We play a half hour set 8-8:30 on Friday 30th August at the Dublin Castle, Camden. Don't say you didn't have plenty of notice!
In the diary man!

Elixir Strings massive price increase...
xilddx replied to fretmeister's topic in General Discussion
Try Cleartone EMPs, they are f***ing awesome! And 27 quid a set of 4. I tried Elixir and they felt too coated, I didn't like them. -
It looks like a JayDee.
I've met a few (Reading was probably the most famous internationally) but never talked technique. Our singer once asked Brian Tatler what the secret of succes was and his reply was "write good f***in songs, its that simple.."
What's old Brian doing now?

I was looking for info on some strings for my Hohner Jack Bass, I didn't like the stainless ones I was using. I googled and Basschat was near the top. That was about 5 years ago.

Ad and Clarky, thanks chaps!
Bah! Not around. Have a bump for a great band. BC'ers in the area really should get along to see London Zulu, they are super-fab-brill. Hope you have it large, Nige!
thank you mate! x

I like the shape but that hole looks totally arse.
I cant see how the way you play makes much difference. I mean, the only real change you can make is to attack. Same with a pick. You cant change a sound by plucking the string a different way. There only is one way to pluck a string. The only difference is how hard you pluck it. Possibly, a finger nail being slightly longer might make a slight difference, but I still think its a load of bollocks that you can change your sound drastically by playing" differently"
I agree with you in some ways, in that the effect of hitting strings in different ways on an electric bass does not have the level of variance that it would on say a classical guitar, and that some people do talk a lot of bollocks on this subject. BUT, players do have very different sounds when they play the same instrument. When people say fingers, they really mean BRAIN. The way each note is attacked, the way the right and left hands interact, the left hand techniques used, the minute decisions people make while they phrase a musical passage, these all combine to make very significant differences that add up to a personal style of operating the instrument. That's what I think people mean by 'fingers'.

Great stuff, Rob! Very best of luck with it, sounds like you have it nailed already!
That story is from Bill Bruford's autobiography isn't it? The track in question is called Calliope from Al's Scenario album (can't find it on youtube but I think it is on Spotify) - that quote always baffled me a little as there is nothing difficult or fast on it.
Yeah that's right mate, and I remember you telling me about it being pretty easy. I'll have to have a listen

Great blog Silvia! Thanks for putting that together. It was a brilliant day, and it shows in your blog. x

I could make you some out of John Hall's head if you want? But it won't be fine.
PS Amazed at all these folks who have never suffered a broken string - good on you... or alternatively, try harder!
I broke an E string once, only break ever. I changed it on stage during a song in almost milliseconds. Two individuals approached me afterwards and congratulated me on the supersonic string change, but not the music.
I agree - I'm at the gig to watch him play, not go out for a beer with him...!
I reckon he drinks creme de menthe.
Left for Red? Valous? Both from the Midlands and use board / PA monitor guitar rigs.
I've honestly no idea mate, he didn't say who they were, but it was in London. He did say they weren't playing Rickenbackers so it can't have been the Beatles.
Yes an amazing player indeed. I think i've seen him about three times. Twice at Hammersmith and once at the RFH. I take anything with a pinch of salt i hear about musicians etc on forums. You don't know in what context half of the comments were made in so if i've learned anything in life that's to trust my own instinct and judgement about people. I really couldn't care less if a musician is an a***hole or not as long as i like their music and wonder (but not for long) why others are really bothered. They're probably the same people who phone up the council when the yellow lines start to fade outside their local post office.
Bless up!
How does he play the bongos at the same time as the guitar?
I already made that joke upstairs mate
i have it on pretty good authority that he's not a nice person to work with or be around spent his first set complaining that he didn't have a stage fan was found a fan during the break and then proceeded to complain that the fan was too loud asking the audience after every song if they could hear it and pointing his talkback mic at it saying "clearly the engineer can't" but agreed incredible player all round shame really
He was a bit patronising to Tony Levin once, probably not deliberately. Tried to tell him the notes to a difficult fast run on a recording session, but Tony just said play me the run, Al did, Tony heard it, copied it exactly and got a perfect first take. If you've got your head up your arse learning highly advanced music most of your life, your social skills are probably going to suffer.

Sorry, I have to post this again Pedro Sierra, a Flamenco. It's the authentic origin of what Al is doing. And Bilbo, I just plugged my electro classical into some mental reverb and flatpicked the f*ck out of it, haven't had so much fun in ages Cheers!
