Just for info I have spoken to an engineer at orange technical. Hr tells me that orange now use jj tubes in their amps and the DI issue has been resolved. Took the top off mine yesterday and there were a pair of jj tubes installed. My amp is dated may 12
That's great that they sorted the DI. The USA guys seem to love this amp, and pay a lot for it! I have the 200b and I'm always tempted by one.

I like the bloke...makes him even cooler than he has basses.

What brand are the Emperors new clothes ?
Musicman20 replied to Black Coffee's topic in Bass Guitars
I think the whole guitar/bass market is currently VERY focussed on classic designs, such as the Precision and Les Paul. I am aware there has always been a massive market for them, no matter what, but I remember a time only 15-16 years ago when it was quite different in the guitar shops. Especially with basses. Nowhere near as many 'classic' style basses, and EBMM basses were quite rare! -
Having just spent half a day agonising over whether to buy one, 'stunning' is right.
Don't get me wrong, I think Sheldon is not only a skilled luthier/instrument designer/etc, but he is also an artist with some of those designs. But, I don't have any need for the fanned fret system, as much as I realise it may have benefits. -
Stingray 2EQ vs 3EQ - why the big price difference?
Musicman20 replied to BassYerbouti's topic in Bass Guitars
As noted, the 133 series come without a proper hardcase, which is about £100 ish to buy. Also, they are in limited colours. I don't 'do' black basses or guitars so that rules that out for me, and the blue and red aren't my favourite. They are the same as buying a 3 EQ Ray. If you buy a 3EQ Ray, the upcharge for the extra mid control is about £60-70. 2EQs sound great, no doubt about it. There is some argument that the bass is set to a better, more controllable level on the 3EQ, (the low end on the 2EQ, if cranked, eats a lot of amp power and puts your cab through its paces!) but the tone is virtually the same. I used to love a scooped EQ, but now I must have my mids, and the mid control is perfect for that. Don't rule out the double pup Stingrays; the bridge pickup sounds identical! -
I believe that if a company want to price themselves in the big boys league they MUST have a QC and a product range that follows. For the same price there's A LOT of great and more consistent quality gear on the market.
I have to agree. Sorry to Warwick fans. -
i've just bought this '76 p bass but i need your help!

It's GuitarGuitar, poor descriptions as usual. I'd use your 7 day return policy. -

agreeing a sale on ebay before the auction ends
Musicman20 replied to PaulWarning's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I have done this when buying off ebay, and it saved myself and the seller money. We agreed a much better price. I won't use ebay in the future because it is too expensive to use. Not only that, people want to buy things for £0.99 all the time, and there is just no point in selling stuff for that price. May as well bin it and go to work. -
Calling all GB Streamliner & BF Super Twelve users!
Musicman20 replied to thebrig's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi there! I do not have a BF cab, sorry, but I do have a Streamliner 900. My persepctive of the Streamliner is this - its a very classic bass tone, lots of rich low end, and a fanstastic treble control, (I don't play much slap but when I did with this amp the top end was perfect). The mids are slightly scooped, (as is the same with a lot of amps eg GK) when everything is a 12. Roll the bass back a smidge, and boost the mids to 1/2, and you are pretty much at flat. But, it doesn't really matter with this amp where you put the controls, especially the mids and treble, as it sounds nice even at extremes. Am I right in thinking that the Super Twelve has a fair bit of mid punch as it is? If so, it should ying yang well with this amp. I used the Streamliner 900 with a 5 string Ray HS for this first time last night, and the B sounded stunning. Clear, thick, punchy, and balanced. No mud. I did have the bass at 12, and the mids boosted on the middle setting to about 2. The onboard EQ was all at 12...no boost or cut. I was tempted to try something new and sell the Streamliner, but then I realised how good it sounds, how great it looks, the low weight, and the excellent DI/headphone/aux in, etc. It is a total hammer of a head. As they say on the marketing, it actually does sound like a high end studio pre. -
I tried a Sandberg California yesterday. It reminded me of a 5 string Trace Elliot T Bass I once owned. Beautifully built, awful to play... 30 seconds later and it was back on the stand. I was gutted, it looked fantastic. On the up side my GAS is cured.
Got to agree that the first time I tried one (unplugged) it didn't feel right... -

Dingwall? I actually think they make stunning instruments so I'm being tongue in cheek. -
Just an update, turned it on this morning and there was a high pitched hum/ring which I hadn't noticed before - if I did I don't remember but I was worried it was caused by the damage so rang dawsons and they are picking it up and sending me a replacement. No questions asked and I get to keep the bass big muff!
Class!

