1. Those Vox Standards are very heavy - a real man's bass. They're made of maple blockboard with maple front and back facings. And covered in the most amazingly thick tough stuff to remove. I defretted mine too, and swapped it for a pair of AR18s speakers.
2. Hey! a little metal insert on the headstock would facilitate a useful emergency bottle-opener. I quite like the headstock design - it will be nice to see it realized.
3. I'm sure they're lovely to play, but I still think they look RONGO!
4. I've said it before, but BobP (0riginal owner) has exquisite taste in basses, and this is no exception. I'm pretty sure I had a brief dabble on this when I picked up my Sei from him. Nice. Good luck with the sale. Jules
5. Line6 Lowdown 110. I've used it for exactly the gigs you describe and it does very well. Has a good DI with speaker sim too.
6. I gave mine a good service before I sold it, and in trying everything out, found the line out and infact the whole preamp stage was very low noise. They use a decent toroidal transformer. This was the 4x10, and it did struggle at the highest volume settings in a 6 piece band, but was just about loud enough. The tone at lower volumes was punchy rather than deep. I think I sold mine for £75 ish. Theres a couple of things to look out for in the power stage. You can pm me for the details as I wouldn't want to bore this board (unless y'all WANT me to..), but they're no big deal and easily sorted. If it's cheap I'd really recommend it. Cheers Jules
7.
I use the black plastic Dunlop washers. They never fail, unlike various makes of 'proper' straplocks.
+1 to those. Simple and inexpensive. And they keep your instrument fully original, if that sort of thing matters to you. I don't like the way Dunlops and Schallers resonate when playing seated with no tension on the strap. That tells me neither are quite engineered correctly. IMHO, of course.
8. check this out - listed as J Slater looks a LOT like Shuker to me! if it is this could be a brilliant bargain for one of you lefties out there even without the amp etc. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hand-Made-Electric-G...id=p3913.c0.m22 Please ignore me if I'm wrong, but send me a thank-you if you do score a bargain. (I love Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc btw.!!) Cheers Jules
9. Vigiers don't look like a Warwick Thumb though.
10. I asked my good friend Phil about this as I remembered he had one. Here is his reply: I only ever used the SR16 as a midi sound module, not as a sequencer. However, against my better judgement I dug out my sr16 and investigated this… In Song Compose mode, if you press play, it keeps duplicating the current pattern, so starting with an empty song, you can: select pattern 1a, play, stop in step 4, move to step 5 select pattern 1b play stop in step 14 There you have the desired 14 bar song. I suspect Geek99 is probably correct about the other limitations. - Phil. It's all greek (99!) to me, but I hope it helps. Cheers Jules
11. I'd do it for nowt. Didcot, Oxfordshire
12. "bobpalt" on here has had a lot done. Try PMing him for an in-depth rundown, he's very helpful. Say hi from Jules!
13. Do your belt up round the side. There's no rule to say you have to do them up round the front (unless the Belt Police are watching you.....)

15. Electrolube is a good brand
16. Out of interest, why Danish oil for the neck and Tru-Oil for the rest of the bass? Nice to see 1 solid bit of ash too.
17. These are awesome! If you are considering a Stingray, check these out. I think they're better for less money.
18. Passive: refinished in Tru-Oil, still has a few knocks and stains that just would not sand out. It it was in a terrible state when I got it as a doer-upper but has come up quite nice, it is not immaculate, but plays just fine. Has a 3way switch added and the socket relocated to the front from the side. Collection Oxfordshire area or meet up nearby. Anyone interested? As it says above, the Custom one has gone, defretted passive still for sale £140 Collected Cheers Jules Passive:
19. Another +1 for the lowdown110 studio. I've used it on acoustic gigs and has a good DI for recording with speaker sim. Roland bass cube 30 is good too. Plenty of sound for indoors. BTW what ARE thos Crate amps? not seen them before.
20. If all the speakers are individually 8ohms, wire 2 in parallel to each socket giving 4 ohms available at each socket. Make sure the sockets are not connected to each other at all, and make sure the + on each speaker is connected to + from the amp (make sure all the speakers operate in phase) Simples!
21.
Thanks Alex (again!). Geoff
Is there a thread anywhere explaining the meaning of the abbreviations quoted in speaker spec. sheets? This would make a useful pinned topic if there isn't one already...
