1. Where is Rose when you need her? She would settle this thread. I've no idea what Rose would have thought to all this.
 2. How to break a string, at 1:52. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ8AcEYTEFY
 3. Are you able to build stuff, or know someone who can? There is this option for low power: "VCB is a method for controlling the power supply voltages within a valve amplifier. By controlling this voltage, you can control the amplifier's power output. VCB provides a continuously controllable voltage, and you can rotate a knob to get as much or as little power output as you like. The reason why this is a popular upgrade for valve amplifiers is that you can get the amplifier's natural power valve distortion at much lower room volumes." http://www.ampmaker.com/store/VCB-VVR-kit-for-cathode-biased-amplifiers-ZK02.html There is a kit for a 4W amp on that website.
 4. Just bought a bottle of Tru-oil, so I'm ready to go. A shame to cover up nice wood with paint. Great result you have there, I have one question, did you apply the oil to the fretboard also? Thanks.
 5. The bridge on mine was thicker than the average BBOT. Do P bass poles ever line up? Don't think it matters much. Well worth the price to try out a short scale. Not too keen on the white pickguard, black would look better. I fitted Status flatwounds. (a bit thumpy sounding, since they are very tightly wound). Curiously the G string was rather loud, but Ps can be adjusted for height on each string.
 6. Not sure this is based on actual classics but it leans towards Jazz, covers all the theory and you get to play along with Peter Erskine (!) on the enclosed CD. (hides behind parapet - it has both tab and dots, Don't think Ed's book has tab) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Walking-Bass-Acoustic-Electric/dp/0793580420
 7. I use homeopathic audio cable. It's copper with one part per million oxygen.
 8.
Wow! Where do I get a cable that stores charge from?
See here: http://mlg.eng.cam.a...antCircuits.pdf See Figs 4 & 7: "The figure shows that the circuit exhibits voltage amplification properties. At the resonant frequency," There is an energy transfer between the inductor and the capacitor, both of which are capable of storing energy. So you can get a voltage or current amplification. But note that the paper says: "It is important to note that as this is a passive circuit the total amount of power dissipated is constant." So you don't get something for nothing!
 9.
Wow! Where do I get a cable that stores charge from?
You don't. The trace is in dBu, so it is a level relative to some reference, not an absolute quantity. 1dBu is what you get when 1mW is fed into a 600 ohm load - the units used in studio VU meters. So it is just a ratio. I guess their measurement system is not calibrated though. And the last trace in the link on post #100 does not look right. A P bass pickup does not respond up to 10kHz as they show, more like 3-4kHz. That last plot looks more like a guitar to me. Here is what I get with a Spice model of a P Bass with a short 1m lead (Red) and a 6m lead (blue). 250K pots, tone flat out. The higher capacitance 6m lead (700pF) reduces the cut off frequency and has a resonant peak. With low capacitance cable (which you should use), the resonance frequency is above cut-off so you don't see it. Whether this makes and difference in a hearing test is probably not worth bothering about.
 10.
I notice nobody seems to have done a blind test, ie someone else plays the same riff with different cables or the tester has the cables changed and plays without seeing what cable is being used, surely this would take away any preconceptions and give a proper balanced opinion. A bit like a blindfold food test! I wonder if people are expecting a certain change in tone etc that's what they perceive to get rather than there actually being a change.
Sounds like a good way to waste a few hours If you do this, use a passive bass, since an active bass is likely to drive the cable without any difference being noticed (Can anyone confirm if this is the case?) Also ideally go into something like Focusrite, then there will be no unwanted interaction between the different cables and the amp.
 11.
To measure the attenuation you need a frequency generator and a scope. Measure the amplitude of the frequency at one end of the cable and at the other end simultaneously and increase the frequency. You'll see the amplitude drop as the frequency rises.
This is not relevant if you are measuring a cable isolated from a passive bass as you have removed the pickup inductance from the circuit. The high frequency cut off is dominated by the large pickup inductance and the pots and tone cap which forms a low pass filter. The cable would contribute to the low pass point, but it may also resonate with the inductance and produce a peak below the cut off point, which would accentuate frequencies at this point. If the cable capacitance is very low, this resonance is above the cut off point and is negligible. It usually is for a bass and good low capacitance cable.
The crux is where the frequency cut off is and whether you can actually detect it.
Yes!

 13.
Copied and pasted from a post of mine from 2010: Funnily enough fellow basschatter davemuadib and I spent a geeky afternoon A/Bing cables back to back. We did obbm, (klotz) monster bass, elixir, zaolla, generic cheapo and hotlines. Long story short monster had a VERY obvious, pronounced low mid hump which made em sound deeper and punchier but at the expense of top end sparkle and clarity. Zaolla sounded superb, very neutral and open but with depth and solidity. Obbm sounded very similar to the zaolla, slightly less zingy and airy but very close nonetheless. Just not quite as 'expensive' sounding. The elixir was also good and very flat sounding but a tad uninteresting. The hotlines (old academy of sound cables) were still great I remembered why I liked em. Very punchy and forward sounding, a bit like a loudness button going in. The zaolla, monster and elixir were thicker and the zaolla felt the best made. The hotlines and obbm cables felt lighter and thinner. Since doing the test I've retired my monster cables to back ups and bought all obbm's which I'm very pleased with. The transparency goes well with the berg cabs and they are cheaper than zaolla! I still rate monster and never had any issues with them. People that say there are no differences between cables should def spend an afternoon doing some A/B listening to a few brands. It's pretty big differences in some cases, less in others. The biggest difference was the monsters bass boost/(treble cut) to my ears. Maybe Dave will chip in ? But the differences are there for all to hear! Simply no doubt about that. But onstage with all the rest of the band going ? Well there lies the real debate ;-) I just like to know my stuff sounds good and is reliable. :-D Edited by gafbass02, 24 October 2010 - 05:26 PM.
A high capacitance cable can give a hump. If forms a resonant circuit with the inductance of the pickup (that's my guess), so you get a peak response just before the cut-off frequency formed by the pickup and pot resistance & tone cap. I think guitar players may try to achieve this? The length may be critical, else the hump falls above the cut off, if the capacitance is low, which probably does not happen with a guitar. A passive bass tends to roll of at a few kHz., guitar much higher. Think I need a OBBM right angle both ends (they seem to be like hen's teeth) , so I don't bust another plastic socket on the amp. Klotz is good stuff.
 14.
..... that kind of money would be better spent with OBBM!
The mop-tops would be real nowhere men, without OBBM cables. Then we can digress into Plain Black -v- Coloured -v- DayGlo ...
The big issue is straight or right-angled plugs. We need to sort that regardless of where your socket is located. (unless you have one of those silly angled on the front jacks)

 18.
Always liked the version by Gladys Night as well. Although a different vibe and feel from the Marvin Gaye version, it has a terrific, funky Bassline.
