2.
If any of the music shops available to me had anywhere near the level of customer support that Thomann offers, then I'd have no problem keeping things local. I've even gone as far as having basses made locally to support business here. But when you're dealing with staff that won't order flatwound strings because 'they're crap and no-one likes them' even though you're standing there requesting them.... well, all of a sudden that £10 shipping charge and online buying seem pretty unbeatable.
If it wasnt for Thomanns i wouldn't have had 2 Lakland Duck Dunns or a Fender 2008 P5 in the past. No one store over here (not even the Gallery) had a Duck Dunn at the time of my first one, and when i tried to order a Fender P5 from 2 stores that were advertising them on their websites i was told they were a special order and i wouldn't be able to send it back if i didnt like it, even though they didnt have them in stock and so i couldn't try one. Thomanns told me (via a call to them) "if i wasnt 100% happy please send it back as they value their customers and only want them to be happy". Ive also had to use Thomanns last week to order a Fender pickup as no one over here had stock, other than one place who wanted £95 for it. Thomanns might be undercutting the small shops but they got where they are for a reason IMO. Its no wonder they are popular with service like this.
3.
Their prices have gone up some because they get moaned at by manufacturers who get moaned at by UK dists. It's fair though.
I remember when they first started advertising over here, there was uproar but i felt it gave our market a kick up the backside. No longer were we held to ransom by over priced music stores.
4.
so the prices they can offer are below most UK retailers because they pay far less than retailers do. I know it's business etc, but it's not fair on UK retailers that they get undercut so badly and they'd be forced to make a loss to compete. The problem is that they have such a part of the market (because of the prices) that manufacturers can't afford to not sell to them because they're bringing so much business.
I dont think they are that much cheaper any more. In the past they were but judging by a few basses ive looked at in the past few weeks Thomanns have been dearer than, say, Soundslive.
5.
Gotta say, if Thomann were to open up a UK operation and keep those sort of standards up then there'd be a lot of very worried UK online retailers trying to raise their game...
There was a thread on here discussing this. Apparently Thomann's were doing this but ive not heard any news on it yet. This must have been at least a year or so ago 9probably longer) so it probably didn't happen. EDIT: Here it is Thomann's in the UK thread
6. I know this is an old thread but i just wanted to post about Thomanns CS. We brought a LED light off them end of Jan this year. It cost £45 inc postage. It seems to have developed a fault so i emailed them yesterday to see what can be done. As its outside the 30 days send it back period we were going to weigh up the pros and cons of having to send it to Germany. I got a email this morning form Thomanns saying they are trying out a new returns system and would i like to participate in it. The email also contained a PDF with a prepaid label and all i need to do is pack it up and take it to the post office. I must say thats pretty good service. I think the total postage (both ways, twice) must come close to the cost of the light.
7. Jerry, im not going to sell the neck as this would leave me without a working bass.
8.
Hate to rain on everyones parade but the text of that add states that its a LPB so I suspect thats a mockup!
I think its obvious that the text isn'tisnt talking about this specificific bass so you could be right, but there has been a lot of talk about this on TB and apparently Musicians friend might also have put this pictureprematurelyerly as they have done it before. Time will tell.
9. Its a shame the VM doesn thave vintage frets. Its not out of the question but i'd like to give it a few weeks to see what happens first.
10. As above. Ive got my Jazz neck on my CV P but want another Jazz neck for the Jazz lol. These necks are lovely and have vintage style frets, so im not interested in anything that isnt comparable. The neck is in perfect condition and doesnt look twisted or anything liek that. I would take a MightyMite or Allparts neck with cash your way. Cheers.
11.
That's exactly right. I have one or two of these circuits in instruments. Actually, with careful selection of components and tweaking, I prefer the ordinary tone control. Then again, I play a fair amount of reggae and I'm a passive instrument codger so having a little low boost available via the tone pot is very handy.
Im with you on that. Its a nice idea but sometimes that extra little bit of low end boost makes all the difference. Just before i got my last HW-one i started a thread asking how to re wire the bass to put it back to how Jazz should be wired. As it turned out i didn't mind the GB circuit as much as i thought i would, but that was a Jazz. On my old HW-one P i did feel it lacked something when the tone was backed right off.
