1. Just the one usually. P-Bass with flats for R&B,soul,disco,60's etc gigs & a P-Bass with rounds for 80's,indie,rock gigs. If it's a wedding might take a back-up, though I've never had to needed to. Manage to get get enough variations in tone for what I do from one bass & my fingers or a pick.
2. Latest stuff from Killing Joke
3. I like his playing. Don't think he's the greatest technical bass player & not a massive fan of the Beatles either, but played enough of his basslines now in various cover bands to appreciate what he came up with, was right for the song. Plenty of good memorable hooks too.
4.
Fairly sure at this point that this guy is posting these threads and not reading them. Still not figured what he is hoping to achieve. They are quite bizarre.
Spotted this post as I've got a soapbar with tri-sound switch on my old Ibanez, was interested to hear some points of view etc... I think a forum can be sometimes be like a pub..... you do get all sorts, a wide variety of clientele I guess.
5. Played Portishead Working Mens Club last night with a 60's Beat music/Motown covers band I joined a week ago. sh*t hot jazz drummer held it down well, grooved everything along - joy to play with. Good gig, nice appreciative audience - enjoyed it.
6.
Hi There, I'd look out for a Japanese bass. There are often lots of used models around the £300 mark. You can pick up an old Ibanez bass such as a "blazer" or "roadstar" or loads of other manufacturers did P-bass clones. Check out the JapCrap thread in the Ebay section on basschat. I bought an early 80's Japanese Tokai in (yellowed) olympic white, best £220 I've ever spent, is now my main bass. There is lots of Japanese stuff out there, search on here or "MIJ" ,"CIJ" or "Japanese bass" on ebay. You can't go far wrong, there are several JapCap resident experts on basschat, who can advise better than me. Do you really want a brand new bass? Don't think I'd ever buy a new instrument ever again (unless some treated me!) I have not experience of VM squires, though I do love the fiesta red one. Cheers Neil
+1 to the above. For £300 or less, you can pick-up a quality MIJ bass, if you look around. If you can find an old Tokai that's good & reasonably priced, bag it, same for an Ibanez Blazer. Will also at least keep it's value should you choose to move it on in the future. TBH think you'll get a better deal off here than off ebay. Once you find a bass with 'MIJ', 'Japan' etc... in the listing on ebay the bidding generally starts going up. Recently got a nice '91 MIJ Squier off here at a bargain price.

PEDAL MODS.

I modded a CS-3 as per the one on the Ovnilab site, which I also understand to be pretty much the 'Humphrey' mod. Transformed it into a cracking bass compressor!
8. Though Jamerson is synonymous with Motown bass; Bob Babbitt, Tony Newton, Wilton Felder etc... are also worth checking out.
9. Bought a lovely MIJ Squier P-Bass off Russ. Good communications & no messing about - straight forward deal. Thoroughly recommended. Cheers
10. Hi, Here's my old V-Type. Just replaced the JJ Tesla's I previously put in it, with a pair of Harma (cryo) Telefunken ECC803S clones - lovely warm tone, but still punchy. The matching 4x12 has a monster sound, fills the room, but weighs a ton! For smaller gigs I use a Kappalite loaded 1x15 '1153' cab.
11. I got round this problem on a 70's Maya Rickenfaker I once had, by just adding a couple of small but deep plastic washers on the screws.
12. Sold my EHX Octave Multiplexer to Rick. Good guy to deal with, fast payment, no messing around. Recommended.
13. Hi Christian. Cheers
14. Good work - thanks
15.
VERY reassuring. Is it worth keeping spares, or are they the kind of thing that start to age as soon as they leave the factory and I'd be better off buying them as-and-when?
Definitely good idea to have spares. I whipped out the crappy Chinese ones that came with my Trace V-Type & replaced them with something better. Keep them as spares in my gig bag, in case the nice Harma ones ever go. Worth treating yourself to a good preamp valve, it will make improve the tone. Many to choose from... all different flavours
16.
As the title. Free to anyone who'll cover postage, or pick up from Milton Keynes.
PM'd
17. If still for sale. I'll take it. PM'd. Cheers
18. Bumped with reduced price - bargain!
19. Frank Aust (Bristol) 0117 960 3589 He keeps Hugh Cornwell & Gypie Mayo's (along with many others) stuff working, & makes a good cup of tea for while you wait - that's good enough for me.

Umcoo Feedback

Chris bought my lovely Ibanez Blazer. Quick payment, good coms - no messing around. Hope you're still liking it Chris & putting it to good use! Cheers Nick
21. Bought Theo's Boom Stick Bottom Feeder. Promptly delivered. Good guy to deal with, no messing about. Cheers
22.
As far as I'm aware, Bernard Edwards rarely changed his strings on both his Precision and Stingrays but all of which were strung with roundwound strings, never flats. P-bass/old roundwounds = Good Times tone... not a Stingray as commonly believed!
I recall reading that he used a Tokai on a lot of recordings.
.....I think the first thing I am going to do is try some flats on my backup bass. The songs might not have been played on flats but I have never tried them before so as Beedster said I feel I owe it to myself to try some. If it does go some way to re-creating the sound then that is a bonus.
OldGit's post above mentions D'addario Chromes; I find they get a good tone for this type of music also. Not as thumpy & more pronounced mids (to my ears) than La Bellas - almost like an old set of round wounds with a bit of punch. Take ages to play in though!
23. At the moment, dug out 'How to Operate with a Blown Mind' by Lo Fidelity Allstars....
24. My 80's Tokai Hardpuncher has got quite a slim fast neck. Though not jazz-like, it is totally opposite to my '62 RI, which makes me work a bit more, but I do like both. Another option could be an Ibanez Blazer; slimmer, faster & less chunky neck (IMO) than the usual P-Bass.
25. Can totally identify with this predicament, which is why I've managed to get my collection down from twelve to four basses over the last six months. The aim at the moment is to get eventually down to just two P-Basses ('62 RI & tokai) - one with flats & one with rounds. Keeping my Ibanez Roadstar for sentimental reasons. Must be an opposite to GAS(?) Realised that's all I need, & had enough of wasting time prior to gigs trying to decide which bass to take.... bit like my Mrs. spending ages deciding on what pair of shoes to wear on a night out.
