1. The more i look at the red one the more i think that basses with F-holes should always have natural finishes. If that one ever belonged to me you'd have to lock away the sandpaper!
2. If it's just for practice then you won't need that much power and you have more options. Warwick do some small combos, as do Hartke with their A series. I have the A70 which gets very loud, even the 35 is surprisingly powerful and is both small and light. I'd check out that Line6 i linked to earlier though, that's a good deal and much cheaper than buying new.
3. I'd find the cash to buy both, swap the pups and keep the hollow body/nordstrand bass, then flog the other one. Not much help, sorry! EDIT: Actually, the blue sparkle one looks ace, get that!
4. Line 6 Studio 110 for sale here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=125327&hl=line Not that light at 24lbs but not heavy either and certainly compact. Also look at the Roland Bass cube series. The only other tiny lightweight combos i can think of are the Genz Benz Shuttles and the Ibanez Promethean, both of which are way over budget
5. I bought a CXL110 which sustained driver damage in the post. The price quoted for the recone kit for that driver was $80 plus postage from the USA, then after that i'd have to pay to have the speaker reconed as it's a pro job. Thread here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...0&hl=ea+neo As it was only insured for £50 (i'm a stupid tightarse, i know!) and i expected the eventual cost of repair to be about the price i paid for the cab in the first place i fitted a suitable neo driver in there instead. Might be worth asking some of the more technically minded BCers for a suitable driver for the cab, i emailed EA to ask them what they thought of my choice and they confirmed it would be appropriate. The drawbacks are that i lost the tweeter and i'll never know what it sounded like originally. The bonus is that it made the very heavy cab a true featherweight (those custom Eminence drivers make up the bulk of the weight btw) whilst still giving enough power handling for practices. Seriously, it's much less than a third of the weight now. Sounds great too!
6. Just for a bit of balance, i had one (the old carpet covered 100 watter) and really didn't like it! Decent enough for the money but the sound wasn't to my taste and it never seemed capable of delivering volume without being pushed too hard. Eventually crapped out and wouldn't stop blowing fuses so i swapped it for a black Big Muff. I tried one of the later ones at a gig and that actully seemed quiter
7. Tanglewood Elfin? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TANGLEWOOD-ELFIN-EB1...=item4aa97025c1 They're absolutey tiny!
8.
I feel a lot of slappers are like those chavs in their Saxos banging out D 'n B at high volumes, they think it's impressive and everybody wants to hear it but most people think they are dicks.
Apart from middle aged men with cardigans and Foderas don't drive chavved out Saxos!
9.
Anyone use one? Not sure my 32kg combo would fit on one:) but was just wondering as the guitarist in the band I'm in uses one.
I used one for a gig but i thought it took too much low end away as there's no floor coupling. It was one of the Giraffe ones and comfortably took the weight of my Schroeder 1212r, which is around 50lb i think. I got mine for about £40 off eBay, dunno if they're still available. One fault i did find is that the adjustment mechanism is only on one side, so that takes quite a bit of the weight. Tbh a bit of a waste of time and money unless you just want your cab pointing at you as a personal monitor, mine spent most of it's gigging life being used by our skint guitarist who seemed to like it, but not enough to buy his own!
10.
Get Mike Lull to make you one instead
That's a much better idea!
11. I presume that for the amount of money this will invariably cost that they'll snap the headstock off and glue it back on before it leaves the factory?
12.
Found this locally, was tempted then realised i cant properly use my current bass with 2 pickups nevermind eight, also a Gorilla amp with a growl button. http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/41/75528141.html
My first amp was a 20w gorilla amp, had the growl knob and a sticker on the top which said "hear this gorilla growl!" along with a picture of the aforementioned primate in a rather agressive mood. probably worth buying just for the sticker, just as well as it was a rubbish amp. Although it was all i could afford at the time it still made me cringe every time i took it to practice. Interestingly the guitar versiions had a scream knob and similar sticker.
13.
I didn't mean he;d break it on purpose. He could very easily have leant the guitar against the wall and accidently broken it himself!
Well it is a Gibson, maybe he sneezed and the headstock snapped off?
14.
If he has thrown away the packaging then I reckon he must be pulling a fast one. You just wouldn't think to do that if you had opened the case and seen that it was broken. You'd put it straight back into the box.
If it is the same guitar then it's unlikely the buyer would deliberately break it just for £200 though. I wouldn't be happy with that amount as it would have to cover the cost of repair and compensate for the loss in the guitar's value. The buyer will have still spent a significant amount for a damaged guitar, not exactly the smartest conman! If it is the same guitar then the buyer will have to get it repaired and send a receipt from the luthier in order for the OP to make a claim (although this may vary among couriers), this ensures he's not trying to pull a fast one. If i were the OP i would contact the courier to let them know the problem sooner rather than later, also find out what you need to make a claim (photos, receipts etc.) as invariably it will be you who has to pursue it as you arranged for it and paid them.
