned 3 may well find themselves on the way out. If that occurs, it means I’ll be playing 30” or 42” scale. Plenty of crossover there, not!
  17. Leave It - Yes
  18. Likewise. My Mustang is enjoying a resurgence in my affections in the last couple of days. I note that shorties are getting a good bit of TV time nowadays, the JMJ Mustang especially (one of the sisters in First Aid Kit uses one and the bass player in Wet Leg used one up until recently too, for instance. Both very much current ‘flavours of the month’).
  19. Mmm, Doobie Bros. Think I’ll dig out What Were Vices Are Now Habits.
  20. This certainly seems to be the case and the first few bars in the OP definitely had me thinking, “I’ve heard this before,” so I certainly see Dad’s point. What goes around, comes around, especially in popular music. Back to ‘70s funk - yes please.
  21. Rooster - Alice In Chains
  22. I do hope that’s tone metal.* *In answer to the other obvious question… you’d think so.
  23. Let It Roll - Little Feat
  24. Livewire - AC/DC
