1. Sure enough, he knows someone who takes nice snaps!
2. Another fun thing to do is to turn the neck tone right down with the bridge tone full on and use the switch as a kind of wah effect. As previously mentioned though, setting a rhythm and lead sound on a non-master volume valve amp, it's totally the way to go. I'd have the amp (WEM Dominator) on 8, neck pickup on 3ish for rhythm and bridge on 10. No pedals or boxes. Lush.
3. sounds like Piano String Design strings. (Rotosound?) I used to use them quite lot. They have a nice boing to them and are meant to have better sustain too. You do set the saddles higher with this type. If you go back to conventional strings you'd want to drop the saddles a tad. I had heard the intonation may change a bit for the same gauge too, so that might need a tweak too.
4. Lovely playing, but I'm a bit surprised nobody mentioned the Arrowhead clip sounded rather like early Pat Metheny (without keys)
5. Thanks for clearing that up Luke. It's MoonBassAlpha btw
6. CMI used to do a well thought of Les Paul -a- like. Better than a lot of the proper cr@p of the day.
7. Kent Armstrong Tone Choke. It's fitted as part of U.S. Masters Multi Voice Passive circuit option: http://www.usmasters.com/basselectronicswht.htm It quite different and a bit subtle, but I noticed the difference a lot more when I added a tweeter box to my Barefaced Compact cab. I quite like it.
8.
Whilst I don't have a Thumpinator, the Genz Benz amps have a similar system built in (one of the things I checked with Mr Benz before I bought as I was considering a Thumpinator at the time). We tune down a semitone and it has no noticable effect on the sound, just a solid low B/Bb. As I understand it what both do is filter the ultra low harmonics that you cannot hear anyway, but that lead to big speaker excursions expending a lot of energy to no audible effect.
Do all Genz have an hpf? (wondering about my Shuttle 3.0). Would certainly make sense for the lower powered amps. cheers Jules
9. Thanks Musky. I wish I had re checked wembley speakers website before I bought the new one. The 4ohm original would have potentially been louder, though I guess Wembley would have charged double the cost of the new one (£23 odd incl.)
10. You can buy felt stick-on discs for furniture used on wood/laminate floors. I would think they would be quite good. Cheap too!
11. Aren't the laminations in the transformers traditionally mounted at 90 degrees to each other? I'm sure I've seen it/read it somewhere. I think it's meant to cut down mutually induced hum. Or something. I may have just dreamt it though...
12. So, Plan B failed too, so I bit the bullet and bought a Celestion 5" speaker, in 8 Ohms, the Truvox TF0510. Shame the mounting centres are larger (why would they do that? -moral- never assume!) out with the file. It does sound nice now though. I did try bass through it, and it sounded terrible. There were a couple of screws missing and the box isn't exactly airtight, so it chuffs like a goodn. I filled the screw holes and it made a huge difference, now perfectly usable for bass in the house, and a bit of sealant/gasket for the rest of the box should eliminate all the rest of the unwanted noises. A proper result in the end! I'll try it out at the monthly jazz jam next sunday and see if it keeps up! By the way, the amp is a Trace Elliot Acoustic Cube, a 7" metal cube. It's very nice with acoustic guitar, and violin too apparently.
13. Looks a bit like the Overwater bass. Strange, that!
14.
This is true. China have almost all of the worlds supply of rare-earth metals, so they have a monopoly on neodymium, among other things.
Not quite true - the US does have supplies but stopped producing when it became uneconomic to compete with China. They will resume production when its economic to do so. Rare earth metals are not as rare as the name would suggest.
15. Wem Dominator 15W. Just right for a not TOO loud band. Well within budget, though quite big and heavy. Trace Elliot Speed Twin c30 IF you can find one! Scored one for my guitarist for £325 a couple of years ago - lovely tone.
16. Bought a Levys strap from Jake, all went fine other than delays in the post over Xmas! Good man! Cheers Jules
17. Maybe they would do the lines in a dark colour. From a distance it looks plain. My fretless neck I got done for my Masters has black lines on Pau Ferro (dark rosewood colour) which looks very nice IMO
18. Holy cow Shaun! That is a beaut - I must have missed the build on that. I'm really sorry, but I'm not quite ready to move the Sei on yet, but you've still got first dibs if I ever do... Best of luck with the sale, this deserves a happy new home. Jules
19. good job the song wasn't longer.... you'd catch your death of cold!
20. Have a great gig! I hope you're getting a fortune for it!
21. Both cabs will see 250W, as they're the same impedence. Each driver in the 210 will see 125W and each driver in the 410 will see 62.5W. Both cabs will be well within their ratings, so I don't see a problem. The 210 should be less prone to farting out, as with more cone area in total you shouldn't need to push the whole rig as hard.
22. I'm sure the Ernie Ball forum would give you all the advice you need on upgrading their bridges
23. Firstly, have you checked that it isn't an output fuse at the amp that has blown, and checked the speaker with a different amp? It would be a bit gutting to go to the expense of replacing/repairing the speaker if it is only a tiddly fuse at fault. Analogy: my car wouldn't start, bought a lovely new battery. Turned out to be the starter motor after all, nothing wrong with the battery...
24. That's lovely. What is the little round thing by the upper horn though?
25. My postman kindly leaves spare rubber shockmount type elastic bands in my front garden, and I don't even remember telling him I needed some! Now THAT's service!
