  1. I've had acouple Strats but never bonded with them. Now own 2 Tele's, a vintage '77 and a MIM that I customized. Great gigging instruments that have stood the test of time. Like a Zippo lighter or a 1911 pistol, a perfect design of form following function.
  2. At one time, only royalty could wear purple. This bass is like the Queen Mum!
  3. I'm just curious why a thread would be locked within 24 hours of starting. Someone said something in the heat of the moment. Haven't we all. Maybe when he cooled down he would have apologized. It was more snitty than ugly. I'm not trying to tell the mods how to do their job, but it struck me as premature. I hate seeing things end this way. The guy's had some good posts here and I think he misconstrued.
  4. With all the great music that has been created with a 4 string, I've never felt the desire for anything more.
  5. I play fretless exclusively. Sold my fretted 10 years ago. Fretless is so much more expressive. Fretted now feels clunky to me and roundwounds make my fingers sore.
  6. To quote Bob Seegar; "All Chuck's children are out there playin' his licks" He left is mark on all of us. Yes, RIP brother.
  7. I love violin basses. The look, the sound, the weight, the scale. I play a Douglas, Chinese made, unlined fretless as my main bass. No bass more iconic. Everyone should own one.
  8. Jerry Lee Freakin' Lewis - Piano and Vocals Keith Richards - Guitar John Bonham - Drums John Paul Jones- Bass Good food, great stories, music by masters
  9. I had my Jazz shimmed by my local luthier. I just told him that I wanted one of wood, full pocket. He made the shim.
  10. Watch the movie "The Commitments". Roide Sully Roide.
  11. They shoulda gone after Hofner for copying their first bass, the violin shaped EB.
  12. Ask a 14 y/o to show you pictures of the bands they like. They will hanker after the basses those bass players are playing.
  13. Don't play it "square" like modern rock. It needs to swing with some great walking bass lines. Great energy music.
  14. I saw this in a catalog. So what, it's four string fretted with E, A, D fretless? I think a double neck would be less clumsy. Seems like a novelty. Wonder how wide that neck is? Make a great boat anchor.
  15. I'm 3. I work on improving my bass playing in general, and also regularly run through my set list for the band, looking for places where I could fing something that improves the song.
  16. Yeah, I too, was a singer before I started playing drums at age 10. Learned to sing while playing drums, then took up guitar and bass. Get your part down on bass, so you don't have to think about it, then you can put your brain onto learning the singing while your bass is on auto pilot. Start with songs where notes on both are right on the beat. Lator tackle ones where the singing or bass is syncopated. Hardest one for me was playing the synth bass part on bass to "Very Superstitious" while singing. Even Sting had trouble and had to work at getting his parts right live. Sing every day. Sing while driving. Memorize the lyrics so you don't have to think about them.
  17. I play bass and guitar in two different projects. I've never liked switching during gigs. I like bringing a specific rig for one, where I'll get the desired tone. Switching instruments onto someone elses rig, or carrying two rigs is always less than pleasant.
  18. Growing up in the 60's and 70's, I like happy music and powerful music. Even the attitude in blues is powerful instead of depressing. Never got the angst-ridden singers and songs. I'd rather hear the anger of the punks. Like drunks in a pub, it's easier to take the happy or beligerant one over the one crying in his beer.
  19. Some males, when meeting other males, need to show who is the pack leader. You can snarl and challenge, roll over and show your belly or sidestep. Tell him you've ordered a new one and it's in the mail (which never arrives) or use humor. Tell him his bird likes your deep throbbing bass just like it is.
  20. I don't really have a #1, but always enjoyed hearing Steve Stills bass playing. Noone ever mentions him, but his bass playing was great on early CSN.
  21. Saw the Faces live in '73 and '75, if I recall correctly. Always wondered who the Asian bass player was bouncing all over the stage in the latter. Ronnie Wood who wasn't a bad bass payer himself, probably played his best guitar in the Faces. Always loved the look of his Zemaitis.
  22. I've taken two in separate cases which I rebelled against as I never used the spare, so it sat side of stage or left in the car. Then I only took one, but felt guilty in case something went wrong. Got a double case for Christmas. Now spares right on stage if needed, with no carting extra piece and no guilt......But still play the gig with one.
