1.
i just recently joined Preston thrashers Solitary as my 2nd band and played my first 2 gigs in the last week or so are there any other thrash players on here that don't use a pick? i have had several comments about the fact that i don't, none of them bad i was just surprised by this. im just curious on players preference in this genre anyhow heres what we do, check em out if you like that kind of thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncm0V0LjOos
As soon as Preston and Thrash are mentioned in the same sentence I think of one band. The very mighty Xentrix. My thrash heart belongs to them I reckon, so being as you're in Preston too then, there's a bit of love there for ya!
 2.
I'm pretty well convinced that the thickness of the neck plays a huge part in tone etc. My old 71 had a bass ball bat neck and the tone was very thick and authorative specially on the A string..and I haven't played a newish USA model with the same weight of tone.
Stuart Spector and many others are in agreement!
 3. The majority of the 'P Bass' tone comes from the type of pickup and it's position. Stick the same pickup in the same place on a Musicman bass or a Jazz bass, it's still going to 'do' that P Bass thing. They will all of course be affected by all the other variables that makes one bass slightly different in tone to another. Indeed, even the same pickup type can be engineered for different sounds, i.e, More mids, less gain etc, etc - but the split coil arrangement still sounds more P than a single coil J in the same position.
 4.
I went to both the Northampton ones, very enjoyable but it made me realise just how pedestrian a player I was (watching Dood almost made me give up the instrument entirely). It was nice to meet people from outside my local area. If an 'allcomers' one was arranged in Northampton again I'd certainly make the effort if I was available.
Awwww bless you! It was all smoke and mirrors! - Yup I'm up for another! It has been a while since I have been able to get out to any Bass Bash get togethers.
 5. If you haven't already, join the MU as they have great advice available via log in on rates for all kinds of work. There's also sample contract templates to help protect you when you do set a date and price.
 6.
I'm guessing thats unbalanced if you are doing stereo down a single XLR?
In stereo mode yes indeed. R/L/Gnd. Shielded cable still and zero noise.
 7.
Dood - do you mount your Fischer stick on that? Or did you go with something different?
Ah! ha ha! No, I should have said.. Fischer stick goes on my belt. Love that thing! Especially being able to drive a stereo or mono signal down a single XLR cable locked in place. Plenty of steam for driving BIG earphones too. Anyway, I digress. I mount a Zoom H2n on it (thread to be created on that soon). Previously either a Q8 or H1. Great for recording but, as you'll have spotted in another thread, makes for a great personal ambient monitor too!
 8.
Dood - I said hello late on the Sunday at the LBGS - it's a shame you're all that way down there or I'd have stuck the kettle on a-la petergales (Peter, thank you, I'll be in touch). On the other hand, if Wymondham is your town then you're super near one of my favourite places on the planet and I'm a tad jealous - Hethel. Birthplace of my little plastic car.
Hey again! Yes, I recognised your BC handle when you told me too! I think by Sunday I was flagging, hopefully I had a bit of sanity left to chat coherently ha ha!! - Yes indeed, quite a way from Ponty! Thank you though, really thoughtful - I do enjoy a decent brew too as well. Yup, I am in Wymondham which is often swarming with those lovely little cars. I have various friends who are involved with the brand locally too and I often have to endure some tasty pics and video clips, yet I've not been in one yet - so to own one, well, I'll be a bit jealous back
 9.
Dood! My OCD would drive me mad if the headphone amp was on it's side!
Doesn't look like much spare room ha ha! - my devices are slim and tall in comparison so I hadn't taken that in to consideration!
 10.
Dood! My OCD would drive me mad if the headphone amp was on it's side!
Ahh yes, I've just measured the distance from what would the the edge of the stand to the adjustable joint on my clamp and it looks like it just falls short of the midway point of that H/P amp. - I could be wrong mind!
 11. Just found a cheaper one with a larger size jaw on the clamp: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/W-Handlebar-Camera-Seatpost-Clamp-Roll-Bar-Mount-Mounting-Adapter-f-GoPro-Hero/262836994474?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D2220072%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3Dbcd67f95626b41dbab911ebec05c9207%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D162265553533
 12.