What is the best socket tester for metal?
-
I think saying that Fender 5 strings are very unpopular and poor is out of date. Their latest models are fantastic. I don't own one, so I have no dog in this fight! I don't like buying second hand that much either. Sometimes it doesn't work out buying second hand. The best way is to test test test, then if you are decided, save and order.

The problem is, budget 5 string basses can put you off the whole idea of a 5 string. It did with me for 10 years or more! (Tanglewood 5 string back in the day....awful).
Why do need all them musicman basses Gareth?
Dunno haha. I don't collect much apart from gear, and I spend the rest on clothes. I don't have a car now (and won't until I live outside the city centre) so I'm just careful with money and buy ace stuff. My girlfriend encourages it.
Cheers for that, it really helps Sound and look and balance of a musician, but there's just something about the ergonomics of the neck which i need to try out again. I think a jazz neck is the only one that would ever really suit me
No problem! All the Musicman 5er necks are virtually the same (apart from wood differences, paint, board material etc) but the spacing is tighter than most 5 string basses...so this might helps as its more 'Jazz' like. It depends if you like the profile though.

In my experience of going into 5 string territory (it took me a LONG time to make the jump as I wanted to get the right bass) it is always best to try them out, but realise also that your hands and muscle memory will adjust once you've had it, no matter what the spacing/scale. A few things I found out are below, but this is just what I found: 35" scale = better B? FALSE. Any well constucted 5 string bass can have a good B string. It ISN'T just about the B...its about balance. I tried 6 or more Lakland 35" Skyline basses and not only did I start disliking the B, I disliked the high weight and the poor QC for a pretty expensive bass. I also found the D and G strings didn't have the presence to match the huge B tone. Fender - good at 5 string basses? I tried a normal passive American Precision the other day, and it was a 5 string. Lovely bass, and well worth the money. The B blended nicely with the other strings. It wasn't perfect, but its good for what it is! Fender Deluxe (2010 ish onward) 5 string basses? Never played one, sorry, but the aesthestics are great. It's great that there is a passive/active switch but I'm not sure I'd bond with the pre-amp and noiseless pups. I need to try one. Musicman 5 string basses. I'm biased, because I LOVE the Musicman Stingray and I have since I first saw one back when I was learning. I always said to myself 'if I get a 5 string it'll be a Ray 5'. I spent about 18 months faffing with Laklands, trying all sorts of basses, trying to find the 'one'. What did I go back to? Musicman Stingray 5, and I ordered a HS. It is beautiful, lightweight, well made, great pre-amp, fantastic electronics, great spacing (I can almost slap on it now...getting there) and a timeless tone. There is a reason why these basses are almost an industry standard 5 string, (more so in the 90s). This led me to love the Musicman 5 string package, and now I have 3 with another on the way. Musicman designed it as a totally new bass, not just a Stingray with an extra string. Those pickups are great for a well balanced tone, and a nice tight punchy B string. Made in the USA, great after service, good quality hardshell case. They used to be about £1400 so if you shop around you could get a bargain. If you are really daring, try a Bongo. Its all quite a personal thing...you need to bond with it.

Guitar guitar? I've had similar experiences with them. -
It's a Fullerton RI. Fender were at the top of their game around this time, and that's why they command good money. Yep, the price is on the high side but if someone wants one, they'll pay it.
Agreed. Just because we are very strict on slightly higher prices on basschat, doesn't mean the rest of the bass/guitar buying world is. I don't think the saying 'its worth what someone will pay for it' applies to a quality instrument. Its worth whatever the seller WANTS it to be worth, and if people can't stretch to it, they don't get it! Simple as.
That's interesting - what makes you prefer the Baer Ml112 over the Vanderkley? I really need to use lightweight gear but I haven't heard either. How does the Baer 112 sound? Frank.
Ah. Only going on tone profile reviews I'm afraid and what Baer state is their tone goal with the ML112.
