1. Yeah the Hoppus having a much higher output pu there the seymour duncan quarter pounder equipped ones and the squier bass VI has not only lower output pick ups but smaller strings too. So yes the output will be lower than your used too.
 2.
Has the OP shared what his goal/goals are or what he wants to do with playing bass guitar? Blue
Hey Blue my goals have changed every so often as i make improvements. I think at the moment my goals are simply to continue improving. I don't need other bass players to think im a great player and so on but i do want others to think that i can play a bit, if that makes sense.
 3. Disgraceful!. Can't really say anymore than that, i do really hope this gets resolved for the buyer in a timely manner.
 4. Ive had two active basses and the only thing i prefer over passive is the lack of noise and interference, and the generally hotter signal they can provide. Saying that ive had very quiet well shielded passive basses. For sound and ease of use i think in general i prefer higher output passive pickups.
 5. Bring along fruit and some jars lol, be amusing at least. When me and others jam generally i will have a load of little bass lines etc ive been working on and others will join in and help me work on them. Or i might also have an idea how the other parts should go and direct them in that direction. If others have stuff i will do the same but im slightly more limited by my current lack of theory etc for the most part.
 6. I really like these and am actually very jealous. Nice bass indeed.
 7. Thanks for the replies all taken on board. I don't have any huge expectations but i would within a reasonable length of time be able to pick up a bass play as well as im capable of constantly and i would like other players to think i can actually play and not think im rubbish.
Why don't you just join a band and get on with it?
That's something im working on and do have on my mind.
 8. Its my anniversary give or take a few days of playing bass. And then a couple of months away from being a basschat member for 2 years. I'm really not sure how well im doing or how to rate myself. It's just in the last few months that ive made good progress, im totally self taught and i think i wasted a fair bit of time doing the wrong things, however im pleased i learnt what works and what doesn't work so well myself. I am still a little disappointed in my ability. Although several people (guitar players so not sure if there opinion is fully valid) say i play well and that they feel im about at the right level for my time playing. I have a good basic grasp of playing. I can learn and play pretty much all beginner level stuff, a lot of beginner/intermediate things too, but after that i struggle. I guess i feel like a relative novice still but in the next year im hoping to make good progress. I do have fairly simple tastes in bass, favoring tone, quality playing and timing, Over say flash, fast playing . My technical knowledge of bass guitars and instruments in general is now very good. I can now set up a bass and many other stringed instruments, work on frets and do small repair work and modifications to a good standard. Im hoping to further this by doing some courses very soon. Im proud of this just wish my playing talent matched.
 9. Cool little documentary. Thanks for the heads up.
 10.
A little while ago I was looking for something online, and found an old video I did with one of my bands. In truth I was hoping that this had disappeared into the ether by now, but it was posted on youTube by the band's second guitarist a few years ago (presumably after a failed blackmail attempt on another member of the band ). Recorded originally on VHS, and by my calculation around 18 years old. Sync is spectacularly bad at most points in the video, mainly because the original DAT master was used alongside some video footage of us miming it from a cassette machine that was playing back a smidge too fast... Thankfully I'm mature enough not to be too bothered about it, but I thought I'd share it all the same: https://www.youtube....h?v=HiMLy1kvTVY Anybody else feeling (wo)man enough to put up similar material for ridicule?
I gave it a watch. Has a certain charm. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
Yes, there exists some ridiculous post-punk stuff from 1979 which found its way onto YouTube. So this is how the 19-year-old me played bass. I like to think I've improved since then...
I sort of like this. A touch to much strange wailing. Cool all the same.
 11.
That'd be Mel Brown. I actually quite like a lot of what he plays in those videos but when I look at his right hand technique I actually start to get cramp myself!
What vids should i be looking at of his?.
Had to look up these videos on youtube there...that really can't be good long term for his his wrist!? With regards to the whole "there is no bad technique" I think it just varies person to person. I had to completely change my right hand technique last year because I was getting problems in my wrist from it. I would say that was bad. Sound-wise it was the same as what I do currently.
I changed my technique recently it's still not great but much improved. Certainly for me using a more correct technique has helped a lot.
 12.
Most online demo videos are nasty. Slapping, guitarists in disguise, ambient mic'ing, bass thru 15 watt practice combo, webcam microphone, DI'd fuzz pedal, bass recorded at threshold of human hearing levels... Did I miss any?
Im not fussy as i can live with certain things such as it being through a little amp, as many people practice through little amps so that's cool. I don't mind if the person isn't that greatest player, long as they are playing something skill appropriate say a simple blues, rock, funk lines gives me the gist of things. Slapping only is one that drives me nuts. I turn off or leave a comment lol. Poor mics is annoying too. Using effects all through the demo is annoying as i want to hear the actual sound. Bad recording levels. Too much talking and only a few seconds of playing.
