1. No, I'm not attempting to trade in my kids for a nice jazz bass Can anyone who has had a seven year old (medium size) take up guitar at school advise whether it should be nylon, steel or other , and what size body I should look for ? Thanks
2.
"Does no one want to make Prog Music?" (Loud shouts from all directions...) NO, NO-ONE..!
Sorry, no Not me either
3. +1 mates rates are for people you really know, in person, and who can look it over and decide, in the flesh.
4.
Some folk simply can't be helped. Have a nice life.
I don't think he was actually meaning to be rude
5. I'd seek advice, even if only for the luthier or helpful BC member to reassure you that you're on the right track. I've never needed to change string gauge and I once bought a jazz that would take a 747 under the strings from the bass player in Morcheeba. I got that colossal bow out by very slowly adding tension over many, many days. its made of wood and you need to take it slowly.By the time that careful process was over, it was happily wearing 45-110 rounds with a low action.
6.
I actually like them! A bit rough but sound great. It's my go-to string for new (to me) basses that I am not sure I'll keep, as they're pretty cheap.
Yes, good sound and lasted well. Disappointed they weren't red though
7. Fionn, I don't think bass direct have been too naughty here, their pricing is optimistic as they know a buyer will haggle and they have to service, restring, fund the bass until it sells as well as pay staff, rates, bills, vat I have bought stuff cheaply all over and sold it on at market rates if I don't like it. People on here won't buy it if it's over priced and sometimes not even then; I have children to feed and so if a small profit is made then I give it to them in some form.
8. I'm really calm about it now - maybe I'm strange Probably helps that my playing bass along badly turns two weedy acoustics into a full band sound and the crowd go nuts just because it's a bit of variety
9.
If I remember correctly, he has been quoted several times in saying that Jamerson was one of his major influences. He was also on the accompanying CD on the Standing in The Shadows of Motown book about Jamerson.
Quite correct on both counts
10. Squier deluxe - come up on eBay quite often
11. Ibanez srx595 is wide and inexpensive
12.
Where Are you based mate?
Near Nottingham but I managed to visit soton and make it out without calling you
13. I have "gone on" twice now (OM nights only) and each time it's been a song or two we decided on that night and literally threw together in the corridor I'm feeling fairly chilled these days
14. I tried them and the fender 7250 are cheap on Amazon - worth a shot and perfectly acceptable I didn't make any setup changes
15. Mine is cool along as they live in the corner that we agreed on. If our next house has enough rooms there will be a shared music room She doesn't mind my p bass, active bass, acoustic bass and 12 string guitar as they all clearly have differences; multiple p basses would be a no no, which I accept as reasonable
16.
Geek, did you take the bass to Church yet? Any reactions ?
Thumbs up, I think. One person even knew it was a bass
17. I'd have this in a heartbeat if a) I lived nearer and could justify another bass Although I am in Southampton on Tuesday ....
18.
Revelation p basses have a good reputation. Stuart Clayton, of Bassline publishing etc, has been using one recently for a project and said it was a very good instrument. J&D p bass from DV247 are also good apparently. I picked up a Squier VM p bass for £150. I love it. It's not mind blowingly stunning, but it has a real feel and charm to it
I had one, you're totally wrong ! They are actually mind blowingly stunning
19.
So I've had my bass for four months now. I took some lessons with a local tutor who showed me how to play some songs (& parts of songs) that I was interested in learning & he'd write them down in tab. After about seven lessons I realized that, while it was fun to play along, I was just copying & tried a more theory based tutor for one lesson - that was dry & no fun. Hal Leonard's 'Bass For Kids' (no laughing!) has helped me grasp reading bass clef (in very basic terms) & I've just started on HL's Bass Method book one - though it's a step up (expectedly) in difficulty. I feel more comfortable playing with a plectrum - maybe when I have reached a proficient standard I'll look at finger playing, but for now I don't want to over-complicate things. What should I also be doing -along with the HL books - if I want to progress on my bass journey?
I have total sympathy as I started again from scratch to eradicate bad habits. Kids books are fine especially if you're time challenged like me There is a place for learning songs and a place for learning theory but you should do both, in turns perhaps I agree about learning the fretboard or you'll be stuck in first position forever
20. I must be (almost) alone in not hating any bass player really. There are people that I think aren't really lighting my candle (eg Jaco/Wootten with all the widdling) but thats about as far as I get down that road. It doesnt matter if its demanding or not, if people like it then your work is done. If they get up and dance, its gold-star time. I spent three songs at an OM night playing root/(3rd)/fifth patterns as my regular partner had chosen some fifties/sixties songs that he liked (Cash, Berry, Elvis etc) and the crowd went totally mad for it. Thats why I play bass**, whats your reason ? Would they have liked it more if I had woven some intricate pattern of harmonics around the simple tunes? I suspect not. ** that and the fact that sunburst P basses look totally cool, in my humble opinion
