1.
Anyone got one I could pinch and tweak for our purposes. It's an outdoor gig. We're under cover (marquee thingy) but the punters aren't. Ta Les
Hello Les, Who has asked you for a risk assessment? Who is it for? Just your band? What activities is it for? Just for your band playing, setting up and tearing down? Who is responsible for setting up the stage, providing services, security, welfare etc? What involvement do your local authorities have in the event? Wondering why you've been asked to complete one.
  2.
A very long lead, play out front in soundcheck , go back on stage and alter the amp, go back out front. Once happy, try to live with the "on stage sound". Often when you get that tone on stage, it sounds dull out front.
You lose all your tone with very long cable as any fule no.
  3. £4.80 for a bottle of f***ing Sol?! And that was the least of our worries last night. The venue had a good stage and a nice room, and soundcheck was good, apart from the singers not being able to hear themselves properly from the two flying monitors. Then I found out that because they did not have enough mics for the the upstairs and downstairs venues, they charged us £85 to hire mics and stands, the owner told this to the two bandleaders and the promoter the day before the gig, I feel sure that was a deliberate tactic. Cancelling on principle was discussed but too many people would be let down at such short notice, and we had two young rappers playing a few songs with us, it was their first time on a stage and they were the best part of the night really. There were so few people in the venue that we delayed our set by an hour and went on at midnight. We were expecting a large party of people who turned up an hour late. We do the first song. The sound on stage was dreadful. We were the only band on so no f***ing excuses Mr sound engineer. After two songs about half the audience of about 50 left and there was a steady exodus through the set, there were about ten people left by the time our set finished. We found out from some friends after that the sound was so loud that no-one could hear anything and it was painful. A few people including two of our friends who come to most of our gigs had asked the guy on the desk to turn it down, he refused. We played like sh*t. 85 f***ing quid, what a c***. I will never play at a venue run by this cockroach again.
  4.
And that would sound like Guy's Warwick? You're having a laugh mate. Have a word yourself Edit, to say: Sorry if that came over a bit strong but they are not comparable. .
Dave Swift uses them ...
  5.
Nice one Nige, it'll be great to meet you
Likewise mate

    Why??

I know, green's disgusting on a guitar innit.
  7.
I am so sorry, I would hate to give that impression
8.
I have been using elixirs for years, but if I have to endure such a huge price increase I will be changing to another brand. This kind of price increase is an insult to bass players.
I've used DR Black Beauties (coat wears off very quickly and they die fast too), Elixirs (too much coat, very soft feeling), Warwick EMPS (superb but expensive (£37, made by Cleartone), and now I use Cleartone, the same as Warwick EMPs but £23.50 on ebay. See my post above about their characteristics.
  9.
We have gone right off track with the original post. he was asking how you get a decent sound. A few people said its down to how you play, but I say its down to how you buy, because I can play fine and I find a difference in my sound when I buy different gear...simples!
Please don't say 'simples'. It has the same effect on your monologue as having a sneezing fit in the middle of giving someone a bollocking.
  10.
I'd say that when people say 'fingers' they ought not to mean 'brain', but they should really mean 'person'. My brain alone doesn't play bass any more than my fingers alone do; I play bass.
Granted.
  11.
Strangely - they do turn up from time to time in Uncle Horrid's garage I just recently scored a Jazz gold anodised plate from him - rare as a rare thing with bells & knobs on Mines going on an faded Olympic White, rosewood board fretless. You never know he might have a Jazz 'onesie' plate somewhere Best of luck.
Is that unclehorrid.co.uk? Congratulations of scoring one, need pics please!
  12. Just ordered the Strat PG. Genuine Fender aluminium gold anodised. £27 on ebay including delivery from the States The bass is going to have to be custom made.
  13.
What about the Bass Doc Nige?
Yeah, Bass Doc and Shuker are on my list to contact now. Jon made me a brilliant mirror PG for my home build, but again, it's quite expensive as he had to make a template. Thanks G.
  14.
These guys do them to your spec for €48 http://www.bass-part...uard-Sondermass
Wickid! Thank you! I have emailed them. Sims have got me a little worried though, they told me the process and why it costs so much, so I hope it's not going to end up being a nightmare. "We have to scan, create plot lines, cut out, sand, pollish, acid etch & then post out for anodising, pay for post out & return from the anodising company. It takse arround 3 to 4 weeks to complete. We certainly don't go booking our hollidays in the bahamas on the back of getting an anodised pickguard order that's for sure but that's what it takes to make a one off that is of good quality."
  15.
DO IT. At least the strat one should be easier to find
Indeed! http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/pickguards_genuinefenderstdstrat.htm
  16.
Can't help you I'm afraid but I hope you find one because that would look stunning!
Thanks Paul. I know The ivory pup covers and knobs on gold, with the black and maple is making me salivate, I might get one for my matching Strat too!
  17.
Here you be Nige, £26: http://www.guitarpar...b0RkalZIWnZKSGM
Thanks very much mate, but that's a normal Jazz PG, I need the one piece PG with the controls mounted on it. Can't find one anywhere! Like this ..
  18. I'd like one for my 83 Jazz, but it's an all in one PG. I just got quoted £170 from Sims as they are tricky to make apparently. Where can I get one at a reasonable price? Anyone here had one made? Cheers! Nx
  19.
I'm speechless - literally!! With all due respect, I could not disagree more. I'd suggest that you'd have no problem identifying, say, Pino, whatever bass he was playing and through whatever rig. IMHO it IS "all in the fingers (or pick etc etc)". Mind you, I have only been electric playing bass for 45+ years, so what do I know?!?!
You have, perhaps unwittingly, agreed with iceonaboy. You have implied that if you handed Pino Robbie Shakespeare's Steinberger with a massive dub tone that Pino would be instantly identifiable, therefore all that matters is what and how he's playing, the tone is irrelevant. What the fingers are doing is what the brain is telling them to do, and since we are all individuals there will be very many nuances that will reflect the experienced and musical player's individual style - technique, note choice, certain preferred musical devices and themes, and the space they use. People keep saying 'it's all in the fingers' and I think it's one of those completely meaningless stock phrases. It's all in the brain. There are plenty of musicians who've been playing for donkey's years and have no recognisable style, so with all respect, pulling rank based on age and length of time playing doesn't really mean sh*t. Put Geddy on any rig and he'll probably sound like Geddy, and Geddy's fingers are only a fragment of the equation.