As a continuation of this, I've now bought one... and one of these - so the headphone amp can be mounted for the drummer/percussionist via one of the many stands they seem to have hanging around in their general area. Anybody interested in doing anything similar, the above is a K&M KM238. PS - you will also need a 3/8" to 5/8" thread converter if you are planning to use with the above headphone amp. Hope this helps somebody - probably easier for a drummer to be able to reach for the volume knob on this thing as opposed to a wired/wireless pack on their body.
Here's what I've just bought that I clamp to my iPad holder. They both then attach to any stand going: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162265553533?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
 13. I'm yet to get to try out Vanderkley gear properly! I set myself a task to go check them at the London Bass Guitar Show, but alas it was one of the many stands that I didn't have time to get to. Just crazy busy! I'd like to hear a pair of these or the 2x12 version.
 14. Ok, one more... apologies! - I'm going to do a thread about it. Just arrived, the Zoom H2n field recorder that can record from 4 directions (kinda like surround sound). It's just brilliant for picking up rehearsal recordings and even gigs. Yeah, I knew it would be good but it ended up being much better than expected!
 15. More recently though, the D'Addario Eclipse tuner that I bought with my last order of strings is really rather good. Also from TC Electronic, I still love the SpectraComp, but just arrived, the 'Sub n' Up' is just a bonkers good stand alone Octave pedal. The tracking down low is better than any pedal I've used to date.
 16. Reaper DAW by Cockos. I've been using it for donkeys years now and not really scratched the surface of what it's truly capable of. It's just a nice bit of software that I can even do basic video editing on!
 17.
How was it?
Very happy memories and lots of very cool bass gear. Indeed it was 'the early days' as the forum was still known as BassWorld back then!
 18. Jon Shuker and I are working on a really cool idea which I think is rather clever. For now though, here's a few headstocks that are a little more elegant than a cut off neck. ^^^ Nice!

 20. I had to 'reshape' my stands for my 7 string. The neck on my Shuker isn't massive as I use a 16mm spacing, but I had to go to work on my stands by gently opening the hefty metal neck supports. The neck just squeezed in but I knew it was safe. Now I just use those tour stands that allow instruments to slide in sideways instead. This sort of thing:
 21. Hey chap! I'd probably just go for one of the 1U sized D Class heads like the Eich T series, MarkBass F1 or F500, Gallien Kruger MB500 or MB800 (Or Fusion models) , (TC BH500 or BH800 for a little larger) and plug in to the effects return socket, which ends up being kinda the same thing. Simply because the cost of these small but loud stand alone power amplifiers can be higher than buying the mass produced head equivalent. What's inside the box is often the [s]same[/s] similar power amplifier guts anyway ha! That said, if the price was good, I;d have probably stumped up for the Demeter as it gets good reviews, but the the Bergantino B|Amp came along, and that is a seriously nice amplifier.
 22.
The super long D'Addarios fitted the B string on my Combustion well enough with no silk hanging over. Are the Combustions different in some way as I thought Dingwalls were all 34" to 37" scale unless you otherwise requested?
At the nut end the outer winding of the B string falls short in all the examples I've seen including my own basses. I'd be interested to see a picture of yours to see how the string does go on. Maybe you have a different model, I have no idea! Mine is a 2016 version.
 23.
Worth trawling Talkbass as well - the general informed opinion is that you need a preamp capable of handling the very high impedence of a Piezo pickup otherwise your tone will be shot to pieces..
Yes indeed. Radial do a range of pedal preamps with a 10M ohm input for just this need
 24.
Oh bloody hell Dood, get a grip! I was talking about radio in general, not the BBC. I'd say more, but you've already dragged f***ing politics into this topic.
Guess I forgot the smiley
 25.
Understatement of the year so far ...
Yes! Biased in what they play, say, do... Can't expect much more from the British Biased Corporation
