1. This thread interests me as I am yet to try out an LM iii. However, last monday I did record a video review for the Aguilar Tonehammer and SL112 cabinet for Guitar Interactive Magazine. The review will be in a future issue. I was really impressed with the Aguilar. It's a very small head, lightweight and has an authoritative tone. I was impressed with the clean tone too. The SL cabinets are a good match. I think the MB will as suggested have that clean sheen in comparison. I've owned the F1 and it was a very 'tight' and clinical clean. I used a valve preamp with a pair of F1's to get a more aggressive tone. The TH I think will be a hit if you want a bit of mid bite in there too. Other lightweight heads I have owned includes the TC RH450 that I feel is a bit long in the tooth now given that the GK MB800 I had for a while blew it out of the water in so many ways. (Sorry TC, love ya really - the RH750 was better!!!) I curve ball that I hope to be a good choice, although certainly not the lightest would be the Eden WT550. Ideally, I would love Hartke to stump up a 'travel friendly' version of the LH1000/LH500 using an oversized AB power amp and worthy SMPS.
2. Will listen to offers especially if collected asap. I also meant to say that Uk shipping is included in this price (insured and tracked always).
3. I'm selling my superb poweramp. I'd love to keep it but financially, I have to sell stuff before I can get something else I need! Sad times eh!! You're chance to grab a bargain though. A lightweight and very powerful bargain! These are £732 new and I'd like [s]£600£550[/s] £500/£480 collected for this one. it has the smallest of few marks on it but has always been racked up. The poor thing only notched up one gig too as I used it as a lightweight spare. PM me!!! Incidentally, this amplifier is VERY shallow and fits in a shallow rack case with plenty of room to leave speakons connected!! Can be used in MONO with one output, or even with guitar on one channel and bass on the other. Perfect for slimming down your live rig! http://uk.matrixampl...gt-1600-fx.html Designed by Andy Hunt, who is already widely known as one of the leaders in PA amplifier design. His FOH power amplifiers are highly regarded and his foray in to guitar amplification has been met with arms wide open especially from those using FRFR systems. Guitarists and bassists needing gobs of fat tone with real girth have chosen Matrix to power their AxeFx and other modelling systems. I used mine as a lightweight rack system being ran with a Billy Sheehan preamp and a TC Electronics G Major 2 before switching to an even smaller set up using a Zoom B3 feeding in to the amplifier. (The gain input gain stage on these models have been set to accept a wide range of inputs including preamp pedals as well as full line level rack systems. Neat eh?
Details The Matrix GT1600FX is a 1.6kw (mono bridged), 800 watts a side stereo power amp designed for guitarists who need tons of power in a lightweight, quiet and cool 2U package. Whether you're a bassist needing a power amp delivering maximum clean, controlled wattage to your speakers or simply a guitarist needing maximum power at higher impedences or even just someone who likes to melt the faces of the first 5 rows of an audience, the GT1600FX gives you unrivalled power and sound quality. Featuring 800 watts per channel at 4 ohms and giving out 1600 watts in bridged mode at 8 ohms and 1000 watts at 16 ohms in bridged, this amp will handle the heavyweight power demands of pretty much anything thrown at it whilst still weighing in at an impressive 5kgs. Standard Neutrik combi 1/4 inch/XLR inputs and combi Speakon/1/4 inch outputs give maximum flexibility in connecting the GT1600FX to the pre-amp or modeller of your choice and a dedicated bridged mode output means no special cables. The dual speed 80mm fans also give maximum airflow whilst staying quiet enough for studio use and cool enough in the most demanding of live situations The GT1600FX like all our amps, still has the ability to handle all impedances 4 ohms and over including mis-matched loads giving you the widest choice when using your favourite cabs and speakers. Running a 2x12 cab with an 8 ohm and 16 ohm speaker in mono or running a 4x10 4 ohm cab on one side and a 1x15 16 ohm cab on the other is no problem for the GT1000FX! The amplifier features extensive protection circuitry ensuring it is protected from loudspeaker short circuits and miswiring as well as indicators for protection, bridged-mode and signal lights showing the output signal strength. 4. Just out of interest really, I'd like to know which of the lightweight (or indeed small form factor) bass heads feature Class AB power amplifiers instead of D Class? I think certain MarkBass models do? What about the likes of the Eden Traveller heads? I feel some tests coming on!
