1.
I've got a GK mb800 paired with barefaced cabs, I'm really enjoying mine too. Glad you like your new one 10! Enjoy that glorious tone.
Me 3, although a Gen 2 Compact. Great sounding and monstrously loud. I did put my GK through a fridge the last gig that we played and that was something else. Got me thinking as I think that I know someone who's going to be selling a Six 10 at some point....
2.
My punk band played at a small venue in London, the first band came on, no one watching except our band and a couple of their mates, that band immediately leaves. The organisers band come on, about 25 of their mates show up and promptly also leave, giving us an audience of about 5 people for our show. What the hell is wrong with people? I mean, who goes to a gig to just watch one band?
Welcome to playing gigs in London! But yes, it really does suck. I'm pretty sure that this sort of thing is getting worse too. If I'm playing a gig then I try to see at least some of the other acts play, and ditto if I'm just there to see the show. Then again I'm old and kinda a bit more traditional about things.
3. Very tempted. I don't own a 4-string, and the full Stingray electronics at this price is pretty rare!
4. Good fun, but pretty chaotic.... Singer & drummer get lost in car on way to venue, so they were obviously happy when they arrived to find that the promoter had cut our set time to 20 minutes (!!!) after having added 2 bands to the bill. It also would have helped if the drummer hadn't gotten drunk and decided to monumentally screw up the 1st part of our last song. But overall the gig went well. We were a bit of an outlier on the bill (we're proggy-slugy-kinda-Melvins influenced, vs the more punky/indie other acts) but the folks who were there seemed to dig it. I also had the joy of putting my MB800 through a nice new Ampeg 8x10. The soundman took it in good spirits but apparently guitar leads weren't as prominent as maybe they should have been... Ahem... Oh well, never mind! I also drank a lot of Guinness and woke up today feeling fine. Winner all round!
5. Have done the soundcheck-at-3:30pm-for-set-at-10:30pm thing a few times. The good thing is getting a soundcheck, as you're often lucky to get one speaking as someone who's played disorganized metal shows in London for a good length of time. The bad thing is then staying sober until you're on stage because the whole process is so boring!
6. Pretty much the limit of our singer's interaction with the audience* is for him to say "bag of d***s" at some point between songs. Well, he is an Aussie, and I'd probably say that it's a fair introduction for the various, ahem, members of the band! * An exaggeration, but not by much.
7. Sounds like a nightmare. One thing that's a problem is that, by the sounds of it, he either owns or administers your site + page. Before giving him the Spanish Archer's I'd make sure that he no longer has access to those! I speak as a long-time IT jockey, who in a previous job was asked more than once to revoke user accounts while said user was in with HR while getting the boot for disciplinary reasons...
8. I play in drop C (CGCFA) with my band. I originally tried playing in standard-5-string-bass-but-tuned-up-a-semitone but the transposing was a total nightmare, especially open-string based lines. Oh, and learning by watching/showing the guitarists riffs didn't work too well. For strings I use a 130 for the low C and then a 90 or 95 4-string set for the others. Tension's reasonably high but nothing neck breaking! One thing to note is that it's really gnarly sounding with the Stingray electronics.
9. I play a 5-string in drop C, so I'm tuned CGCFA to match the guitars. Originally a guitarist too, though played a lot on 7s tuned to BEADGBE. I also own an 8-string with a low F# or dropped E.
10.
All well and good and I broadly agree, but everyone has to make a big effort to learn the material to the point where it can be played back to front, upside down and on one leg while facing east - underwater. What I mean is, without having to think about it or look at your fretboard. Otherwise any, er... 'stagecraft' is likely to compromise the quality of the performance.
Agreed. Being able to play the material while doing your on-stage antics was unstated - don't do backflips if you can't play while doing so. I do spend some time looking at the FB myself - I am no way perfect, believe me - but try to keep animated at the same time.
