1.
Remind me, when it's upright. . . . which one is the full range speaker?
The one at the opposite end to the port. So stood up, the top speaker is full range.
 2.
I always found that it's other people that suck the soul from you.
You aren't wrong there.
 3.
you are most kind my friend
I've had a (very good) spare neck for a bit and as much as I would love to have Jon do me something like a JJB CL bass, my budget doesn't exist, so I asked him about a month ago to do a natural body to go with the bass neck. I'll do a proper thread for it anyway as it's something a bit special for me!
 4.
I know this topic has probably been done on numerous occasions but I could do with some advice please. I have a bass that is approx 10lb overall weight and it feels heavy on the shoulder using my usual wide leather strap of almost 4" wide (not much in the way of padding though). My normal strap is fine with my other basses. My question is, what strap do you use or would recommend?.I have heard Comfort Strapp are good? Does anyone use those? Many thanks in advance guys and much appreciated.
Depending on what bass you have, I would most definitely suggest, if you haven't done so already, getting some super light weight tuning keys fitted too. For example, I changed the tuning keys on a precision bass a while back to Gotoh Res-O-Lite machine heads. The bass no longer suffered from any neck dive and on a strap felt many pounds lighter as you don't have a weight at the end of a 'long arm' bearing down on your shoulder.
 5.
how are these still here? I'm looking for pups for a non fan fret 4 string .... and at this price they might be worth a shot.
Bonkers that these pickups are indeed still here - but there ya go! They came off my Dingwall AB1.
 6.
I am, perhaps I am just lucky with venues But then again, I am not one of those bassist that does rely on monitors, so perhaps I would notice if I went ampless If you play a distorted tone, you don't really want or need cabs that are crystal clear, toppy or however else you want to refer to it With the Barefaced, I used a cab simulator to 'colour' up the sound somewhat and smoothen things out. I haven't gigged the Bergantino that replaced it yet and wont for a few weeks, from rehearsals I am undecided if I will still use the cab sim or go without. The cab sim will still be used to send signal to FOH though.
I see what you are saying and I agree, if you aren't using some sort of shaping on a driven signal, a tweetered cabinet can possibly sound harsh. I do use 'shaping' only on the drive portion of my bass signal too, that is true however, any effects/direct bass tone I use gets the full range treatment and thus I need the tweeter to be alive and well. I either use a cab sim or DSP EQ. - Like you, the idea being that the tone, where ever it is sent, IEMs, FRFR, FOH, Foldback, whatever, is always the same. The tone is set without the need for a cabinet to be part of the overall sound.
 7.
Okay, drummers have the UK based Young Drummer of the Year (http://www.youngdrummeroftheyear.com/ 2017 event just concluded) and the global drumming contest for female drummers Hit Like A Girl (http://hitlikeagirlcontest.com/ 2017 contest accepting entries now), but is there anything - especially something UK centric - for bass players? And if not... why not? Jack
Nothing to add to the thread, other than to say that Mike Dolbear deserves an award himself for his services to the drumming community. Lovely bloke that bends over backwards for young and upcoming drummers. I'm not aware of a bass specific event, but I see no problem with recognising and encouraging new musicians in any form. I was a beginner once and I am proud to say that I spend every day nurturing and supporting new bassists and guitarists.
 8.
Id love to try one, but all this talk of them being crystal clear puts me off. If players want a PA monitor sound, why bother with a power amp and cab at all?
You are gigging right? He he! So many venues have monitors that just aren't up to the job of handling bass guitar, especially for those bassists who tune anything below Eb lol. So, for me, being able to bring along a 'monitor' that can more than handle the job and that i have some control over takes the pressure off the rattley vocal monitors held together with gaffer tape! I think it's easy to get 'crystal clear' confused with 'toppy'. The BF BB cabinets (for example) only reproduce what you put in to them, like a top quality PA. (Quite the opposite from coloured bass cabinets I suppose, not that there is ANYTHING wrong with that, if that is what is wanted I hasten to add.) So if it sounds toppy, it's not the fault of the cabinet, it's what is being put in to it
 9.
drats , just found out they have been discontinued, am hoping I dont get on with them now as it could be frustrating trying to get hold of them in future , wish I had gone with the usual Prosteels now
Where did you hear that? I'm not sure that's true!
