Conan. Is that one of the short scale mini Jazz`s or are you just a very tall chap!
-
Ta for the replies. I think I`m going to order a J&D. But they don`t have the white one that I really like the look of until the 22nd of April Must resist!!

That`s a bit more than I`m looking to spend Grangur but thank you very much for your kind offer re the postage and packaging.

I`m looking to buy a cheap Jazz bass, just for playing in the house. The 3 candidates are: Harley Benton Jazz, J&D 75 Jazz and the Aria STB Jazz. I had a HB P bass and it was decent, the J&D gets a bit of love and I like the colour options but both of these brands have stories regarding rough frets and quality issues which makes me think they are one of those "lucky dip" basses. I know, at the price point, you can have some with issues. I can`t find much info on the Aria and I realise that they aren`t the Aria of old but I can play one in GG in Glasgow and see what it`s like. Fire away....

The VM Jazz is a decent bass. I had a 77 one with the maple neck with white blocks, tasty! The neck is the opposite to the L2000 which is 44mm and well "chunky" whereas the Jazz is 38mm and slim.

The crackle is usually caused by a dirty pot. Can be an easy fix or it may need replaced which might cost more than the amp is worth if you get a shop to repair. I owned one of these in the past but I wouldn`t buy one again. What is a good price? I sold mine for about £25 a couple of years ago. What kind of budget do you have? I think the Fender Rumble amps are a good bit better than the Marshall if you can stretch to one of them.

Depending on your location, I`m sure someone local to you on here would be happy to help you out re a basic set up if you are unsure of doing this yourself.

Gibson and Fender will survive in some form. The brand names will be worth money to somebody. As for the future of bass, I just bought a Fender Mexican 50`s P bass and it is perfect and looks stunning imo. Would I pay almost double the money for a bog standard US P bass? Not a chance. I have owned US models before but this Mexican is as good as them. Will the US just be a custom shop manufacturer, selling only top of the line models?

As stated by Essential T, Bob Daisley does indeed own Ronnie`s old bass. Bob had 2 Zemaitis basses and Geddy Lee wanted to buy them from him. He kept the one above and sold Ged his other one. They were a great band.

Thanks for all the replies. Ta for your thoughts on the Markbass Traveller Marc. Thinking about it, if I was going down that route, I would stick to the 8 ohm version, much more versatile.

I`m on the hunt for a new cab. I play in a classic rock band, we can be quite loud sometimes, a mix of smaller pubs where it`s back line only - nowt through the pa and larger places where usually back line is provided. I use a P bass into a Hartke LH 500, no effects into a Ashdown ABM mini 2x10. I have used various Ashdowns for years and whilst there is nothing wrong with them, I`m looking for a change. Ideally I`m looking for a 1 cab solution, something not to heavy, so no 4 x10`s. I have e mailed Alex at Barefaced as I like the look of the 2 x10, 4 ohms model but any other options around the £550 mark would be appreciated. Anyone got experience of the Markbass Traveler 2x10, 4 ohms? I have never used their products before so any input is welcome.

Nah, I had a Japanese one from 1986. I think the later one were made in Taiwan.

Cheers Romeo.

Hey Tubster. Sounds interesting but I will need to move on a Ibanez and Yamaha bass to pay for one. If I get the cash together I will give you a shout.

How do you know if you're any good?!

I am mediocre at best but have just rejoined the band I left last summer (not under the best terms either) as the last 2 guys couldn`t hack it, so someone loves me! -
At least they are being honest and upfront about what they want/expect from a new member. Which if you use Gumtree up here is a rare thing let me tell you. Not everybody wants to gig every weekend.
-
Cheers Neep. I liked the L2000`s I owned but mostly ran it in passive mode, too many options for me. I agree with you re the L`s neck size/shape. I don`t mind a wide neck but it was to much of a handful for my dainty digits The 3 band eq sounds just like what I`m looking for.

Has any one got or had one of these. I have gas for a G&L. Had a couple of L2000 Tributes but didn`t like the "chubby" neck. Or better holding out for a s/hand US model of some description. Tried to do a search in the market place for a US model but couldn`t get any results. Ta.

Softening your opinion towards the nice blokes

A few years back, the company I worked for had a Northern Irish sales rep who did quite well and lived in the same up market neighbourhood as Van and yes, he is as unpleasant as some people say. -

I don`t really have an opinion on GG`s music but it`s your car, play whatever you like. Tell him to get the bloody bus! -
I got one for Xmas. Put on a set of D`addrio strings, Gotoh reverse tuners, Gotoh standard bridge, black racing stripes and strap locks. A lot of people seem to change the pickups but I like the original ones. The tuners and the bridge were in the spares box. I didn`t like the Fender strings so they went right away. I`m really liking the bass.

Sad to here this news. He worked on a few of my favourite albums. Just read, he was only 61.

My bad, it`s a gig bad but a rather nice one. Would set you back about £50 if you had to buy it I think. The bass is really good. I have always preferred the Yammy P pickup to Fenders and it looks stunning. I don`t think you will be disappointed.

Some of our US brothers take the very severe hump if you slag off US made products. Maybe that`s a good thing, to be proud of products made in your own country but the quality of some Gibson`s, Fenders and Ric`s does leave a lot to be desired. But that could be said of most mass produced manufacturers. Give me a Tokia over a Gibson any day.

I`m surprised that they are still in stock as well. I bought a BB1024 from guitarguitar around May last year and the guy said they had bought up all the remaining UK stock. Mine was £500 including the superb case which was a bit of a bargain.
