Help needed: The Night - Frankie Valli and the Four Season
nick replied to chuck_stones's topic in General Discussion
Ah, the song that got me into playing bass, I even started a thread about that very thing about two years ago. We've played it, but it's hard. I think it's one of those songs that needs two things, a focus on getting the feel of the bass part as opposed to getting it note perfect, and a bloody tight band. It's a song that's driven by the bass part so you have be prepared to lead from the front. I'll have a good listen to it tomorrow and get back to you with anything I can remember C
Its a classic - love this song. Beedster's comments above are bang-on; you just gotta go for it & let rip each time that part kicks in. -
Hi All, Thought I'd post a bit on an SFT clone I've been building for Bassbod This is the third one I've built so far, previous two I did on veroboard, but thought I'd try a ready made PCB from Madbean Got the already painted box from Banzai (Duncan wanted purple ). Drilled holes etc... just waiting the knobs to arrive. Wired up the switch, jacksockets & pots. As opposed to the schematic, went for a reverse 1m log for gain & 100k linear for volume, as with previous builds all the warmth & grindy action was bunched up at the top end of the pots travel. The build worked great first time no issue. However, as per many recommendations on Freestompboxes & Madbean, this thing opens up with more headroom when powered by 18 volts. So I'm going to add this little voltage doubler inside. Next steps; wiring up the voltage doubler, tidy up wires with some wraps, fit knobs, battery compartment... To be continued.

South West Bassists Might Want To Check This Out
Go on......spill the beans
Would be unprofessional of me to comment publicly on the way other bands go about their business, even if it is "the finest 60's & Motown showband in the country". Lets just say, I found it an 'interesting' experience. Hi Liam, if you're interested go for it mate, give 'em a try - the do seem to be getting the gigs. If you still want to know why I jettisoned, PM me. -
Can I post the first gripe with these..... Changed the strings on my White one for some Rotosound Black Nylons. Looks and sounds fantastic, but the Ball Ends are too small to fit into the things on the back of the body, so they all are sticking out What a shame, but I still think it's a great Bass.
I strung mine with black nylons, just went the usual back of bridge route, though not too bothered about string through body - sustain's not a priority for me.
-
Set mine up on Friday, when I got it. It did come with a high action for me, & I have my basses probably higher than average. Few turns on the truss rod & a fair bit of bridge adjustment got action down to somewhat lower than what I normally have - medium/low - Its still holding that, no issues. If its defective, & the neck is goosed; I would personally send it back, regardless of the cost. *Yeah, mine came tuned to G also?!

Imaginary Jam Session: Which Drummers Would You Like To Play With?

Stephen Morris, or going musically in the other direction Carmine Appice -
Surprised nobody's started one of these yet! Suspect most people have gone for the sonic blue one, but interested to see what the other colours look like in the flesh. Here's mine
That's something I've never understood. In nearly every case I've seen, the volume pot is just the wrong value on budget range basses and swapping it fixes the problem. Daft thing is that it doesn't cost any more to use the right value pot than it does to use the wrong value pot - unless there's a factory turning these out that accidentally ordered a million pots instead of a thousand... .
+1 Just had the scratchplate off mine, I wanted to wire in a PIO cap on the tone pot.... I am going to change the pots first, they're those crappy little ones you sometimes get on early Japcrap. No point in going overboard with putting CTS pots in, but a couple of Alphas will be a vast improvement. The other thing is, out of curiousity I put an old black scratchplate from a Tokai up to it, to see if it would fit. From what I can see, it wouldn't be a major modification to fit a P-Bass scratchplate - just a bit of trimming around the neck area.

Just got mine. Apparently it had been languishing in a neighbour's shed for most of the day ...... Unwrapped it, given it a quick going over. Obviously needs a set-up & a decent set of strings, but it really is not a bad bass - quite pleasantly surprised. I like the neck profile, whilst not being quite as deep as I like, it's not too shallow (for me) like a lot of modern basses. The nut on mine seems to be cut bang-on, which is unusual on budget basses. Frets are big & chunky, can't see a need as yet for them to be dressed etc on mine... pretty good. The pickup isn't bad sounding, got bit of bark to it. Its not that high output @ 8.4k, but (to my ears it) seems to have quite a nice tone - so it'll stay. All the other hardware; bridge, tuners, pots are more than adequate - no worse than a Squier. Think the only thing I'll look at on it (apart from usual set-up) is the tone pot. It doesn't do a lot at present, will also put a PIO cap in there. I quite like the quirky headstock & the monogramed pickguard looks cool with sonic blue IMO - it's 'low budget kitsch' Gonna put some black nylons on it & gig it next weekend. Well worth the money.

I got the sonic blue one too on Wednesday, just waiting for it now. Some black nylons will go nicely on it.

*SOLD* Got these pickups (NOS for Ibanez Artcore Bass) off ebay with intention of fitting them to my Epiphone Flying V bass. However, I've actually found the stock pickups in the Epiphone to be alright IMO, & also can't be arsed to change them, so selling these. They're in new unused condition, still with cellophane wrapping on the gold covers. Look very nice & are fairly decent sounding. Dimensions: 85mm x 35mm x 20mm Neck Pickup = 9.54k, Bridge Pickup = 9.67k £20 inc. P&P for both (neck & bridge) Please PM me if interested, offers etc. Thanks
Why was it bad? In my experience its better!
Made the mistake of taking along quite a heavy Japcrap Kimara jazz copy to play. By the end, I felt & was walking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. That will teach me!

Usually 2x45 for pubs, 3x45 weddings, functions or social clubs, also depends on the band/music etc... At a 50th birthday dep gig I played last year, the band played for nearly 2 1/2 hours (non-stop) - not good
I remember seeing a close up picture on Wikipedia of him from the "Diamond Hoo Ha" tour with that bass, and it had the EXACT same "Spirit by Steinberger" logo on it as mine. Apologies for being pedantic. The Hohner and Spirit basses are probably the same basses but with different logos. Besides, seeing as you have one, you'll know they sound great anyway! :-)
I think it was a Steinberger too. Recall when it came up on ebay, watched the auction.

If he was still alive, John McGeoch... or Geordie Walker. If they weren't available, I'd settle for Tom Verlaine.

Bought an old Antoria fretless P-Bass from Liam this morning. Top fella, fair price - good to deal with. Thanks

Sorry, I realise he's your friend, but what an absolute arsehole.
Took the words right out of my mouth. Your friend sounds like a real numpty. Hope you get it back OK.

Hello & welcome, There's quite a few Bristol based folk on here. Cheers

I think its homemade too. However, sometime ago I saw a bass very similar to this, (again I think possibly homemade) hanging in a local bric-a-brac shop, had a set neck, stripped bare wood, similar pickup, can't remeber fret markers, but think I recall different control layout. It's probabably still there, will have a pop-in & look next time I pass the shop.