 13. A lot of 1x15 combos have had a battering on this thread. So far i can now say the worst amp ive owned is a Carlsbro cobra 90bg 1x15 combo. Just so so bland sounding like a constant droning noise even though everything on the eq worked well it never changed the inherent blandness. And it weighed a ton, urgh that horrid grey vinyl covering. Before i sold it i had a look inside out of curiosity, a lot of made in England and even a few US parts which i thought was cool.
 14.
Does Jamerson's 'hook' count as bad bass guitar technique? Geddy Lee certainly has a very, er, aggressive right hand technique. Apparently Pattitucci doesn't mute when playing his 6, is this bad too? Given that our instrument (well the bass guitar anyway) is less than 70 years old, is there even an accepted/correct technique? If it sounds good, it is good. Reading the above, it sounds a bit po-faced, it wasn't meant to, I like the idea of holding up the great and good to scrutiny; bring it on.
Yeah there all pretty good examples. And yeah i don't believe in rules as such, i just find other players quirks or non text book form/technique interesting.
 15.
I think I'd be too anxious about mileage giving up the ghost and at first be disappointed...

Unless measured by the use of capital, of course, when the part is of good use to get already almost to the sound.
Yes but... "Often musicians and any Poser express derogatory first if you arrive by Behringer equipment"
 16. Looking for examples of players with what many would call bad technique or just bad playing in general but have made it there own and still sound good.
 17. Im asking thomann for either a new body or some sort of partial refund.
 18.
Thanks Twincam. Yeah I'm not forcing anything, and I should have mentioned in the first post that I give a quarter turn then check relief, rinse and repeat.
Remember to tune up after every adjustment then check relief.
 19. Awwww im liking that. If that was mine i would change my name to Aidan Ramone and buy a leather jacket.
 20.
I really couldn't live with that bridge, it pains me to look at it. The grain is nice and the body and that bit on the fretboard is lovely
The bridge is annoying but it works and the bass plays well. If i had paid more for the kit i would of returned it. I'm willing to bet its a one off. However gonna cover it with an ashtray cover.
That grain has come out much better than I would have expected for a basswood body. It is basswood isn't it? It looks nicely finished. Is it just an oil job? Or did you do more for the finishing. I echo y5s's comments about the paddle - but hey, it works
Yeah basswood. That's how it was totally untouched out the box. Comes coated in something that can be painted on. So with staining, lacquer or what ever then would look canny. Hmmm might keep the huge paddle for the sonic effect haha. No over the weekend its going to be shaped or at least its corners rounded. For 70 odd pounds it really is a decent bass. In feel and play ability its matches the lower range squires, has a better neck in my opinion too. I think new strings, ashtray cover for bridge, upgraded pick up to come soon. see how my younger brother gets on with playing first. I plan on getting a few more of these for peoples birthday/xmas/wedding/anniversary gifts part of my plan to oneday have a band made up of just bassists haha.
 21. Here are some quick pics taken just after initial build before painting. Taken with an ancient blackberry, but will give you a rough idea. 22. Yes but remember only up to a total of 50 euro per customer once you have had that then that's it. Best resign up again under different email lol
 23. Very quick review. Just built up a bass for my brother with one of these kits. Was an easy build. Impressed with the bass and its genuinely really nice to play and sounds really good. There was a few minor things wrong, pickguard needed a little sanding in a small area but the biggest was the bridge screw holes are lined up at a very slight angle which isn't enough to effect the bass, but visually annoying as the bridge is at slight angle. Neck is nice, frets and wood quality/feel very respectable indeed. Frets did need a minor amount of work for a 2mm action, but were good enough out the box for a 2.5mm height. Nut is cut perfect. Truss rod works fine. Pickup surprisingly nice, not a big output however. Electrics are ok seen a lot worse for a lot more money. Zero electronics noise. Cheapo strings as standard are just about serviceable. A great bass to experiment with.
 24. I actually think people have a irrational fear of truss rod adjustment. As long as your not yanking it about then really there is no danger if something breaks its more likely the truss rod had a problem in the first place. Small quarter and half turns at most are all that's needed. To answer your question different brands and models will all have a different amount of turns to get a certain amount of relief etc also the same bass with the same neck material and strings will be very slightly different too, due to the small amount of variation in the wood itself to another bit of wood. So there is no standard of how many turns!. And indeed it is normal on a double action truss rod to have that free spinning zone where the truss rod is not exerting any force either way. My current main bass is in this zone as the strings are very low tension they almost need help to put relief in the neck.
 25. I think you really can't totally judge something from one pub gig. Also as someone pointed out most of our listening these days is of very good studio recordings or indeed recordings that have had a lot of after engineering these days. I have seen great bands sound a bit crap every now and then live. It's not an excuse to be rubbish but your never going to be perfect all the time, the people who are good constantly are the studio musicians that earn a decent living or the people at the very top of the game and even then they will have an off day. And to add I don't care how good the recording gear is, it can often make you sound better or worse than you actually are.
