1. I agree that the F500 is a good amp, but its a little big to be called a micro - I'd be interested in a revised version... The title of this thread "definately" (sic) has to be a wind up, both TC and Markbass have a wide range of products to suit all tastes and styles, both are innovative and have their place, but one better than another - really?
2.
This is just me, but now I wouldn't go back to Markbass. I think they really had a good grasp on things, and they should have just made a LM4 by now, and upgraded the F500. I'm not as interested in their new products.
I went back to Markbass, buying a 2nd hand LM3 after briefly owning a Boogie Prodigy. I'm very happy with it too. However, I do find new products from Markbass uninspiring. IME, in the cold light of day, once you take the vaguries of technique, pedals, strings, pickup selection, active electronics, other musicians notably guitarists, drummers and keys, different cabs, venue characteristics and the capablities of the FOH / PA operator. Many of the nuances often discussed in threads on amps can become so confused they become pointless. Possibly to my own detriment. I tend to send a pre eq singal to the board and self monitor usually by boosting the mids so I can hear what I'm doing. Although I understand someone changing their rig and tinkering give me a few months and that itch will start again - lol.
3. I had a Prodigy, after two gigs and three rehearsals the honeymoon period was short lived. I was disappointed with it and for the thick end of £2000, it went back. My walkabout is a superb piece of gear and on this basis I bought one. However, In my experience.. Tonally it was one dimensional and lacked the authority that I'd expected. I didn't like the EQ. (I felt) Transporting it required the care and attention befitting 'Hannibal Lecter' I like Boogie gear, but not this and I've since moved on. Noting the increased power and graphic EQ I suspect the Strategy is a better head.
4. I bought a P bass from Neil - great bass, as described - I would have no hesitation in dealing with him in the future.
5.
I got mine at www.bassgear.co.uk. Great guys and great service.
Thank you
6. I really like the look of this amp - where would I get one?
7.
Is that all factual or just what you assume? I myself can't imagine millionaire rock stars using crap gear because they don't have to endure the sound of it.
Just because they wear Jeans, have tattoos, play benefit gigs and attend Neslson Mandela's funeral dosen't automatically mean that they're not business wise or have integity. A musician with a mahoosive unnessary branded backline is essentially advertising to the many many thousands of people who attend their concerts buy the DVD's and watch on mobile phone content on Youtube; touring is expensive and someone has to fund it. BTW The above isn't intended as a pop at anyone - just a reality.
8. I think as a working Bass Player this area is one where 10 or 12" speakers are handy for mid range punch, remember what you're hearing isn't what the audience hear, but if there are monitors available I'd use them rather than a speaker cab this way you can hear a little of whatever you like. Again noting from real world examples Geddy Lee hasn't used onstage cabs for a number of tours. The only other thing that I'd add is, if possible use a good PA company; we try to use the same people gig after gig. A soundman plus rig to take care of the FOH sound is worth it and is often what gets you repeat gigs and recommendations.
9. Yes I recognise this. There are a package of issues going on when playing live, such as Ironside1966 points out, also when playing live people put more into their instrument, drummers get busier, keyboard players and guitarists occupy all conceivable free space then the vocal monitors are turned up and your onstage bass sound has little chance. Make sure that you're going pre eq into the desk and boost the mids until you can hear yourself and have a word with the soundman to see if he can offer you a monitor.
10. If belting out disco / funk music through a PA at a party event, so long as I have a reasonable Bass tone I don't worry about nuances, if I were playing a quiet jazz type gig – I would. I’d sum it up like this. The bass player with Queens of the Stone Age who uses many esoteric vintage brands of amp when recording, is often seen livewith TC electronic gear, he’s not short of people to transport and maintain the valve gear, but I guess because it travels better than the other stuff and the tone isn’t too far removed from what the QoTSA want that he uses it.
11.
In my search for a lightweight combo (see the Markbass thread) I've been investigating the TC Electronic BG250 series. All of them push out 250w through their own speakers, no cabs needed, and theyre both light and dirt cheap. Naturally I'm interested. I'm particularly fascinated with the BG250 208 which has two 8" speaker, leading me onto the topic at hand:
Hi, you might want to confirm this - it was pointed out to me at Bass Direct that the 2 x 8" combo requires an extension cabs for its full 250W.
12. I've always liked the sound of plectrum with a Bass, the work of Andy West, Booby Vega and Scott Thunes has been an influence on my own playing. I've never quite understood why when a plectrum is used on a bass it is nearly exclusively used to showcase the the 'Punky Growl' of an amp etc.. for example see the Mesa Boogie Prodigy demo videos. There's so much more that can be done.
