We started one song in D but the leader sang the first verse in G. By the time I had worked out what his vocal key was, he was moving back towards D. It was intense!

I can confirm that many Jazz necks are labeled 7 and not 5. I suspect you need more info than that.

All my basses are magic. And lots of the basses I do not own but pick up to play are magic. I am a bass tart and will go with any bass.

If he remembered the bass he could give you a broad valuation given today's market.

I would suggest working out who the luthier was (there cannot be THAT many in Brighton) and asking him what it might be worth now. An insurance valuation is very different from a sale valuation.

Perception is such a weird thing. Work has just invested in a new studio. I plugged the new Sandberg P into the new Neve 1073 into the new ATC SCM45As. The sound I had been searching for for years was there and the search was over. 2 weeks later I spent 2 hours tracking 3 different basses through 5 different premaps (and learning the studio routing). Was the Sanberg/Neve/ATC combo still THE ONE? Nope, just another flavour of nice. Everything always changes.

Dowel, walking stick end stop and a correct diameter rod measured to size. Drill the stick and glue the metal in? Put some nice oil on the wood to make it look shiny and lush, obv. Is that it?

Phew. I guess I will still have to take the neck off and look. It has been a long time since I did that.

Now I am confused. My 66 dot/bound/lollipop Jazz is (from my reading of the numbers) Jan 5 1966. So "5=Precision" is now confusing me. I am open to the concept that I have misremembered this number, but I do not think I have. I guess I will have to pop the neck off.

Here is a question which is all a bit random. I work in a college which is considering sending students out to Europe for a week-long residential. This would include cultural visits as well as industry experience - studio visits, meeting industry professionals etc. Has anyone done this and if so would you care to share destinations and ideas? TIA

I have settled on Newtone round core nickels on most (33", 34", 35" and 36") but a set of TI Jazz Rounds sit very nicely on one of the 35" in a way they do not on some others.
