1. ^ From the YT video description.. "Just fitted Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounds pickups and a Fender Hi-mass bridge to my Squier VM 5 P-Bass. Strung it with flat wounds.."
2. The whole thread saw we 90% though an electrical guitar order form earlier in the week. This didn't help.. http://youtu.be/K6G_hugwG0E
3. If its any help I saw this before I bought my bass. http://youtu.be/fElWdfX8uV8
4. Just to add - Michele is a great guy to deal with.
5. I must have been lucky with my Squier VM P5 or possibly you were unlucky - I find the stock PU great and I'm the kind of tart that would change stuff out in a heartbeat.
6.
Cardiacs
Hell Yeah
7. I go through phases with flats, live in a band context they're great, when playing at home playing solo (so to speak) I find that they're less great. But I'll take your recommendation and next time I'm in that market, I'll try them.
8. Huge fan of the band - this live line up in particular and this number. http://youtu.be/51IZG6Ryeis
9.
Did I forget to mention that the glass panel lights up green or purple depending on what channel you're using!
Like this?
10.
....its peoples differences that make it interesting. ..
Yes, agreed.
Everything from Glen Cornick, JJ Burnel to Chris Squire. Imagine if there sound guys had simply dialed there unique sounds out and made them generic bass tones live, cos it was easier.
Yes, I've imagined this, but what I saw in my imagination was this... I imagined that the sound men for these bands were hired employees and I've also imagined they had their share of cruddy venues with objectionable acoustics to contend with and I've imagined that they will have mixed the bass to replicate the music as per bands requirements to the best of their abilities; taking into account the what they were faced with when they showed up and unpacked the PA - yes I've imagined this - it took a while. Good luck with your 'unique' sound, I wish you well.
11.
Probably about the tenth time I've thought about withdrawing the advert' Sounds like you need some more photos!
Honestly I don't...
12.
.....................bassists spend lots of time and money to get just the sound they want. Just the right bass, strings, amp, cabs, speakers and pedals to produce there unique sound......
Unless you are a soloist, much of your sonic ideals will have to compete with, drums, guitars, keys and anything else that is in your band, I really want to be part of the music that the band makes, rather than cut through it; on stage this starts with me hearing myself - the rest is down to the sound man who is mixing the music - not just the bass.
.....Why not save a fortune and buy a P Bass, a pre amp and in ears, cos thats what the FOH will make your top range kit sound like anyway?..
Well a P Bass may not be for everyone, but its a good point.
13. We use the same sound crew for all of our gigs, I use quality gear and I'll send them a DI signal from (usually) a Fender derived bass (usually) played with a plectrum - if the soundman can't mix this for the overall good of the music, then he's the wrong man for us. It's pointless me being hung up on my own onstage tone when playing live or indeed rehearsing as I use earplugs
14. Probably the tenth time that I've navigated to this advert - I keep telling myself that this isn't for me, it really isn't..
15. it's odd, the search for 'tone' takes us bass players into some often expensive experiments. The tone on isolated bass tracks often shows that what works for the music isn't necessarily a great solo tone. Personally I send the DI from a pedal to FOH, use a small combo as a monitor to hear myself - thus I can adjust frequencies to suit what I need to hear and I let the soundman adjust the pedal output to suit FOH band requirements.
16. Creation audio - Grizzly Bass creates the kind of sounds that you describe.
17. I've got an Xotic Chuck Rainey Sig P/J its a fantastic instrument - but I don't use the J pickup. I have not so great memories of having a Yamaha BB1200 routed and fitted with a J pick-up - on reflection, this was a waste of time that I wouldn't repeat on another bass
18. I rate the pick up in that bass along side the Aguilar, Fender and Xotic pick ups in the other basses that I own, buying the Squire with a view to changing the PU - I haven't needed to. We're all different though, I'd be interested in how you get on.
19. Uptown funk was a recent hit in recent years does that qualify I don't see anything wrong with a reviewer saying ".. and here's the slap sound" just not all the time - The sound of a solo bass being reviewed is a little skewed tbh, most of us play in bands with others so for me the purity of tone is lost in the band context.
20. Often I think this is down to ego, some 'reviewers' like to show off their 'chops' and slap (while a valid form of playing), is an easier vehicle to do this; easier than, say entertaining someone for the duration of the review using more core techniques - e.g. playing solo Jamerson lines with any degree of accuracy Not all reviews feature slap solos as a statement of tone - See Dan Veal's (Aka Dood) reviews - there is another way.
