1.
By retreating into a bubble, it would seem. Classic depressive, perhaps? I think a few of us would recognise some of the symptoms - I know I did. Just not quite to such a self-deceiving extent! Catch 22 sounds awful - sue me and I'll go bust, and then nothing will be finished. Shameful.
I haven't had time to read the whole thread, I suppose I should before leaping to conclusions. Still accepting cash off people though isn't he?
 2. I find it unbelievable how tolerant some of these people have been! TEN F*CKING YEARS! How can this Darrin prick live with himself?!
 3. Superb! Thank you!
 4.
Its the obsessive gear cyclers that have a problem though, not people like yourself. You have realised that getting a particular tone is only possible in highly controlled conditions unlike those who stand 5 feet away from an amp blasting 100db past their knees in largely adverse acoustic conditions and wondering why they don't get the "that sound" that their hero gets on the CD apparently using the same gear (I say apparently, because in reality I imagine that a lot of recorded bass sounds are DI to the desk with EQ, amp sims and effects applied later).
Yes, you are absolutely right. The digital revolution is here. Thank goodness
 5.
Well, I think you're absolutely wrong -- not because I disagree with your opinion, but that you're saying I'm doing things that I am not doing. Your claim is simply erroneous. I never ONCE said I thought someone was wrong for liking someone I didn't care for. Not ONCE. In fact, I've said quite the opposite. Maybe you have me confused with someone else.
I wish there was a well loaded bong near you, and that you would take advantage of its proximity.
 6.
MB1. With Mr Zappa's vast body of work I find there's something for everyone...it's just a case of finding your preference You can't go far wrong with... "The Best band you've never heard"
That's a great album, I prefer MAJNH by a shade. I've been really getting into the YCDTOSA series lately.
 7.
I'm not sure what I won nor do I care to have won. I just hoped you learned that you shouldn't make presumptions about people. You may want to watch that.
Thanks for the advice man, appreciated.
 8.
It was close enough and you know it. Besides, anything more would just be more pointless engagement.
OK old chap. You win.
 9.
My mistake. I most have misunderstood you when you said... "You are obviously not keen." "Your argument has no weight." "I doubt anyone of sound mind and knowledge would think as you do." "You can't handle criticism." (So I assume you were criticizing me for thinking as I do and for some reason, it's okay for you to do it.) "You're too sensitive." "You're making value statements." "It isn't worth engaging with you." Sounds kinda antagonistic to me, but sometimes words get misconstrued. So it could be me.
Well, you seem to be on a mission. It's more helpful if you quote me accurately rather than paraphrase according to your inferences.
 10.
Nah, I think you just can't deal with someone disagreeing with you and showing flaws in your argument. But it's cool. No judgements here.
I haven't made any arguments.
 11.
I never said that. And that's not what the sentence I was referring to implies. And I wasn't making it an argument -- just stating my opinion. It's only when people have a problem with opposing opinions that there's an argument. I have no problem with what anyone else thinks about Zappa. But I will defend a personal attack.
I think you are a rather sensitive person who is happy to make strong statements but can't handle any criticism of them, thinking they are personal attacks, so I doubt it's really worth me engaging with you on here.
 12.
Not being keen doesn't lend weight to my argument? That sentence is contradictory. Anyway, believe it or not, a difference of opinion than yours can still be relevant. Yes, someone can most definitely be talented and overrated. What's so hard to comprehend? I can say that "The Hangover" was a funny movie, but if I were to say it was one of the greatest movies ever made, that would be over rating it. Thus -- the difference. Get it?
Why would you believe I think my opinion is the only relevant one? I don't care what you think about Frank Zappa and his music. You are the one making statements and value judgements about his music, I'm not. I love a lot of his work, I'm not particularly keen on his 'humorous' and 'sexual' music (of which there is not a great deal), I like his more orchestral works with later bands. As to his 'talent', I doubt anyone of sound mind and musical knowledge could doubt that his talent for composition and musical expression was exceptional. 'Overrated'? Overrated for what?
 13.
Yes and yes.
Good stuff. You're obviously not keen, but that does not really lend any weight to your arguments. For instance what do you mean by talented but overrated? That's just purely subjective conjecture.
 14.
True, Zappa was (on occasion) was making social commentary, which was very trendy at the time. (Heck -- "Eve of Destruction" was a top 10 hit. That could never happen today). But in retrospect, it was hardly genius. In fact, even back then I found his humor on the puerile side. I'm not saying this because I dislike Zappa. I think he's talented, just overrated. And I was more impressed by him when i was more impressionable. As I've grown I've come to realize a lot of what gets passed off as "too deep for the casual listener" is really just indulgent nonsense. Sure, you can score a cat walking across a piano and harmonize it for a 12 piece band and it would require a certain amount of skill to execute. But it'll still sound like a cat walking across a piano.
