1. I second the above post. "Tone wood" is a complete fallacy in solid electric instruments and just another device used to part the unwary from their cash. Yes, I know it makes a difference in the case of my fiddle or my Martin D35, but my basses? Nope.
2. Speakons the only way to go. Can't pull out and handle much higher currents.
3. [sub]Ah, Gladys. Of course. Astonishing. She showed me some slapping once and I couldn't sit down for a week.[/sub]
4. I like the Snake Oil brand of cables. Expensive, but worth it. Come in a hand crafted wooden box, made from endangered rain forest trees and a guarantee that I'll play better and women will hurl themselves at my feet. Is it time for my medication yet, doctor?
5. The one played by the best bass player in the world, of course. Wish I could remember her name...
6. Gotoh bridges the best value, imho. 201 or 203 (the latter is a heavier duty version of the BBOT). Nicely made and no sharp edges and the cheapfulness is gratifying. Of course, the Snake Oil Custom made from unobtainium is better...
7. If you don't like the J Bass sound, why not sell it (should have no trouble shifting it) and buy something you like? Aftermarket p/us a great way to empty the bank account.
8. Anyone got suggestions for a stereo power amp to use with a pre for a bi-amped rig? 400w or more a side. So many out there. Aside from the usual suspects - Crown, Yam, QSC et al, anything else worth looking at? Worth spending more on Camco, MC2, etc?
9. I admit to being a Fender fan, too. They just seem to do the job and I do love the way they look. J bass necks suits my hands. Have tried others and own a decent Yamaha, but the old Jazz just does it for me.
10. Agreed. It's an age thing. I hate reading books on Kindles, too. I'm just an old bastard
11. Shame you're so far from London. For that price, I'd have it on spec. GLWTS.
12. Plenty of used Ampeg on the 'Bay and similar. I'd try one in a shop and then look to buy used if you like it. You'll save a lot of money.
13. The words budget and valve tend not to work together. As others say, high quality output trannies aren't cheap and 6L6s, 6550s can be £40 a pop. I'd go the valve pre/transistor power route.
14. I think it's because we like the sound of a particular cab and tend to go with whatever drivers are in it from then on. Can be illuminating to try something different.

Strange Bass

Why not sell it and buy what you like the sound of? P/u upgrades always cost money (assuming you buy something decent). The whole thing tends to work as a piece, I find.
16. Touch of neck relief and strings just high enough not to buzz. Hate fret buzz.
17. I find as I get older I'm less inclined to put up with things I'm not happy with. I'm conscious that the clock is ticking (brought home to me a couple of years ago when the missus died). If I don't like a situation, I move on. Can't be arsed arguing over things any longer.
18. Don't forget AER. Their 1x10 combo is pretty wonderful. The baby EBS is nice on a budget.
19. Camden Rob and Graham are spot on. You need clarity - a clean solid platform for the HM guitar histrionics out front.
20. I agree with Dave. I reckon the Ampeg 410 HLF is about the best compromise between welly and transportability (these things are relative, of course - it's still a bit of a beast, but is no 8x10 to carry). I've used one a few times and have always been impressed - my own rig is Ampeg 1x15 plus 2x10.
21. I'm pretty sure one of the Ampeg 4x10s is sealed. Think it's the larger one, the HLF.
22. I sold a rubbish power amp to Cash Converters on the Holloway Road for about £30 (its true value, imho). They tried for ages to flog it for around £200...
23. I went from an Ampeg to an EBS head, but kept my Ampeg cabs (2x10HE and 1x15). Sounds nice.
