1.
I have just acquired one of these from a mate - anyone have an idea what they are worth ? Don't seem to come up often on the sale board I'm now firmly a precision fan so its surplus to my need Thanks
They are about 210 new, but older sh ones go for about 100, new ones in ace condition about 130ish. I might be tempted to buy it off you as I need one. Send me some pics and details mate.
 2. Steve's a totally wickid drummer, and a dear friend, I used to play with him in fister (my brother's rather heavy beat combo). I'm sad he's off to live very far from here next week. A lot of my best friends have done that, I sometimes wonder if it's me One of his last gigs in the UK, cracking band. He's a metal drummer, and the reason I love his playing so much is because he does reggae and ska so well for a white boy. He's got real soul
 3. Right I'm going with Uncle Horrid. He's got a great idea how to make the metal-capped black plastic material look damn good and as close to an anodised one as is possible with this stuff. Thanks Howard! I'm getting a genuine Fender Strat one, so when they're both fitted in a months time, I will post pics and my thoughts on how close the looks are between them. From my searches it seems plenty of people are after one of these in gold anodised (very expensive and hard to get) so if I can direct them to Howard for a cheaper but similar looking option it's a double win.
 4.
Ouch! Just read this. I hate it when you get dicked around by a venue like this. It's a hard call on cancelling beforehand.
Yes, it's doubly difficult because all these muthas know eachother too, so if you cancel based on even this gross inequity, you can be sure the **** will tell all his mates on the circuit (he used to own Cargo) that you are a buch of f***ers who cancel last minute and you'll find gigs hard to get because of your new reputation. I'm still angry about it, but hey, what can you do. Bands get f***ed around all the time. Anyway, we have a lovely gig booked at the Elgin in Ladbroke Grove in September, that should be a nice one. the Zulus will overcome
 5.
That's a shame! Can they do them in any colour you want as long as it's white?
I think they do cream aswell I'm going with Howard now. Shame I can't get a real gold anodised one for less than £170. I got the Strat one for about £20.
 6.
I have an 83 plate which I offered to have sprayed gold but I can also do the 'gold backed by black plastic' option. Forgot to mention that to Nigel. PM for a competitive quote if required
Ahh! There we are then! Please PM me a quote Howard, thanks!
 7.
Have you got a recording of it? If you dont you honestly cant be sure. Oh you can be sure thats how you felt about playing it on stage where you were, but unless you have a decent recording of the FOH in the room, and the audience reacction to the gig in the moment you cant judge a gig purely on how many cockups there were. Even if you can hear bodges in the recording, its the audience that 'know best' regarding the energy and the excitement and emotional impact you delivered. Right notes certainly play a part, and all the better if they are in the right places, but I am a pretty firm believer that the right notes int he right place must also convey the right energy and excitement and emotion to the audience or you may as well be a wall of washing machines as far as the audience (and me) are concerned....
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/7919-how-was-your-gig-last-night/page__view__findpost__p__2112624
 8.
That sounds like the material Howard offered me at first when I enquired about a gold plate, have you asked him about that option? He might save you a bit on £54.50 Sims prices
No, Howard gave me another option but would rather go with the brushed gold metal-topped black backing mate. Thanks though. I don't think 54 quid's too bad tbh. The blank costs £30.
 9. Looks like I will be going with an option Sims suggested .. "We can do a brushed gold with black plasic backing for £50.00 + £4.50 P&P in the UK. The top layer feels like metal but the backing is black plastic"
 10.
What about the Bass Doc Nige?
No dice there either
 11.
These guys do them to your spec for €48 http://www.bass-part...uard-Sondermass
"Hello, no,sorry, we cannot do metal custom pickguards kind regards Ruediger"
 12.
The Stevie Ray Vaughan one "Caught In The Crossfire" is a good read and the Guy Pratt book is very funny! No one has mentioned "The Dirt" by Mötley Crüe! Very entertaining and will amaze you with the quite awe inspiring dumbness of the protagonists...!
It's a great read, and also quite sad, the author tells the story really sympathetically, it's not all about drugs, drink and pooching groupies.
 13.
Hah! Excellent, but I bet you just all carried on as if the f*** up was whatwas intended all along
It was a truly crap gig mate, and yet we got great comments by people you would expect to know better. I've been depressed ever since
 14. I always love vocal cues the most. I use them a lot. But doing that when the lyrics are in Zulu, and you have a repetitive one bar bass line with repetitive drums and an improvising percussionist over 92 bars before a one bar drop, one can either count (impossible and awful to do), or one learns those vocals. If the vocalist loses it too, then one is f***ed. It happened on Friday. We f***ed it up beatufully
 15. Wictor is also going to be publishing Scott Thunes' memoirs as a book soon. That I can't wait for!
 16.