Do you know much about Zappa? Have you heard all periods of his catalogue?
 15. Interviews with loads of the band, it really good! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4Es7opmsMI
 16.
That's British understatement, that's all. We feel no need to state the obvious...
And the Oscar Wilde award for devastating slicing wit goes to ... DAD!!!
 17.
I'm not a fan of Whisky either.... But Drambuie is a different story
Ooh I love Drambuie, especially with a double espresso on the side
 18.
Right, your nicked!
Absolutely! Drinking bourbon when we have a great variety of much nicer and more sophisticated single malt Scotch whiskies is f***ing criminal!
 19. I saw that on some threads! I thought it was a software glitch. Some people are dishonourable cheeky f***ers aren't they
 20. Get over it Are you careful not to wear the frets down by playing it? No. It's a Stingray, not a Ritter, it's a workhorse, workhorses have a few dings if it's being used enough.
 21.
I don't think it is possible to "find your sound" ocassionally you will set up somewhere plug in and think wow that is the sound I have been hunting for since year dot, now move you amp to another room / venue and the same amp / bass will sound a million miles from what you loved in the other room. My favoured set up at the moment is my Little Mark head, Mark Bass 2x10 and, what surprises me most here, my Precision Lyte, that seems to be the closest I have come to my perfect tone, but that tone is only perfect at about 25% of the places I use it, and still then only perfect to me where I am standing. I guess what I am trying to say is that it is probably impossible to achieve your perfect tone everytime but if you can find one you are happy with you perhaps have to trust that most of that sound will still be present at times where you don't feel it is sounding as good
This is why I never use and amp and cab. My tones are created on the POD X3 LIVE at home through my own studio monitors and good headphones, always with band songs on. Those patches go into the PA and I use whatever monitors are available at the gig to have a band mix with a bit extra bass and vocal.
 22.
Fair enough Nige, but that's not really my experience. It's not that I would never roll the treble off, or never move my plucking hand nearer the neck or nearer the bridge, or never boost the mids a little or whatever. It's just that I start from 'plug in and play' and rarely wander far from it. That is 'my sound' or would be if I actually believed in the concept of 'my sound'. It doesn't stop people, in the band or out of it, saying 'great sound' or whatever. I wouldn't know because what I hear on stage is not what everyone else hears anyway. I might be a little more sympathetic to the idea that a particular tone matters to or helps a particular song/arrangement but I still wouldn't see it as a big deal.
Yeah, that's cool, depends on the music dunnit. I find much pleasure in crafting tones, and I often play for hours during and after, I get a kick out of it
 23. Thanks Garry! I like Corinna's tune too. Much appreciated mate
 24.
Having a rare no pressure morning listening to music and I have to say The imagined village is simply the best and most inspiring musical project I've been touched by since my youth. That's all
Great aren't they! Global folk fusion. Delighted you like them so much! I'm privileged to play guitar with Sheema, The IV's sitarist (she's also a bassist), she's putting a solo album out later this year and a few of the IV guys are on it too, I just tracked the guitar for some of it. The Imagined Village are wickid live, I hope you manage to catch a show at some point. I'll pass on your lovely comments http://imaginedvillage.com
 25.
Hi All, A couple of months ago I bought a custom bass guitar strap from Minotaur. The custom options included an up-charge and the total on Pay-Pal was e81.00. I awaited eagerly for it's arrival. It turned up a few weeks later, and I was surprised to find out they had sent me two straps, but one was a thinner guitar strap. Also some of the custom options I requested had not been full-filled, so I contacted them. They asked me to return both of the straps to them for a refund. I sent them back recorded delivery via Royal Mail, scanning the receipts (£11.70) and emailing them to Minotaur. Over a month has gone past and Minotaur are saying they have not received the return, or indeed my email of the receipts, and it has been re-sent a number of times. For the past two weeks my emails have not been responded too. My tracking number is saying the package has been delivered. so I have raised a grievance with Pay-Pal, only to be told that I'm now past 45 days from the original purchase, and I'm out of time. I'm furious. I feel like I've been diddled out of my money and all response from Minotaur has dried up. I know many on BC rate Minotaur, but I've been left with £81.11 worth of bad taste in my mouth BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
Jesus mate, what a total bummer. That's a lot of money and appalling service. I'd considered a Minotaur a few months ago, but I've started using the really nice (but simple) Fender strap I got with my Deluxe Strat a few years ago, it's perfectly fine and I'll be getting another. I really hope this gets sorted for you mate.
