My 1990 Sabre had a 5 way switch like this I wish they would do a run of Sabre Classics rather than the sterling or stingray 5 classics which never existed until now

I'd have a punt if I had the funds http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G-L-SB1-Bass-Leo-Fen...7#ht_666wt_1137

I'd love a JB-2 but missed out a few months ago on the only one I've seen pop up on BC for sale on account of being skint. I still want one and would go for a Tribute if they did it in sunburst/rosewood,a bit like the USA below. The only options on the Tributes are natural/rosewood and sunburst/maple

What are the top 5 (or 10) basses you've owned?
Godlyke Disciple. Spent a bit of time on this just tweaking the setup and rolling the neck edges and it really is a superb bass. Sold the Stingray as a result.
Looks great in that finish and with the Barts too. I'll bet it sounds sweet as well. Was just thinking back on my Disciple 5 fretted and Deity 4 fretless - both terrific basses - the Deity would have made my top ten if I hadnt been such an unworthy owner (ie my fretless playing sucks) -

1/ Stingray 5 - this is the lightest SR5 I've owned. still with me 2/ white sparkle Sterling - best of the Sterlings I had 3 + 4/ Bolin NS5 and Valenti No.042. both fantastic and both back with their original owners I believe. 5/ G&L Asat semi hollow - probably the best G&L I've owned 6/G&L SB-2 7/Spector NS5 CRFM (now with crazykiwi) 8/ black Pre EB Stingray 9/Warwick streamer Stage 1 10/MM Bongo 5HH (still with me) -
The Bongo shares the same pickups and electronics with the Sterling, although it's only available with a rosewood board (again: to some may sound slightly or vastly different form a Sterling maple).
Bongo pickups have neodymium magnets and an 18v preamp. the dual pickup models are 4EQ Sterling pups have ceramic magnets and a 9v pre with 3EQ I've not owned a single H Bongo but definetely the HS and HH ones are spec'd and sound very different to a Sterling imo

love it in white! (which is odd as I normally dislike black binding) purely on the looks, I prefer an Asat bass with a bound top but these look classy imo
For those who've never tried one of these, I would recommend it. Has the power of a musicman but with a greater variety of tones. The L1500 is not a one pickup G&L L2000 either. It's more aggressive and powerful, and of course you have the space and freedom between the neck and pickup to slap. At lower volumes will remove hardened earwax from the landlord's ears, and at high volume likely to disembowel cats. One of my fave basses. Only selling because I have acquired the special bass of my dreams, an Alembic.
+1 sits in its own space in a band mix and I think they have quite a unique sound. passive/series is a great fingerstyle funk tone on the L1500. I also love playing mine with a pick,it cuts through a lot more than the L-2000.

sorry to hijack the thread, but I just got a black USA Asat Special on Sunday. Not vintage like this one but still very, very lovely indeed. I've found in the limited time I've had it the MFD pickups are somewhere between a regular single coil and a P90 and sound absolutely top drawer. I was initially after a Classic but I'm glad I got the Special instead - better (stronger) tone and more variation imo. definetely a keeper! this one looks a seriously nice guitar. best of luck with the sale/trade
So, which band are you playing with then?
Duran Duran tribute. which is fine with me as I love playing John Taylor's basslines

great looking bass I had a Sterling in the same candy apple red/maple,great combo imo
Seeing as you have one... where does the Bongo sit in all this?
A lot more hi-fi sounding with more extreme EQ. plugging in the SR5 after the Bongo it feels like a fair bit of tone and volume just dropped out - but a couple of minutes with the stingray and I know why I like that bass so much. theres no messing about with it. just a great solid tone without fiddling about with EQ. I can never settle on EQ with the Bongo - I'm always fiddling with the hi and low mids. It was hard work settling on a tone the few times I gigged it but I love it for recording. Mine is an HH and imo none of the settings sound like the classic MM tone. Although It sounds great and is a lot more versatile I prefer the SR5 just because its an unfussy plug in and play bass I'm only down the road and starting rehearsing with my new band up in glasgow in the next couple of weeks. If you ever want to audition the Bongo just give me a shout.

solo'd maybe the L2000/Asat can be a bit aggressive but in a band setting/mix they come into their own imo. my only complaint is the series v parallel outputs are not as well matched as those on a SR5/Sterling
Just throwing in something irrelevant.... it's surprising how big a difference in sound there is between my StingRay 5 and StingRay 4, never mind between them and the G&L.
I love the tone of the 5. a bit more polite/subdued with less sizzle compared to the 4 . but works better from my experience with both

are you going to change your order and go with the Big AL 5? I owned an Albert Lee guitar for a few years. great shape imo. they've discontinued the ice blue now but I guess I'll take whatever I can when the exchange rate gets better and I can import a used one.

the Axis Sport is a fair bit overpriced as well. probably of all the MM guitars the Sports held their value the worst - I've owned three of these - still got one of them - an HSS with the pickguard and two MM90s Sports with the P90 pickups, both without the guard and they all cost £550 or under. I've seen a lot of regular Axis and Supersports with quilt/flame tops for less.

that trans purple is a great looking SR5. anodised gold would work (I think) but +1 on pearloid just to be safe

very nice Joe. isnt it just an ebony facing on the headstock? I had one of these for a week on trial about 10 years ago. loved the really tight compressed tone off it,would have traded my SS1 I had at the time against it but alas the deal didnt go through. always had a hankering for one ever since. if you ever want to move it on to a loving home let me know!
