1. Hey all! I was just looking for a song on da'interweb and happened upon one of those '50 best bass line' magazine articles. You know the sort, the kind bereft of anything other than 'songs that the guitarist in your band knows'. Well, I gots me to thinking that if it hasn't been done already (I apologise if it has) but why not create a single playlist with tracks for us bass players to delve in to? I recall that we had a general 'what are you listening to' type Spotify play list previous, but how about a definitive 'you need to listen to this bass line' list. We needn't stop at 50 either. What songs do you think everyone should at least know to listen to, or even be able to play? If it sounds like a good idea, here's a collaborative playlist I've created to test the water: Link fixed: http://open.spotify.com/user/onlinedood/playlist/6UkfcLnRafb95u7EnciaAU I've added just one song, the first bass line I ever learned to play Oh and I know that some people hate Spotify, but I thought it was the easiest way to make a physical playlist that everyone can access for free. What do you think? Rubbish idea? Please let me know if the link doesn't work! Doooooood
2. I've decided that as much as I wanted to hang on to both this cab and my 2.5XL, it's time to let them go finally. Needs must as much as it'd be nice to hang on to them. Plans afoot!
3. I hung on to this cab for quite some time wanting to keep it, but it's time for it to go! It is paired with a Hartke 4.5XL and that is also advertised too.

Zoom B5 dream
I'd be happy with a B3 with midi…
Although a massive faff, I saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEDnf59tq-o Midi for the G3 - I guess it'd work with the B3 too!

Zoom B5 dream
I'd be happy with a B3 with midi…
Would also work for me. I've a superb lil MIDI controller that mated up with the B3 wouldn't take up much floor space. The ability to flip to new patches of three active effects would transform the B3 I feel.

Zoom B5 dream

The problem with the G5, trying to make it work for a B5 version is that the architecture can't handle the dynamics of a bass signal to accurately recreate the sounds we want to hear from this pedal. It'd have to be substandard audio quality. However, if Zoom upgraded the processors that appear on the G5 then it's entirely possible that a B5 would be possible. Frankly, I'd love one. - The B3 is excellent but I often wanted an extra slot or two of effects. Incidentally, the entry level B1XON can handle 5 effects at once, so to create a B5 with TOTR processing, isn't out of the realms of possibility. Zoom have already posted that they can not provide the 6 effects at once processing of the G3 on the B3 due to the hardware limitations after a petition to them. They aren't daft though - it's obvious there is demand from us bass players. I expect something won't be too far away!
7.
JamUp app on ipad or iphone and a Line6 sonicport would be the best option in my opinion, and would be cheaper than the Kemper or the AxeFX.
Yes with the inclusion of AudioBus app too extends routing options. Brilliant app!
8. I've been using an F# on my Shuker 7 for years! It's a 175 gauge string on that and the tone is very very good. Don't forget that although the fundamental frequency is down in the 20hz region, your ears are picking up on the overtones and harmonics more. Your brain fills in the bits that are missing so you hear the note lower than B for example. As for being flappy, well that's down to bass construction and string design. Yes if you take a B string and detune it to F#, sure it will be flappy and unuseable. If you take a string designed for that tuning and put it on a bass that is also designed to bring out the best of that kinda string then you should get good results. I do for sure. As for the Dingwall, yeah I've played a prototype that Sheldon brought over to the Uk with it's 37" scale F# string. Again the gauge was a custom 175 designed by Circle K and it worked beautifully! So I agree with the post above. It's not for everybody, but it's just really good fun and you can get really creative with using different tunings. Isn't that what music is about?
9. One of my all time favourite rigs I owned was an SVT2 Pro on top of a pair of Hartke 4.5XL cabinets. Just monstrously superb, but these days would probably be the death of me. Loved it!
10. If you don't need all that modelling stuff thrown in but just want really tasty pristine modulations, compression, pitch shift, delays, reverbs and EQ then I would steer you toward the TC Electronic racks. The G Major 2, G Force or if you want the ability to go rack or floor, then the G System (latest version) is superb.
11. Rotosound do a 175 gauge string and as mentioned above, Warwick's Dark Lord set has a 175 in too. A big thumbs up for Newtone in the UK who can wind something of a custom variety too. Great service from those guys.
12. Yes indeedy! Very nice! These are really lovely basses to play. I nearly plumped for one!
13. I've a TH500 and have to say it does a beautiful slap sound. There is plenty of top available! I reviewed one with the SL cabs and a Spector 'super jazz' Coda bass and found the sound to be big and fat with just the right amount of bite, rather than being all top and no..well.. balls!
14. I've gone the other way down to F# on my 7. I have to agree, they are brilliant fun, not at all hard to play and not in the slightest scary! Hours of enjoyment even when I'm just noodling about.
15. You'd expect that if the preamp in a bass was supposed to be completely transparent that you *shouldn't* hear any difference when it is switched in or completely bypassed. The difference being only when you boost or cut the EQ controls. There *is* often a difference between passive and 'flat settings' active and that can usually be attributed to the preamp having some sort of natural colouring aside from the usual cut and boost settings available. What is inside the Cort I do not know, but it seems to me that it could actually be doing a good job. (Unless of course you particular want something that adds additional colour that is!)
16. Bargain! Bloody brilliant preamp! Mine has done so many gigs! It does way more than Billy Sheehan tones. I'd buy it in a shot!
17. It's crazy isn't it? The whole marketplace *is* really slow at the moment though. Seems there's tons of really good gear not being bought. I suspect it's because of funds being diverted to the 'going on summer holiday kitty' instead. I'm considering effects and stuff at the moment, as well as possibly needing a laptop so ideally would like to see this lil chap on it's merry way!
18. £500 delivered £480 collected. No thoughts on trade bait at the moment.
19.
Very nice, thanks dood. Liked it so much you had to buy it?
Ahh ha ha ha! Wasn't it Victor Kiam who said that lol.. Yes, I'd been eyeing up this one since I first saw it 'in stock'. It was the exact spec I was looking for but I grew in to the colour. Kinda glad- it's an utter peach of a bass..err.. a umm.. yellow peach.. lol!
20. .... which looks very fine sat next to my other basses
21.
Thanks guys. I wonder what the Yellow looks like with the lighter fretboard though... The green's still out there as a winner for me. The AB1 would be tempting but that a big step up in price and tough to justify! My first bass was a Jazz copy and I've always had a soft spot for them so the SJ5 was tempting.
I asked the same question and Mark very kindly sent me a picture of this AB1 as an example of the yellow with the lighter fretboard, though this is a Bird's Eye Maple.
22. Yes I have played the NG-2 quite a lot and have to say it really is every bit as good as you'd expect from Dingwall. The first batch have been delayed a bit but should well be on their way from Canada soon out to the rest of the world. The combustions, even though they are the 'more accesible' end of Dingwall's price bracket are still very much a premium instrument. The tone of the NG-2 is throaty with a mid presence on Nolly's favourite setiing when the pickups are in series. I had ordered an NG-2 myself but I am very very pleased to say that I have a brand spanking new and absolutely stunning AB1 5/3 model sat next to me right now. I'm finding that for me personally the extra front pick up gives a great fatness to the bass, even solo'd where I can do a 'P Bass on steroids' kinda sound. I think as the model I played on was a production prototype, the NG's out soon (including a large batch due for September) are going to be superb!
