1. If you have a J. P, or 'Ray and if you are struggling in your band, its unlikely to be the Bass that's presenting a problem.
2. Having 'researched' the Jackson Browne live seam on YouTube following the excellent Glasto performance - thanks JTUK, I note that the Bass player does have a Stingray on stage (fretless I think)
3.
Tried a Spector yet? Thhhpppp!! *Runs away*
No, but I like the look of the new US Helium basses. (just sayin')
4.
That is my finding, at my haloween gig I could hear myself louder from the onstage sub and our log burner monitor than my own amp (its behind my upright), it sounded great too especially with the DB! I could have left my cab at home and just used the di out off my shuttlemax head or even just used my Behringer BDI21 box.
I respect a man who can carry off the flat cap / 5 string combination.
5.
... but sorry, a single 112 is very unlikely to be it...
That said, I have used a Walkabout 12 on and off for the past six years and I have never had an issue with hearing myself on stage, this combo has covered a whole range of gigs from garden parties and wedding functions through to sizeable beer and blues festivals without issue. The wider point that comes from threads that I read on here regarding gear, is that as bass players we're very good at seeking great tone, which often take the form of 'cab voicing' debates, or competing and cutting through the mix against busy drummers and guitarists which lead to more powerful gear or larger speaker area debates, but for me it’s the overall contribution to the music that matters the most and I'll settle for hearing the notes that I'm playing with the band If I want a great tone this is best delivered by the Walkabout into a 1x15” – I wouldn’t gig this though, as the nuances and timbres would be lost in the mix and render it pointless. I don't see any rights or wrongs in this thread, but if you want to carry big amps and cabs, go for it.
6. No - I don't miss a heavy rig, currently its a Jule valve preamp the into desk, on stage monitoring via Walkabout 12; if I want to get sexy I put the Walkabout into a Berg NV115 at 2.66 ohms all of which sits on the back seat of a Golf. Edit: Added detail
7. The one thing that stops we lusting after and buying a Coppolo P Bass is the look of the headstock, which really doesn't work for my eyes.
8.
If your not selfish with your tone (and the basslines you want to play) then you will be walked all over and you'll end up playing roots with a dull thudy tone just like everyone else...
I've been listening to the isolated bass track thread and dull thuddy tone describes the bass contribution to some very fine pieces of music.
9. What's more important with material for me, is how and when we play it, rather than what songs we actually play. We have everything from ABBA to Zappa in our set(s) and pay a lot of attention to detail in learning the material, no guessed bits, shoddy vocals or noodling solo parts. We have found sets follow a certain pattern, so there's something for people to sit drink and listen to plus get their ears accustomed to live music and so long as it’s well-rehearsed and professionally delivered as possible (we're not Pros) it works, as the evening moves on we introduce some dance material and as alcohol takes effect people dance. We're not precious about material and at the moment are rehearsing a Christmas gig with the intention to play 'that lot' - Slade, Wizzard, The Waitresses, Mariah....
10.
I love the idea of a "Blues Foundation" video that starts with advanced chordal work and double-stopping at the 15th fret. If that's a "Foundation", God help anyone who wants to get all advanced on his ass.
Just laughed so hard I nearly choked on my tea
11. Within 'the blues' there are still many many 'Sex on fire' moments, perhaps too many, so before you bin the whole rock covers 'oeuvre' you may wish to re-consider the 50 years or so of rock orientated music - what I'm saying here is there's an awful lot of material to get fed up with. I look upon 'the blues' like this, unless you're in the wrong band, there are no rules that say play this like this or that like that. A couple of Bass players that I enjoy are Scott Thunes when he worked with Zappa and Roscoe Beck primarily for his hair in this video, but also to demonstrate the world beyond single position root, third, fifth nonsense. There's no difference between a 'cover' and a 'standard', its just music to be enjoyed (or not)
12.
I bet you wouldn't get certain gigs without one... as nothing sits like a P.
Which gigs were you thinking of?
13. I have both and I play between either of these or a Jazz on a rotational cycle of around 6-8 months or so, there's no science behind this, they're all classics and if there are issues with the sound, its clearly going to be me that's the problem.
14. Bergantino NV115 is my recommended cab, in that I own one, use one and like it. If playing larger venues we would use a PA, so I'd more than likely monitor myself with a 1x12 combo or similar. In your situation I'd go to Bass Direct or Bass Gear and try a few out, some guys on here did this recently and reported back
15. We've had it in the Xmas set for the past couple of years, as a jam the line is one thing, in a band context its demanding, for us, the difficulty was getting the interplay of the bass and vocals to sound authentic. Live its a nightmare to monitor, I'd surprised if the dots will help. Pretty cool when it comes off though.
16. This was my first Rush tour, vast tracts of 2112, Hemispheres, Farewell to Kings and Moving Pictures - pretty astonishing stuff.
17. Nice playing and nice idea for a thread. I have no clue which bass is which; add to this the vagaries of technique, strings, different amps and cabs, EQ settings, room acoustics other instruments and there's a strong case for a sub £200 gigging bass Thanks for sharing.
18. I've met Scott Thunes on a couple of occasions - once before a Zappa gig where he was lovely, slightly pre occupied, but approachable and polite, second time after a Dwezill gig and he was really relaxed and chatty. I met Jim Smith from the Cardiacs, when they supported 'it bites' talked to him for a long while about influences, gear, touring etc - really nice guy, in fact all of the band were.
19.
how precisely is it different to a standard precision (ignoring cosmetic considerations) ? I'm honestly curious
20. Huge fan of Kate Bush. There are a few reasons that I didn't seek a ticket, but the number one was, she never struck me as a live artist - her art came from the studio.
21. Isn't the contradiction between Blues covers / standards and jamming - jamming being one thing and playing a cover of a well known Blues number another, I get into debates with our piano player when he searches mid number, for 'that' chord inversion and he tells me that he's just jamming. I ask him, 'are we playing a song or jamming? Because, if we're jamming then there's no way that I'm going to play this often repeated pattern and make a 'bed' for him or someone else to play without similar discipline. There's a lot of great stuff to learn in playing Blues and just about any technique fits - I'd ask your jam band for a list, their list is bound to be full of embellished parts that perhaps shouldn't be there.
22. Chorus pedals and Bass are a sound that I really dislike, I realise that this doesn't help your quest.
23. Thanks for sharing, hope you enjoy the amp, in the right rig and right hands I'm sure that it will be monsterous.
24.
I was super sceptical about even being able to hear anything between the Minnie and a Tone Hammer power stage but it was quite clearly audible (helps that we had an amazing player, with a much better ear than I, to work with too!).
I own a Demter Minnie 800D - I've done the same A/B thing through a LM3 power stage. Ok there is a difference (perhaps A/B Power vs Class D), but its a difference that I wouldn't worry about, TBH it could be a difference that you actually prefer, but by the time you've played with a little more effort 'cos its live' or had to accomodate a guitarist, drummer and keyboards, EQ'ed you tone, changed between plectrum and or fingers the differences will be lost. I use mine with a Pre amp - but I'd have the Demeter VTBP-M-800D (with DI) in a heartbeat
25. Boogie Walkabout Head - the head that the Mesa Prodigy Four:88 would like to be, but isn't.