5.
Coming and going from these strings. Just starting up a new project with a friend with a drop-c tuning. Going to give the 50-120 set a go for that. Would prefer steel, but this is a lot more affordable that getting the individual strings!
Drop C and Drop C# works very nicely with this set on my PJ bass (34" scale)!
Dood, that looks awesome! Great work! I did wonder what you were up to... I'll bet that sounds beastly. What are you planning for the preamp? Eude
Thank you! - Well, there's plenty of top end available from these pups so I am using a passive pot for rolling off the highs. I'm going to test an idea on this one by using a single bass to mids sweepable semi parametric EQ. A bit like the VMC by EMG and err, that little green pedal I forget the name of right now which does the same, but with a wider sweep in to the lows.

I've just posted this on Facebook but of course I really should be sharing it here first! I've been busy working on my Ibanez Gerald Veasley signature bass - it's a bit more Dan Veall now To save repeating myself, here's my Facebook post - apologies as I've left all the tags in: http://www.facebook.com/DoodOnBass1/posts/10152137990743123?notif_t=like I'd say my custom job I am doing is about 90% completed now! A final tidy up of cabling, secure nuts and bolts, but I am really pleased to say all the electronics, of course, worked first time. I guess the model number of the bass should change from Ibanez Guitars GVB to DVB!! So - I've stripped out the Bartolini Pickups and replaced them with threeEMG Pickups DC models as you can see. I've used EMGs for years, nothing else really. Thanks to Mark Ball at Musical Instrument Rehab, the front of the body has been routed and an insert to match the fretboard has been added. I wanted to shift the back pickup away from the bridge a bit for more body to the tone when solo'd. The existing preamp is out and eventually I will design a dedicated pre to go on board but there's plenty of oomph from the pickups at the moment! Next up, a custom switching harness ala Brian May - the three switches simply turn each pickup on and off. However, unlike Sir May's guitar, I've used DPDT switches that give me an 'all on' config when the switches are all in the off position - so I'll never go silent of something knocks a switch. Clever eh? There's a master tone control and master volume next to the inset jack socket cut out. Power at the moment is 9V but will go up to 18V in time. Of course, this lil beast is strung up with D'Addario Strings and Planet Waves strings and my choice is the brand new FLEXSTEELS which are awesome!!! I will do a video in time, but I've alot on right now so bear with me! What do you think? - Oh, by the way! This bass is a rather epic Ibanez Basses Gerald VeasleyGVB model. It's really cool and in someways I feel a bit bad for doing naughty things to Gerald's design! He's a great guy! - Anyway, Gerald, if you are reading, I hope you like what I've done for my needs! It was a super bass to begin with, but ya know this was fun! The Gerald Veasley GVB bass is great for soloing, chordal work and fast playing due to it's incredible 14mm string spacing. Funnily it is something I'd toyed with for a very long while as my own basses are 16mm. I often wondered should I go more narrow. Gerald beat me to it - and interestinglyJohn Myung followed suit with his musicman basses a few years ago. Anyway, let me know what you think!
9. I have to admit, I lost track of where it went to! I think it went off to someone else afterward?
10.
Just buy a Powersoft K20: 18,000W bridged into 4Ω enough for you... Mind you, at around £6k a go, just think of what this rack cost....
And boy are they good! - Mine wasn't a K series but it still had loads of power on tap with lots of weight in the lows.
11.
Hi Dood, Matrix do an 800W 1u amp, it's the GT800FX Essentially it's the XT800 from their PA side of the business, was thinking of one myself.