 10. Great bass and a brilliant neck on these. I have to say, much better than the Nate Mendel, which is a good bass in itself.
 11. If you love the flexibility of the 750's EQ section then I'd point you towards Bergantino's B|Amp. Loving mine!
 12.
Anybody know of anyone who could make an early 70's style Jazz Bass neck, and have a ballpark figure for price? I'm talking pre-75, so not bullet truss rod, maple/maple with binding and pearl blocks. John Shuker isn't far from me so may try him but all suggestions welcome!
This x1M.
 13.
I went to the celebration of Vic's life gig tonight. Very emotional but great to see his basses and his new custom Ritter fan-fret in particular. Lots of people up and playing and amazing to see a certain Mr P Turner using Vic's beloved Yamaha Attitude on Superstition and Play That Funky Music White Boy! I miss our Vic so much but lovely to natter with family and friends and share some memories.
I had no idea when the celebration was happening. I assume it was for close family only? - I'm proud to have known Vic and call him a friend. He will be missed - and come LBGS I am sure many of us will be having a drink in his name!
 14. Glad I spotted this thread as I was a bit shocked to see the prices of a USA P bass Tortie guard for my bass. Especially as I'm after a darker brown tort rather than bright red.
 15.
This comes up on BC about every 2 months!
I know! Why do they keep advertising this absolute mess? It's nearly as bad as that dude who keeps 'wrecking' guitars then selling them as something special. "Oh look! Ive glued a toaster to this violin bass, give me 500 quid!"
 16.
the man's an artist mate
Boy is he! Golden hands that man. The attention to detail and quality of workmanship is second to none.
That looks seriously good. That neck grain is amazing. If you're recording with it, it'd be great to hear some from it. Thanks for posting
I feel very lucky to have heard NR1 recorded and it is goooooood! Very good!
 17.
Thanks matey, beauty ain't she
Yum, Yum, Yum, YUM!
 18. I'm in the process of having a 'new' Precision and am just waiting for some pictures to come through. Quite excited at the prospect of sharing it! There's quite a story to go with the pictures too! (well, for me it's interesting anyway!!)
 19. oh - P.s. I have two sets of these pickups that are exactly the same, you may end up having either as I store them in the same place. Both out of a stock PJBS and thus exactly the same.
 20. I will of course mark up the cables. Please note, I would not have trimmed any cables unless it was absolutely necessary to do so in order to remove the hardware. I have also been careful to make sure that the point that I trimmed the wires allows for the most amount of cable left to re-solder. Everything was working perfectly at the time of removal and has been stored very carefully. Not that it needs saying as it's fairly obvious - I can help with reconnecting everything with instructions but I can't be held responsible for stuff 'at your end' and thus no returns.
 21.
Nice piece in Bass Guitar Magazine this month.
I've found it difficult to contribute to the thread and it was tough reading this, but yes really beautiful words from another good friend. Vic's Facebook profile picture I will always have imprinted reminding me of a day we spent laughing together. RIP Vic, indeed, a very fine gentleman.
 22.
Anyone noticed any lack of heft when wearing gloves?
Well, it all changed when they stopped using the much heavier thread. New technology gloves just don't have what the old ones do best...
 23. I suppose most people go straight for Scott's reason, but there are plenty more. Some bassists are allergic to Nickel and thus use gloves to act as a barrier. I've heard of some who suffer from sticky / clammy hands, for whatever reason and like to use gloves to keep things dry when playing. This is actually quite a wise idea too because if you are playing long, sweaty gigs and digging in way too hard all the time, keeping the fingers dry can go a way to helping the prevention of blisters. I've never tried using gloves so can't comment on experiences personally.
 24. I can do pictures yes! I will upload them this afternoon! The controls for the preamplifier are: Master Volume TBX Tone Control EQ 'Sweep' Control Three Way Pickup Selector Mini Three Way Mode Selector (includes Bypass Mode) The PJ Pickups themselves look no different from a standard set and the knobs are classic Fender 'F' stamped type. You'll need the picture to get what I mean The preamplifier takes a 9v battery as standard.
