1. To me, if you are playing in a band you have to sit in the mix; saying that, there is also the being heard issue, the having a decent onstage sound so that you enjoy playing issue. This is currently a work in progress, after listening to my 'gorgeous tone' out front thanks to a wireless transmitter and listening to the abject chaos of the onstage sound at the same gig.
2. I can't see us doing a gig of any note without PA support. Our PA contractor has class D active cabs - so for all of the guts, heft and weight I have in the Walkabout power section the audience are still hearing a Class D amp.
3. I'm no fan of FATM - so avoided her Glasto performance - friends of mine who like her stuff thought that she did well. That said, I'd much sooner see / hear someone having a go in delivering their 'Art' than playing it safe.
4. I went between 1987 and 1994 even having my honeymoon there in 1993 When I first went it was easy going - Two Stages and a lot of people being daft, when I went it wasn't for the music the music was just part of it. At some point the fence went up and for me (understanding the reasons for the fence - the locals (the same locals who would charge £5 for a hot shower)) it lost its attraction. Once it got on TV forget it..
5. Post #2 +1 Mesa Walkabout - I've spent a lot of cash and had a lot of fun finding out through buying lots of the 'other stuff'. In my opinion, the WA is the class leader here
6. IMark Ronson would have been a better call to replace the Foo Fighters.
7. Music is Music. I like the sound of a double bass played well, in fact I like any instrument played well. There are people who like their music well and truly elitst and in my experience they like 'Jam nights' to be their own domain. So if you want to play and sound like other people playing the same old tired covers of miserable old claptrap, go ahead try and fit in - its unlikely that you will or you can concentrate on music with your chosen instrument played in your way and create your own art that still obeys the rules of harmony and enjoy yourself.
8.
That's my setup - what gauge strings are you using?
The bottom four of a five string set - explained above
9. Yes, Fender P tuned to drop C.
10. I just take one bass and some spare strings. The most impressive string change I saw: Scott Thunes when playing with Dweezil in the early 90's - he had a roadie change a broken string while still playing - possibly staged but cool as all hell.
11. We have been playing around with a song and now for the sake of the vocals it needs to drop a whole tone. We're sticking with it as we have done a lot of work on the arrangement - but I agree it can sap the piss out of the whole process. I take the view that I'll make the best of it as a bass part and endeavor to deliver it as professionally as I can. I'm not a fan of the whole 'it i'll be alright' concept.
12.
1989 came out last year...
Thanks, I stand corrected... Having read through the 'News' at lunchtime it wouldn't surprise if the whole episode has been fabricated to the benefit of both parties. Swift - She has some old toss out, which now has been discussed in the News. Apple - They're 'right on' and care.
13. More from John Barry http://youtu.be/LfjL9uX2leg
14. Back in the days of doing our own PA - we'd get trusted friends to advise us, we'd adjust PA and playing volumes accordingly - surely everyone does this? I think that at least one of the band has to have some interest in PA and live sound so that at least vocals are clear without ringing or feedback and the general physics are obeyed. We now pay a soundman for all gigs, This doesn't explain a Foo Fighters gig at the MEN a few years ago where they had the gear, the crew, the attitude and the poorest live sound that I've ever come across.
15. I think that the name was chosen for the F'nar factor given that the company trade under the rather industrial (IMV) name Tecamp. I do like the idea of a low volume gigging rig straight to PA and for this the Pleasure Board and Pump makes sense - the concept drives our guitarists wild, simply because they have to turn down. Has anyone gone bass only with an in ear system and this or is it something that everyone in a band has to do?
16. I wouldn't say 'Double Standards' nor would I say 'Publicity Stunt' I would say that every step of this will have been calculated by her management.
17. Bought a Phil Jones Bass Buddy from Ryan - smooth transaction and excellent care in packaging. As many have said deal with confidence.
18. Here's John demonstrating that playing with a pick needn't and shouldn't be crap. http://youtu.be/m_lQ0H4zZEA
19.
There's a lot to be said for keeping it simple, especially live.
Yes - this. MVDV (My View Doesn't Vary)
20. Having read through the 'News' at lunchtime it wouldn't surprise if the whole episode has been fabricated to the benefit of both parties. Swift - She has some new product out, which now has been discussed in the News. Apple - They're right on and care.
21. I'll use the house amp anyday, this way there are no excuses for a house engineer who you're at the mercy of anyway to cock up.
22. Sold my Jule and Demeter to Sean - As many have said, Sean is a pleasure to do business with.
23. Unlike Dave, Jessie J managed to show up for a Glastonbury performance with a cast on her leg - There's a joke in their somewhere, but I'm tired and can't see it. http://youtu.be/2uYUMecVzN8
24.
We dropped Brown Sugar from the set after an unfortunate contretemps when we played Diane Abbot's birthday party. After discussion we decided to go with Honky Tonk Women instead but rewrote the lyrics to avoid giving offence. I met a gin soaked bar room queen in Memphis I put her in a cab and sent her home Paid her tab and went back to my hotel And read the Gideon bible all alone It's the Honky Tonk Women Who would most benefit from gender identity counselling I met a divorcee in New York city Exploiting her vulnerable status ran entirely counter to the personal guidelines I have set for myself The lady then she covered me with roses "I hope these flowers came from a fair trade partner who pays their workers a living wage and respects diversity standards which would meet with the approval of enlightened progressives everywhere" I said, knocking back my glass of herbal tea.
Could you post a recording of this?
25.
I think it's good to be open to stuff that is thought-provoking, arouses strong feelings and stimulates debate.
I personally don't think that Brown Sugar is thought provoking, nor arouses strong feelings and debate. I think that the internet provides a largely unregulated platform to 'spout off' - just like I'm doing
