No lust in Jazz

The Sex Pistols could play - no doubt about it.. There's a programme on BBC IPlayer at the moment called something like 'Christmas '77 with the Sex Pistols' which bears this out, but is worth watching anyway as a taste of how different 1977 Britain was.

I count a lot and as I'm self taught, I'm not sure where this comes from, however, when I was younger we used to listen to a lot of stuff that featured odd time signatures and counting was essential if we were going to attempt to play any of this stuff. That said, I find counting especially useful when playing music that I find uninspiring to play - e.g. most interpretations of the Blues - it stops me getting lost when the next miserable solo comes along. Translating this to Sheet Music I do look at the read the rhythm before playing, but this is where it often goes wonky - but I'm not trying to earn a living playing / reading music. One thing that I learned early on, is that music has a mathematic base and I often bear this in mind when I hear the phrase 'you just have to feel it' - music will always work break down into manageable countable elements some how and I don't like guessing.

Yes there is a massive disconnect between what I listen to and what our band plays.The band exists in two very distinct forms - functions (well paid - usual suspects in terms of material) and pubs (less well paid) - all kinds of stuff ABBA to Zappa) my main aim in the band is to have fun and entertain people - I listen to music that offers me something different - hard to explain, but it occupies a different place and I don't anticipate my taste being interesting to others..

When I wanted to ask a question, I called them and said something like 'Hi can I speak to Adrian?' He was straight on the phone and answered my questions - he couldn't have been more helpful..

[/quote] Personally I feel that it is a strength of the programme that Albanian Folk gets a berth alongside other more 'mainstream' acts; I'd agree that Later can be inconsistent, but thinking back to the Tube and OGWT those programmes were also inconsistent, for me where the Tube scored highly was - at least for a time, there was a sense of spontaneity. The OGWT was before my time, but for every classic clip shown, I'd venture that there was plenty best forgotten..

Can you manage Acne or a shell suit? - failing this clothes that don't fit.

When a guitarist left us earlier in the year I suggested that we didn't replace him so equal best buy was a second hand Roland Fantom X6 to be operated by a vocalist and SPD SX Sampling pad for the drummer - both have added a lot to our band.

That sounds great - are you playing it with a pick in that example?

IMV The Later programme is a gem - its great, it gives you a sampler of the bands on the main show over 30 mins. I don't like it all, but I'm quite happy to give the artists - particularly those that I haven't heard before a chance - this series each show, I've found something that I like. Where I struggle is the older artists - who have had their careers and don't need the exposure, that and Jools Holland playing piano

I don't see it as De Geir 'improving' the Thunderbird - I liked my Gibson, but with this I can tweak the bits that I would have done differently - tweaks are personal not factual so I don't really see it as 'improved'. I saw a video of Sander discussing his approach to building basses - I believe that he only built 'fender derivatives' to order and this business went hyperbolic when Richard Bona bought one.

The first time in years I've been watching a series - reminds me of how Top of the Pops used to be - I spend a long time waiting for something interesting to come along.

Musicman Stingray - I'll happily acknowledge that this is a classic instrument - I couldn't get on with the two that I owned. Musicman Bongo - Undaunted I tried a Bongo - Nope Warwick Streamer - It felt like it was fighting me every time that I picked it up - I'm often tempted by the classifieds

Spector make awesome SS Basses - I have a CTB - it is a wonderful instrument. For the P bass sound - the Mexican Mustang PJ is a great instrument although I'm not wild about the 'J' PU (this is a personal taste thing across all PJ instruments) To my surprise I've found that I don't have issues switching from 30" to 34" scale. Others have said it, but there aren't any real downsides.

As I mainly play with a pick, for me, 'slap' is just another technique that has its uses, like finger style - I'd consider it poor form to 'chump it' when needed (see Bruno Mars) that said, If it didn't appear in mainstream dance music from time to time wouldn't bother. I once spent a pathetic amount of time trying Bernard Edwards chucking technique - because I wanted to. I spend a of time trying to play solo chord / melody stuff on my bass, but I've earned more money being able to play slap and its variants (this felt like a cogent point when I typed it - not sure that it is) If I played double bass I guess that I'd need to have that technique rockabilly slap to a performance standard I avoid 'slap demo videos' with a passion.

Slap bass - I have no problem with it, mind I don't listen to music that features it. I have a well paid gig later this month, the set features some dance music - the odd bit of slap is required here and there - I just get on with it and hope everyone enjoys their night. If that wasn't left field enough I play much of the rest of the set with a pick