  21.
Just bought a set of these clear tones. Need a heavier gauge for the Ricky and someone suggested Elixirs. Be great if they work out. Reasonably cheap, just over £22 delivered from eBay.
Do let us know mate.
  22.
I actually think, the "perfect bass" is a marriage of tone and looks. You dont want something that sounds awesome , but looks pants and vice versa
And comfort.
  23.
Given all the discussion we have on here about finding that elusive tone (whatever 'that' actually is), I'm rather surprised that 99% of the comments are all about the aesthetics of the thing. Anyone outside the bass fraternity could be forgiven for thinking that all we really care about is what a bass looks like, not what it sounds like. Could it be that GP, as an internationally renowned professional bass player is bucking the basschat trend by being more concerned about tone than looks? Indeed could that be why he's an internationally renowned professional bass player in the first place?
Well given the finish on it, I imagine GP cares about looks too, that's why he's has refins in the past. The fact is it's got more tonal options that the average bass, but then, you can more or less achieve that with active electronics. It's not an innovation, it has practical difficulties in that you'll have to remember where those pups were placed to attempt tone replication in the future (strip of tape and a chinagraph above that hole?) Beyond the first month I bet those pups get set and left where they are. So for that reason, I see it more as a development tool that allows one to find the perfect pickup position, then you get the good looking version routed to your preference without needing your new bass to look like a filthy squat bath tub.
  24.
That's beyond excessive, seeing as the guitar strings have only gone up a max of 16%. I may have to try xilddx's suggestion of Cleartone EMPs when i'm next due for a change. Liam
Seriously man, they are bright and rich and I get a good thump out of em. I use the 100-40s. The coating is 1 micron so they feel pretty much like plain nickel, nothing like that horrible sticky roughness of stainless. The compliance is quite soft. The brightness lasts for ages too, and the coating does not flake or come off, and I play hard, and with a pick sometimes. They make the Warwick EMPs, but Cleartone are ten knicker cheaper. Get them from PaulCommerford on ebay, he's cool, Stringbusters are out of them at the moment. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cleartone-6440-Nickel-Plated-EMP-Treated-Bass-strings-40-100/300736510321?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D8358045449947679425%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D300736510321%26 I just checked and the bloody price has dropped a fiver! They are now £23.50!
  25. Chay, thank you mate! That's very kind. I'll let you know if we get off our arses