11. I don't so much have "Resting Bitch Face" as "Resting Incipient Axe-murderer Face".
I used to do amateur theatre stuff and remember that I knew when my expressions were right if the felt exaggerated and forced. If you feel as if you are grinning like an idiot on stage, then you have got it about right.
Ding ding ding, this is the winner! When you're on stage you are putting on an act while playing a gig. Aim for a bigger/louder version of yourself as people watching will generally respond much better to you if you're visibly enthusiastic. I'm gently trying to get our guitarists to be more open as well, as they look like miserable b*ggers "au naturel" like myself! YMMV. There may be live situations where this isn't the best approach, but for playing original material in club-sized venues enthusiasm really is infectious.
12. I don't mind "Walking on Sunshine" as I have many vague memories of drunkenly dancing to it as a student. That Rembrandt's song needs to be bombed from space. I loathe "Friends" and everything to do with it, so it's damned by association as well as being really sodding annoying!
13. Played a low-key show at a rehearsal studio on Saturday. Not a huge turnout, mainly musicians, but set went down well and had several folks comment positively on the bass tone. Guitars & bass weren't put through the PA, my EBMM Sub5 + MB800 + Barefaced Compact combination really fills out a room nicely. I wouldn't have considered any of these without reading Basschat, so please give yourselves a collective round of applause!
14. Only thing with the MB800 is that the fans can get very noisy when you run it at higher volumes (although that's not really a suprise as it's throwing a lot of heat out). My band rehearses loud and it's noticeable when we break. EDIT: Profile pic now picked Barefaced & GK up with one finger!
15. GK MB800 into a Gen 2 Barefaced Compact 1x15. I can pick the rig up with one finger! Very clean and insanely loud - keeps up with Orange + 2x12 & Engl + 4x12. Works great in a band context if you want to cut through, but isn't the warmest of tones. The 10s are more organic/traditional in character.
16. A, but I've never claimed to be in any way musically educated!
17.
5 string Stingrays, I have one, I just wish it had the 4 string body. Fancy tops, coffee tables, Rickenbackers. All of the above can be improved with a Tort scratch plate, I would have a tort kitchen counter, and a tort dashboard in my car if I had a choice, but then I'd need a sunburst car and Olympic white kitchen cabinets.......
Yeah, I have a Sub 5, really want a Stingray 5, HATE the scratchplate!
18. Sunn O))) Even with earplugs the volume, and insane amount of sub-bass, was making people throw up. Definitely an experience. EDIT:
19. Stable door/missing horse situation for me. I ruined my ears in the 90s before I knew better. For all rehearsals/clubs/gigs/anything with raised volume levels I use disposable Moldex 35db plugs. They don't block all frequencies equally but as I'm used to how they work that doesn't bother me!
20. I've used Snark and Planet Waves ones. Snark tracks 5 string bass a lot better than the PW, but is more obtrusive and uglier!
21. 7/10 Didn't know the Sabbath, Judas Priest, or the Slipknot questions. Guessed the BMTH one. Only recognised the Avenged one due to guitarist's signature guitar...
22.
thanks!!! What application do I run this with? It says it might damage my computer
A DAW or anything that can host VSTs.. .can't think of any host software to recommend off the top of my head. Not sure that you can actually damage your computer, but be aware that you can output potentially speaker-knackering frequencies with synths & synth software!
23. I got a good deal on an Akai Q49, the 4 octave one. It doesn't have any additional pads/controls and the keys don't feel too bad. Then again I'm a bit of a Luddite and any extra controls that I need to map confuses me! EDIT: It's not as nice at the keybed on my Moog Sub 37 though... that feels looovely.
24. Mainly pick with a bit of fingers. I don't make any changes.
25.
A bad workman always blames his tools. Sounds like you need to move on. Life's too short to play in sh*t bands.
I'd rather put it as life's too short to be in a band with d**kheads. Unless it's paying the rent, that is!
