  1. We're all different. Peoples' attitudes to instruments range from purely functional/utilitarian - it's a tool to do a job - to aesthetic/personal - it's the instrument they feel at home with or the one they had built in exotic hardwoods that they've always dreamed of owning . Nowt wrong with that and we're all at our own particular point along that range of opinion. The original question - would you rather have 8 HBs or one high end bass - is a bit wide of the mark, in that it represents two extremes. Most of us are somewhere in the middle. We have one or two basses we really like and play most of the time, plus a beater or two that are handy for gigs in iffy circumstances or for when the kids want to mess around with them.
  2. Anyone buying that better make sure their tetanus shots are up to date.
  3. This. As long as you avoid models such as Tonehammers, where the preamps have been designed to recreate a more "vintage" voicing, you'll be fine with any good quality amp. Go shopping and try a few of the alternatives out.
  4. I love Brown Sugar. I couldn't care whether or not the lyrics are not to contemporary tastes. I just find it amusing that people get their panties in a knot over ephemeral things like pop songs when there are so many more important things to be concerned about in the world. You are correct that the N Minaj song is the one many quote, but it's just one among countless others. The difference between it and Brown Sugar is that it's sh1te and Brown Sugar isn't.
  5. Yep. Brown Sugar is truly shocking. This more modern offering from N Minaj is so much more socially acceptable: And I ain't hit that note but f*** you stupid hoe, just f*** you stupid hoe I said f*** a stupid hoe, just f*** a stupid hoe I said f*** a stupid hoe, just f*** a stupid hoe I said f*** a stupid hoe, just f*** a stupid hoe
  6. I agree with your overall argument, but would add that it isn't only the US that can produce quality gear. We do it rather well in Europe, too.
  7. Would a Strat bag do the job?
  8. Some of us are happy to do so. Over the last few years, I've bought two US made bass amps, a German PA, British accessories (DI boxes, mic's), a Czech bass and other non-Far-East-made odds and ends. I acknowledge I'm fortunate in that I can afford to do this.
  9. Bought this several years ago from obbm on here. It has not had a hard life and is in excellent condition, with its original clean/undamaged Bergantino padded cover. Single 12 with no tweeter, 8ohm. I used it to add a bit of low end weight to a pair of PJB cabs when I needed to make more noise. Have since acquired several more PJB cabs, which make this surplus to requirements. It has sat unused for well over a year. Carpet covering is clean and unmarked - see photos of all sides. A clean sounding, pokey, US built 1x12 cab for much less than the cost of a Super Compact or similar. Collection from North Hampshire - midway between Basingstoke and Andover. I'm close to the A34 and A303, so good road access. May be able to meet up to 50 miles away for petrol money. Any questions, ask away.
  10. If you play at home quietly when the kids are asleep, a decent pair of headphones would be a good choice and no risk of waking the rest of the household if you get a little too enthusiastic.
  11. I'd definitely go used. Buy wisely and you should get much of your money back if you sell it on. On a £500 new instrument you will lose around £200 once its classed as used. You asked about MIM Fender necks. The one on my Mex PJ (they are a P body with a J neck) is very similar to than the one on my US Jazz. And it's in better nick, being a lot younger
  12. I played a Hofner violin/Beatle bass recently. Neck was very narrow all the way up. That was about its only redeeming feature. Ric's are also pretty slim.
  13. Those G&L MFD pickups are plenty hot enough in passive mode. They're also the same as those fitted to US G&Ls. This is a bit of a bargain. I had one of these, but just couldn't get on with the neck (I've been playing J basses for ever). It was very well made and I wish I'd been able to bond with it as it was versatile and good sounding. GLWTS.
  14. Puzzling thread, this. It's almost as if some are surprised that musicians have achieved higher academic qualifications. When you consider what understanding music requires of you, it's more surprising that musicians wouldn't be capable of doing so. I don't mean that in a formal sense - plenty may have chosen not to pursue academic qualifications, but that's a far cry from their not being able to.
  15. At a funeral? Oh dear. I want this bloke to sing at mine.
  16. I don't want AI to generate music for me. I want it to take care of the boring, time-consuming cr@p - washing the dishes, doing the laundry, cleaning the toilet, etc - and leave me more time to do things I enjoy, like making music.
  17. As I was in my teens during the late 60s, this bloke: However, his partner in crime at Motown inspired me to play the bass. He played on Tears of a Clown, which was the first bass part that really hooked me. .
  18. I appreciate he's the classical music equivalent of Kenny G, but if you want to be clever and have the last word, have at it.

    Quent

Very happy to be the first to post feedback for Quent. He bought a Cort A5 from me and was great to deal with. Many thanks and I hope you enjoy playing it.
  20. Love this (apart from Greg Koch, who can't seem to resist playing a pastiche of everything), but Guy's a great singer as well as being mighty handy on the geetar.
  21. Yes. You ain't the only one on here who knows about classical music. My first instrument was actually the violin, btw.
  22. Debatable. Strads are pretty well all accounted for and range in value from £4m for a regular one to "name your price" for one of the more highly-regarded examples. Even a very prominent player would have difficulty in parking those sums at the kerb of a fiddle and insuring it would be a nightmare.
