1. Traded my Fender Jazz for Dave's Spector Rebop. Transaction went without a hitch courtesy of Parcel Force, it arrived from Dave in well under 24 hours. Good guy to deal with.
2. Great looking bass! Hadn't heard of Clover Basses before. Can you give a littles more detail, the body looks like Walnut? What scale length and weight? How old is the bass and is it in UK?
3. You describe it as light, do you know the weight?
4. I think it looks good! Shows care for detail, what bass is it? I would love a decent 5 string semi. I'm guessing from the backwards slopping tuners, it's a Warwick Starbass.
5.
Neepheid is quite right. I mean the back of the neck. I can understand why bolt-on neck instruments do it (even though I don't like the look of it), but to go to all the trouble to deliberately mask off the neck and have it not matching the edges of the body seems ludicrous to me. It wouldn't have to be sunburst - simply a continuation of the colour at the the point the neck joins the body would be suitably aesthetically pleasing. Nothing wrong with a gold neck on a gold bodied bass IMO:
6. '96 USA F. Jazz 5 string = 10lb. I now find this too heavy for longer than about half an hour even with a 4in wide leather strap. Spector Spectorcore semi hollow 5 string = 8.5lbs, but this feels much lighter and can be played for relatively long periods without strain. Is this something to do with design and balance? I know it's sacrilege to suggest a Jazz bass might not be perfectly designed but what do others think?
7. Believe it or not but you can buy a product called"sticky stuff remover" by a company called De-Solve-It. It works really well.
8. I found my Fender Jazz V got really heavy after a while, may be its an age thing - they feel heavier the older we are!- so I bought the Spectorcore semi hollow 5 to try and compensate. It feels loads more comfortable but it's not that much lighter, the Fender is 10lbs the Spector is 8.2lbs. May be the design and balance have a lot to do with it.
9. When you look at the list of Premium luthiers who use them one is tempted to conclude that many if not most people think. Highly of Bartolini. I have never had a bass with them fitted, not sure if I have even played one, but have listened to a few being played by others and generally they sound good to me. So my question stands, anyone tried these on the new Spectorcore?
10. Another thought for you, if you can find one, the Westone Thunder (particularly the 3 fretless) were first class.
11. Any one tried / bought one of these yet? Seen one advertised and theSpector website now lists two new colour finishes, natural and walnut. Natural looks ace! Most dealers seem to be still selling the old model with EMG pickup and don't seem to be discounting them to sell them off.
12. Back in the day, Leo was trying to mass produce instruments, but as there was very little technology much of the process was by hand. So you got some brilliant instruments and probably some dogs started on Friday night and finished on Monday morning ! The good ones survived the rubbish was junked. When the big corps took over quality dived as more of the process was by machine. Modern computer aided construction takes the variations out of production, but may not make great instruments. A good modern made one is as fine and possibly better than a vintage but it's all down to luck, if you find the great old one hang on to it!
13. You might be better off with a lined fretless to start with. I think Yamaha offer several and there are loads second hand.
14. Because I'd bought something else instead, selling usually to fund purchase. Sometimes it was a mistake, getting rid of the Fender P fretless because I'd bought a Washburn EAB 5 string - the neck was a tree trunk, should have kept the P 😥
15. Is this a "solid" paint finish or translucent?
16. The price of the Eastwood hardly makes it a "cheap" copy of an old budget line. You could probably find a second hand Charvel Surfcaster for that money!
17. But doesn't the hum from the pickups under certain lights drive you nuts!
18. La Bella Low Tensions are really good and you probably won't have to muck about with the bridge/intonation when you put them on as they are so similar to round wounds.
19. I agree about the Status, my brother has one which I borrow. The Ibanez Gary Willis is good too and I can highly recommend the Spector Spectorcore which I have which has the added bonus of a Fishman Piezo bridge. My other fav is the old Yamahe TRB and you can pick them up quite reasonably now, one was on Preloved afew months ago for £650.
20. I remember seeing Ashley Hutchings play one in the Albion Band back in the day. They were performing numbers from the album Stellar Maris so I guess that he used it to record the album too.
21. If your bass has a decent straight neck and low action, then irrespective of the price, I think you can sort most of the sound out externally either with your amp or an effects box like a Bass V-amp. I certainly don't agree that a US Fender is the ultimate! I have played some dogs out of that stable. When I got my present Jazz 5 string it was almost unplayable and needed a shim to get the neck angle right.
22. Very good point. Would be really good to hear from someone who's got one.
23. I know these have been around for a few years now, although I have only recently noticed that it's a 34ins scale semi, a bit of a rarity. However I can't find any reviews. Gear4music offer the black version to order at £289 and there is an Italian on line store offering the sunburst for 299 euros. So has anyone any experience. The prices seem too good to be true and usually if it's too good it probably isn't worth having. Another member on BC rates his Corsair, but that's a really different bass. I could really use a lighter weight fretted bass at present as I have a shoulder injury but probably don't want to abandon my Jazz bass in the long term. Anyone help, got one ? Had one?
24. My son in law who lives in California has one of these. Don't think it's bits a, just one of Fender's cost cutting exercises. If plays ok leave it alone, although switching the scratch plate and pot plate probably isn't too difficult, but the screws probably won't align.
25. Okay it's a Takamine, but as a fretless f hole electro acoustic bass, is it any better than the Aria Elecord? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=391264549491&globalID=EBAY-GB
