I feel particularly sorry for SMEs that do a significant amount of trade within the EU - they must be losing their sanity trying to work out what will be required soon, compared to the current simple system of pre-authorisation and compliance.

On the one hand I can see EU countries, supported by trade bodies, being keen to sort out a temporary work visa-system that's relatively hassle free and applies to multiple EU/EFTA nations - remember they will have people wanting to come to the UK too - but you can count on our gov't to balls it up by insisting on some sort of nonsense that means it will be unworkable for Brits going to the EU.

Exactly - and their friends living off pensions in the Costas are not immigrants, they're ex-pats. Totally different, see.