Very true, though it's a stereo 400+400, so you'd need to bridge it to get the 800W. The only issue I have with that is it means you can not use a 4 ohm cabinet with it. The bridge option is 8 Ohms minimum load. I'd much prefer a single monoblock 800W power amp unit for flexibility
12. Yep definitely not a problem with the cabinet. Your bass pickup is picking up mains noise from your amp sat on top of the cabinet. The tweeter in the cabinet allows you to hear that noise more clearly. It's completely normal and some basses will pickup more noise than others. You'll sometimes get the same problem playing under strip lights with basses with non humbucking pickups. So nothing is blown by the sounds of it. Your bass is just very good at picking up noise in the room and your cabinet is very good at reproducing a wide range of frequencies, including those with noise in.
13. Ooooooof! That's a corker! Beautiful bass!! Yup Lucky, that Burl sure is tasty!
14.
Good thread this. Bought a sonic port and downloaded software recently and this is helping on the practical application side Any suggestions as to a good value for money mic stand holder for an iPad ?
I bought a Hercules iPad clamp secondhand from Tayste here on BC. It can either be used as a desktop stand or it clips to a mic stand / music stand. I'd recommend it - it's very well made and the clamp itself looks like it will go the distance rather than some cheap ones I've seen.
15. Cheers Paul! - Ah yes, I'd panged for a second PJBS but alas funds didn't allow - so i've decided it's time to spruce this one up a bit! Thanks for the info - I'll check the sizes of mine against the Basslines - I'm sure mine must match in that case.
16. I'd like Matrix Amplification to do a 1U rack using their 800W RMS modules. here are two in my GT1600FX and I have to say, it's stonkingly good. It's not D Class but AB using a switch mode power supply that can actually deliver the kinda current us bass players need. It's probably the best light weight power amp I have come across at just 5Kg, but it is a 2u. I'd have put my Powersoft before it, but that was a very long amp that you had to use a deep rack case with, thus kinda negating the point of saving space with a 1u for me. That said, the Powersoft kit is pretty astonishing too.
17. Feedback? I think what would be really handy - as we could really do with understanding what noise you are getting and in what circumstances, is to record an audio clip clearly and upload it. Buzzing and Feedback are two different things so it's a bit confusing!
18. I've had the pleasure of supporting Captain when he did a solo tour. He brought PG on bass and his playing with just superb! He had just a TBird and this 4x10 Laney combo that he cranked. Superb sound and great melodic playing. I stole a lot of lines that gig!
19.
Nah, its deffo electrical as it does it between songs.
It buzzes between songs? When you are not playing you mean? - If it does that it would suggest it's not the cabinet, more like something else in the signal path.
20.
Don't mention Hartke to me. My Kilo is a piece of dog crap and has spent more time being repaired than sitting on top of my cabs. Biggest waste of money I ever spent.
Sorry to hear it has given you so much grief. It's an isolated incident, but I can understand how frustrating it is. I've been using Hartke gear for well over 15 years and have been trouble free.
21. For the price of these you could have a B3 and a G3 secondhand - or an MS-50G and MS-60B for a tiny two pedal size rig! I've used the B3 in a guitar rig too and it worked beautifully (drive and distortion coming from the amp in this case)
22. That's very kind! Thank you! I'll get measuring later on. The pickups in question that are in the bass are nothing fancy, They are stock Japanese P and J pickups for this 80's bass. I bought some shells off ebay and they were slightly too big to fit in the routs - maybe just a millimetre in it - so I think I'll need to get my glasses out to make sure I read them correctly! Alternatively - I'd be interested to know who has upgraded the pickups in their own Jazz Bass Special and what pickups slotted straight in without work. I've seen EMG and Seymour Duncan upgrades so that *may* give an indication of size.
23. Definitely worth tracking down what the problem is. Could be a loose cable or hardware, or even the speaker mounting screws (or the grill screws) need tightening.
24. Hey all! My go-to 4 stringer, an 80's PJBS has certainly seen a good life and is in superb condition for it's age, but the pickup covers are a little on the tatty side and I'd like to get some replacements. I'd tried in the past by getting a set of clones off of ebay but they didn't fit in the routs. They were too large. Anyone had to do this themselves or have any advice on ensuring I get the correct ones? Cheers! Dooooood
