  1. I had a similar experience, $56 USPS ( "3 day") shipping, Import VAT, Parcelforce fee - which also included them losing the item for a week. Took nearly 3 weeks in total. Thomann deliver in about 72 hours or less (until March 2019....) I've had stuff from Portugal in about a week, no fees.
  2. Sorry to resurrect this thread but just, as a possibly final word on it, the page of "decorative" instruments on the Thomann site is almost always empty these days but their eBay page is more frequently populated: Thomann_gmbh There's no 'buy it now' option so they're obviously trying to maximise their money on it, but I've seen a few nice things go for good prices. It's funny to see this Marcus Miller Sire V7s condition listed as "for parts or not working" when the only problem is a dent in the wood near the bridge. DEKOs seem to have re-appeared in recent weeks, usually 6-8 guitars /basses pop up around mid morning, or sometimes early afternoon, and usually sell out in 2 or 3 minutes. On my third attempt I got a 30 Euro guitar ( though I did have an app which rang a bell when the dekos were listed!). There is a fiver fretless that seems to hang around for days, if anyone is interested. A bit more than the usual Deko price though. https://www.thomann.de/gb/decorative_guitars_and_basses.html
  3. Gave it a good soaking - it ruined my iPhone. Have you tried a touchscreen pen? I don't use any form of touch device, can't get on with them. I do have problems picking up M3 nuts and washers and similar small parts.
  4. Would have thought so. You can buy 'Universal' patch lead kits which contains left hand and right hand patch cables.
  5. No don't. D'Addario publish some string tension charts. For example a 100 gauge XL nickel round is 36.5 lb at E and tuned a fourth up to A is 65 lb All the grim details are here: http://www.daddario.com/upload/tension_chart_13934.pdf
  6. Thanks. Incidentally, if you put masking tape on the blackwood board (the nice blue stuff or the cheap B&Q stuff) to do any fret dressing, when you remove the tape there are fragments of wood stuck to it! Perhaps it was not roasted enough?
  7. Harley Benton use Roseacer on some recent guitars, this is thermally treated maple. I've also seen 'Blackwood' used. Not sure if this is a species or treated in some way.
  8. Thank you. I've re-enrolled in a science class.
  9. Next project - measure the inductance of a pickup? Needs some DAW kit (I used a Focusrite. PC soundcards don't work well), some free software, a resistor and a known capacitor.
  10. Dunno, they're all probably in the bathroom!
  11. Make sure the the object is supported by a rope first. Tricky bit was getting the string to hold on the peg. Rope was tied to a Hercules hanger. Ball end of string held by a small bracket with hole drilled in it. (could also maker a pendulum and time the period - the possibilities are endless!) But I think I'll stick with bathroom scales in the future.
  12. There is no atmosphere, you will not hear those no-longer-heavy bass cabs.
  13. The hypothesis seems to agree with the theory. Hung the bass on a rope (for safety). Attached a guitar third string. Wound tuner until rope went slack. Closest I could get was B flat (233Hz), the string started to slip on the tuner if tightened further. String weight is 0.00005 pounds per foot (15 gauge), length 17.5 inches, using D'Addario formula: Tension = 0.00005 x (2 x 17.5 x 233) x (2 x 17.5 x 233)/386.4 = 8.6 pounds Not too far out, weight on scales (with assistance of Mrs P) is 8 lb 11 oz
  14. Attach a foot or so of guitar string to a tuner, hang the bass from a door lintel, adjust tuner so the string plays the nearest note. Measure length of string. Calculate the tension = weight. (You'll need the formula from the string manufacturer) NOTE: I've never actually done this, please don't try it, it may be dangerous, it's only a theory.
  15. Pickups work because they have Inductance and a magnet. Please go to a Michael Faraday lecture immediately. He knew stuff.
  16. I used an electric drill. I'm sure the drill was made in China (B&Q), however it did run clockwise.
  17. Mark Boyle, the lighting man on the tour, recalls the night Martin Luther King was killed, after which Jimi played an improvised lament, he describes as harrowing. It's about 1/3 down on this page. http://www.boylefamily.co.uk/boyle/texts/beyond.html
  18. Which leads to conspiracy theory(s) http://www.woodstockstory.com/jimi-hendrix-murdered-conspiracy.html
  19. Just tried to log on on another PC with my updated super secure password. I got one letter wrong ( I never was any good on keyboards). I was immediately locked out for 14 minutes after just one attempt. I suppose this is the new forum software. Just thought I'd LOG this complaint....
  20. Some of the CDs released since 1996, are quite remarkable. I'd recommend South Saturn Delta at least. The others are very good also. Sad that the many hours Hendrix spent in the studio was not released in his lifetime. Some of the stuff released before the family got hold of the estate was dreadful. One track, Star Spangled Banner, at Woodstock fades out on the opening riff of Purple Haze. That's really s*** . Thankfully the 2 CD Woodstock set is available. I think the bass is mixed better on Watchtower on the CD compared to how I remember it. That's the one supposed to have been played by Hedrix on a short scale (from Bill Wyman?) while Noel was sulking down the pub, or something like that. Who knows?
  21. Yep, angle. Looking at the published spec for a Gibson SG bass neck fit, the neck angle is 1.5 degrees. The joint angle tolerance is given as 0 degrees 0 minutes 15 seconds. That is a quarter of a sixthieth of a degree! I presume that is the accuracy of modern CNC machining. This is a set neck, so has to be correct as it can't be shimmed.
  22. Fate is telling you to get an Ibanez....
  23. +1 for the GSR200. I got one a few months back. Meanwhile my Fender P hangs on the wall! Very light, easy to play neck. Frets were good. Can't fault the P/J pickups for the price. Harley Benton's are OK, good value for the price. - I have what I think is a Ibanez/Yamaha copy, its not quite as good fret-wise and slightly heavier than the Ibanez, so I'd go for a second hand Ibanez to fit your budget. Avoid Harley Benton's on Ebay, there may be a few Deko's out there!
  24. A small cab can be useful in the smallest room, put your feet up while taking a dump. See Page 19 (Look Inside) in this book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gut-inside-story-bodys-under-rated/dp/1922247960#reader_1922247960 In other places, any horizontal surface in our house soon gets filled up with irrelevant objects. But the carry handle on my Fender guitar combo often gets in the way. I should remove it as I don't gig.
  25. Mike Bloomfield's 1963 Telecaster re-fret. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvJHaAhoJ-g