12. Although its not been listed or released by Squier, it seems there "might" be a new colour model coming out. No one really knows whats going on but there is plenty of speculation. Hopefully if this is true they might also update the CV 60's P colour as well. Real or Photoshop?
13. I decided to order from Thomanns after all, just to save a few £. Inc delivery came to £66.34. Pretty happy with that. Wont get it until next week of course but i suppose its best i don't start tinkering with my Bass on the day of the gig. Thanks for all the help, fingers crossed it fits.
14. If its just to amplify a signal maybe this will work. It doesn't have any mix function though so if you have music just on one side its probably not ideal. Ive got one that i use with my PC and the quality is very good. The FiiO is battery powered and could clip on to his shirt etc. The battery lasts for ages and its charged using USB from any PC/Mac/PS3 etc. FiiO E5 headphone amp Ive got a Behringer Xenyx 502 mixer and its very good, nice and cheap and would probably work perfectly.
15.
After all this talk about replacement..............have you tried cutting the mids on the EQ of the amp? G.
Tried both cutting the mids and the pickguard ;-) I use a BDDI and this does give a mid cut. I could live with the Thumper if i could get the PG to fit but as i'll have to mess around i do fancy chaning the pup to something less dark sounding.
16.
Heres another one of my old band Double Cross, here we are playing our title track at Bristol Colston Hall in 2005, I like this one :-) DOUBLE CROSS
You certainly look like your enjoying yourself.
17.
Ok, hope the firs two decide they don't like P basses in the meantime!
Ha, ill let you know if they do. All this talk of Wizard pups has just reminded me i have a set of Wizard 74's in a drawer at home. Think ill put those back in the CV Jazz this weekend to take my mind off the P.
18. Hi Gareth. Ive only just noticed all this (i dont spend as much time on here these days). I'm really gutted for you. After such a long wait and spending all that money i would be very upset. Im going to read the EBMM thread later but i hope you get this all resolved as soon as possible. IMO Its all very well having good customer service in getting this rectified but it shouldn't have happened in the first place. @Grand Wazoo. when i was over on the EBMM forums last year you seemed quite high profile over on there. I didnt realise you were banned. I would never have expect it.
19.
If you decide to part with your Thumper send me a PM that i'll gladly take it from your hands Cheers
Your 3rd in line
20. Cheers Clarky, thats perfect, in fact better than that as he has listed the dimensions as well. This is to replace my Thumper and i need a slightly smaller pup (which looks like the Fender is). While i wanted it by the weekend i can wait until next week if i have to. Its funny but i check eBay yesterday and didnt come up with anything in the UK.
21.
Have you thought about Lindy Fralin pickups? They seem to be recommended for getting a vintage Fender tone and sounding better than the original article.
I would love a Fralin, and ive had two in the past so know how good they are, but this has to be done on a low budget. Im figuring £70 max for the pickup so even a second hand Fralin is out of the question.
22. Cheers Guys. iKay. Thanks for the links. I've sent giggear a email asking if tis in stock. Im not surprised Langtoninfo have stock. At £95 thats way over the top.
23. Other than Thomanns i can find any on line other than the USA. I wanted to get it before the weekend but this doesn't look like its going to happen. Anyone know of any on-line stores that sell them? Cheers.
24. Cheers John. I had though of speaking to Andy at Wizard and asking him to make me something a bit smaller, i could even send him the stock pup covers but to be honest i still dont know where i am with all this. I've got two pickguards that both needed filing down for the Thumper, but Andy said they are standard Fender covers. The PG is supposed to be standard as well so something is out. Looking on the Seymour Duncan website all their dimensions are slightly smaller than the Thumper, and would fit the PG, assuming they are accurate. Its not easy finding accurate dimensions for other makes. I know what you mean about hot pickups, one reason i wont go for a SDQP, and a reason for wanting to try something other than the Thumper, something more vintage. I might speak to Andy and get him to measure his vintage pup, maybe that would work. I also dont want to spend a lot on this bass at the moment so a more up market pup is out of the question, and i assume a custom made pup might be a bit higher than i want to pay, but i will look in to this.
25. I know im one of the main culprits so i dont mind. Like i said, now the price has gone up im not so defensive about them. I do think the new CA's will something special though. Apparently the finish is better, it more closely matches the real Classic and it has the perfect neck for me. Who knows, only timer will tell but im sure we will cross swords again ;-)