Not exactly a biography but four of the best bassist interviews you'll probably ever read - In Cold Sweat by Thomas Wictor.
It's a cracking read! And he just published a new book as a result of that massive thread he started on Talkbass, Ghosts and Ballyhoo: Memoirs of a Failed LA Music Journalist. I just started reading it and it's bloody fabulous so far, each chapter has an interlude by Scott Thunes, and boy, are they interesting to read! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ghosts-Ballyhoo-Memoirs-Failed-Journalist/dp/0764343386/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371491387&sr=8-1&keywords=ghosts+and+ballyhoo
 17. I'm just obsessed, in my own small way, with music. Some instruments I adore, some less so. I'm a frustrated drummer, but I love guitar, and bass is my current voice, I love bass. But I don't think anyone is born a bassist anymore than I think anyone is born a butcher.
 18.
Thanks for the help everyone. Gonna use one of the templates and knock one up. Sort of assuming that other than our equipment being safe and PAT tested everything other than our own house keeping on stage, like security to keep the public off, electrical supply etc is going to be he managements part. To be honest I think if I downloaded the NASA space walk risk assessment and sent it to the agent it would just be filed and not read.
It's a legal document, take it seriously even if it does seem like it's a bit OTT on behalf of the venue. If you want opinion on your RA, post it here, I think it will be interesting to discuss risk management and perception.
 19. Is the Wanted section experiencing a higher volume of traffic as a way of negotiating a way around the fees?
 20.
Nige, all it says is "Please forward your insurance cover and risk assessment" It also says if outdoors then venue to provide adequate PA (ours won't cope) and if indoors band to provide PA. Also if we are prevented from performing due to inclement weather then the fee will still be payable. Thats it really. Les
Ok, so you need a general risk assessment for your own activities - setting up, playing, tearing down etc. Is your kit PAT tested and do you use RCDs? Do you have public liability insurance? Your RA should be simple as possible. It's a simple five steps: ID the hazards; Decide who is at risk from your activities and how (you and the public); What are your existing precautions; what extra precautions need to be put in place; decide the likelihood and severity of of the risks, review and implement your assessment. You only need to consider significant risks that could cause real harm (electricity, manual handling, slips and trips, etc.) Don't get trapped into trying to prevent every possible eventuality. Have a quick look at this. http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/casestudies/ I have to go out now but I'll be back about 6pm mate.
 21.
Thanks Nige, the singer's coming here in a few minutes and it was on the contract apparently so I'll quizz him and get back to you.
Cool. It just sounds a bit odd, probably a standard contract proforma or summat. The venue management are generally responsible for HSE compliance, your RA should only be for what your band are doing, it should be very simple. I'm surprised you've been asked at all.
 22. Les, if you want to PM me their request for a RA, I'll have a look and help you get it sorted.
 23.
Well, this is awkward.
Beware the Google Alert
 24.
Thanks guys Nige, it's the agent who has booked us for this event http://www.guysthatc....uk/WHATSON/390 who wants it. Les
Ok, interesting What activities did they specify the RA should cover?
 25.
I use these all the time at work, I coach people with Learning Disabilities so have to be covered in all areas. Make a table and use these as the column headings: Hazard, Outcome, People / property at Risk, Severity / Likelihood. Hazard: What is causing the risk? i.e. water, bad weather, messy wire on stage Outcome: What could happen? i.e. slips trips & falls. physical injury damage to instruments, death People / Property at Risk: Performers, audience, staff etc Severity / likelihood: Grade each one: A= Chance of Death B= Long term injury lasting 3 days or more, C= minor injury. 1=likely to occur, 2=chance of occurring 3=unlikely to occur. Example: Hazard = rain water. Outcome = slips trips falls, electrocution, damage to equipment. People/Property = performers, audience and staff. Severity outcome = A2 because electrocution can kill and there is a chance of it occurring. Now you need to state how you are going to 'deal' with this hazard. So in a new section of the risk assessment you need to list Measures. For rain water your measure might be: stage to be covered, show to be cancelled if excessive rain fall, mops and buckets to hand, equipment to be placed under cover etc. Then your final section is actions to be taken. What do you need to do before the gig and what do staff need to do during the gig to continue doing during the gig? For example, keep an eye out for rain, ensure equipment is in the right place, keep a mop and bucket to hand etc etc. Now do this for anything you can imagine going wrong at the gig! Hope this helps;
Hello mate, you're on the right lines, but it all depends on the situation and activities. You may also need specific assessments for certain hazards, as well as a general risk assessment. The assessor may need expertise in some areas (electricity, work at heights, rigging, etc, in order to conduct a risk assessment and decide suitable precautions.