15. Or make a clear perspex plate for it and put Sea Monkeys in?
16. It's still a beautiful bass though, it's all hidden under the pickguard. If you saw someone gigging it you wouldn't know what was under there! Tbh it's a gigging bass and has been modded by an amateur to ensure it's working life was extended. The fella bought the bass and it's his do do with as he wishes, whether he acheived his goal in making the bass more comfortable is up for debate, but the bridge mod is a practical one which no doubt improved the intonation. They're just planks of wood with metal on, not even particularly high quality or well constructed ones either. Not every early Fender has to be a piece of bass history, some will live out their days on stages where they belong until their necks warp, the truss rods snap and the bridges corrode. The collectors can have them then!
17.
As for the person who was moaning about them earlier in the thread they are alot more than I'd expect for £60 or even twice that. Which is a pleasent surprise seeing as I bought it as something cheap to play around with me once I am done with my old Squier.
I'm really liking mine now, it's a nice change from my other basses which are mainly jazzes or humbucker equipped. Stuck the EMG Select in it and strung it with old, dead roundwounds (i'm too cheap to buy a new set of flats!) and it sounds just like a Precision should to my ears. Nice and thuddy but with definition, Someone should buy the Jap Fender pickup here for £15, would make a great budget upgrade from the stock pup: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=125732
18.
I have contacted Ebay directly asking for advice, he is threatening to open a case so I thought I should seek their opinion before this happens. Oh, Ive also asked where he got his repair quote and then I think a telephone call will be in order. Beedster, you are indeed very wise!
Don't look at it as "threatening" to open a case, in most situations (like when the item is valuable) opening a case is the correct way to go. It's just a way of letting eBay know that there has been a problem with the item officially, not an accusation. I agree though, it sounds suspicious. The old "give me £XXX and i'll shut up" routine is pretty common. You need confirmation that the damaged guitar is the one you sent, i wouldn't expect someone to deliberately bork an expensive guitar just for £200.
19. I stuck an EMG Select in there no problem, i guess most P pickups will fit. Pickguards need some trimming around the neck and you may need to drill new holes, same goes for pretty much every F-style bass though! Despite the cheapo tuners mine stays in tune very well. They do look cheap but they're perfectly functional so far. Certainly more so that some other machine heads i've used which, although looking the part, have become rattly and loose over time. Regarding the neck, i think some people have found the pocket to be slightly bigger than standard (whatever that is) Fender dimensions. If you're on the lookout for a new neck it might be an idea to draw round the heel and scan it as an A4 PDF you can send to people - quite an easy way to accurately see if a neck will fit or not.
20. Beedster has it right, DO NOT DO ANYTHING YET! Today should be spent evaluating the pictures i listed above which you will receive from the buyer. If he drags his feet then inform him that you cannot continue with the claim without them, and that means all of them including the packaging. Remember, you don't actually know the guitar is damaged. You haven't seen anything to suggest it is in anything other than the condition you sent it in. You need to process this in the correct manner. First thing you should do is get the pictures, then you should contact the courier for a full refund or a substantial partial refund which covers the repair and the loss in value of said guitar. Don't rush anything, this does seem slightly dodgy but the buyer may be telling the truth. I know if i bought a Gibson i'd request the headstock to be encased in 3ft of concrete before being posted, you know a guitar has a design fault when it has a "typical break"! Also, if i were you then i'd get in touch with eBay now and make it known that the buyer is requesting an immediate refund, also get their advice on what you should do.
21.
Sounds like the courier is trying to wriggle their way out of it... fairly standard procedure. This is why I take pics of the wrapping process and the finished package whenever I send a bass.
That's a good idea, i think i'll do that from now on.
22. Sounds like you packaged the instrument securely. Make sure you get the buyer to take accurate and detailed phoos of the following: - The instrument around the damaged area and a full shot - An internal view of the box showing all of the packaging. Also the case and any other packaging. - An exterior view of the box showing any damage. All of those things were required when i claimed on a courier-damaged item. Also i had to produce a receipt of the replacement part i purchased before i could claim. I don't know how that would work with a devalued instrument though. Is it fully insured? You've done things correctly but that doesn't mean eBay/Paypal won't bum you out of the money and leave you with a damaged guitar. Another thing, if the buyer wants to keep hold of the guitar but get a partial refund as it is devalued then be careful. But then you probably already knew that! Basically, get all the information you need to claim from the courier (prob best fire off an email now and start a claim) and then get the guitar back - preferably using the same courier so they can't blame anyone else.
23. Well being born in '81 i just miss out on an early Streamer. Unfortunatley i'll have to make do with this rather lovely Wal. Who's paying for all these btw? And when can i expect it to arrive?
24.
collection only Auctions somewhere handy.
This too. Set up a search for anything with the word "bass" in it and specify "nearest first". That way you'll get all wrongly listed auctions, along with a ton of fishing stuff and car/DJ sound systems! Also worth having the occaisional look for "base".
25. I usually find the FS section here or eBay the best bets for bargains. On here recently there was a Tanglewood Warrior (Warwick-style) for £80, not so long ago there was a Vox for about £70. EBay turns up some silly bargains too, just a case of persevering and wading through the inevitable mire of junk.
