Out of curiosity, if it's not money that you avoid Apple for. Why is it?
I have used apple and android and in general there is definitely limitations of apple products. Not for the average user but for serious geeks and power users android due to its nature of being open is much better. For everyday use im happy with ios. Android phones are more powerful and i don't care what iphone users say they really are. Also far more variety of phones. Much the same with pc's actually. I like how apple will makes sure that apps etc will run properly on the equipment unlike many android or windows programs. I think your comment about android users being cheapskate is a bit laughable, and typical of an apple fanperson. I can't believe the b social only supports apple os's this isn't 2009. I think that is a major put off for some, like the many more android users there are in the world.
Turning up to "sound better" is just papering over the cracks. You should have more confidence in your ability to improve as a bass player.
Im always going to struggle in my left hand, it will get better but only so far. I have a physical problem in it that limits dexterity and strength, my technique is limited unfortunately, ive never moaned about it and i try just crack on with it however i do have to find ways to help me.
If it were me dude I'd be practicing through headphones to hone my technique to minimise the unwanted noise, not masking it by playing loud. I guess it depends on what you expect from your playing, personally I love my sound through headphones.
Yes of course this is the right way of doing things but some people sound crap at low volume ive heard many times turn up the volume and it comes alive. Also i think my headphones are not great at reproducing bass and can only function fairly quietly but all the other noise they do seem to amplify, they have refined my playing for sure especially recently but i don't think i will ever be one of these players who can make the instrument work at low volume. Although saying that some gentle compositions ive been working on sound fine.
You won't have to look far. I believe the same thing is called 'scoop' in modern bass circles. My GK MB500 head has a 'Contour' knob that cuts the mids and boosts bass and treble. The popular Sansamp BDDI does much the same by default.
Yes im aware of scoop, contour buttons but do they actively boost and cut depending on volume? ie boost bass, treble if you turn volume down, cut them and boost mids as you turn up the volume. As normally a contour button on most amps will just scoop at that level and it will remain a constant no matter what volume you have. Im also thinking an active contour would make small practice amps sound better?
Was the other one not a Squier body? I'm waiting for the Kay bass bodies with strat necks on them! Will he be "improving" a series of these as a hobby/business like a certain other eBayer who we shall not mention?
Like our sausage fingers friend?
I didn't see it mentioned in the article but it's something called Equal Loudness Contour: http://en.wikipedia....oudness_contour Some years ago HiFi amps often had a 'loudness' switch that progressively boosted treble and bass as you lowered the overall volume. I have a sneaky feeling that guitar amp manufacturers experimented with them as well. You can probably still find them on some kit. Hope this helps.
That's interesting. I would like to hear it in action, wonder what effect/practicality this would have in a bass amp, or in a guitar amp for that matter. And if it could make a comeback. Off to do more research...
Loud is good (that's why I have 500w, 800w and 900w amps) and has its place but if you can't play well at low volume loud is going to sound pretty bad.
I think that volume hides a lot of unwanted frequencies (in bass at least) not in bad playing as such but ive found my muting is not the best and i have a heavy fretting technique. While i can play something nice its sometimes too noisy at low volume you can hear it coming through the amp more, on turning it up i definitely sound better. Maybe a good example is flea the louder he plays the better he sounds all the unwanted noise goes or changes. But that is his style. Certainly if you sound good and clean at low volume or even unamped then you will sound great when the amp is really cranked.

Came across this while looking for answers why bass is better sounding when loud. It might explain also why, when i play loud i can't hear all the remaining overtones etc i find hard to mute. And why i hate the sound when playing through headphones. http://www.award-session.com/pdfs/Why%20Do%20Amps%20Sound%20Better%20When%20Loud.pdf So good excuse to practice loud .

Oh dear, it's gone pear shaped! Westone Warpage!

That nut looks knackered!!! and that it was causing the open string buzz more than the angle. -
Congrats on improving. I wish I was... Headphones will make your neighbours happier
I need to invest in a pair that can actually reproduce a bass note mine turn inside out at the very thought.

Last few days ive made a big leap in how well i can play. I have been putting a lot of practice in, however the big leap forward was forced upon me. I was struggling with Muting, Overtones, fretting noise, fatigue, and i was just playing a little too sloppy in general. Last month i started playing with Fender tapewounds and could not control them due to the low tension. I really like there sound so i stuck with them but with high action, i had gotten used to low action with very high tension strings. Things just didn't feel right so i lowered the action and forced myself to play with a very light touch. Still feels a little wrong to be playing so lightly. Muting is much easier, the overtones and fretting noise have improved due to my fretting hand also falling into line with a gentle approach, Fatigue has gone and my playing has tightened up, also im maybe slightly quicker. Was always scared of light touch, thinking i would get no volume, tone and the dynamics would be ruined, turns out for me it is in light touch i get better tone, volume control is on the amp, dynamics is more than just plucking hard or softer. I wish i discovered this much sooner (like 20 months ago), i guess being totally self taught does have disadvantages. Oh yeah next door has a new baby, for the first time they complained this week, this has further improved my gentle approach, because when i said "Babies love low frequency" they did not look amused!.

Easy one for me. Talking Heads - Little Creatures Really wore out the cassette i had listening to it in my teens, it will of been ten years old when i started listening to it in the mid 90s. All my mates were into Oasis etc, Talking heads was my thing. Still think its very cool you can listen to it all the way through with ease. I think its only one of very few albums i can listen to without skipping a song. Love it how it starts off with "HEY!" and the band kicking in at the same time, always gives me a kick. Bass of course provided by Tina weymouth. I remember the tape version had extended version of the lady don't mind on. (The only other albums i can stand back to front are Nirvana Nevermind and Sex Pistols Never mind the bollox, Elvis costllo's Armed forces maybe too but i have to be in the right mood)

Funny things that people say to you at gigs
Granny arrives in the middle of the stage, sort of queuing up to talk to us. Tries to attract my attention in the middle of a song, by shouting in my ear while I'm still playing. I thought she must have been from the pub and was telling us to stop as there was a fire or something. We finish the song, I say "wot is it?" and she says: "Can you play Sweet Home Alabama?" "We are a punk originals band" "But it's my favourite song" "Who's it by anyway?" ** I thought it might be a Rihanna song or something by Beck - but it turns out it's something by some old age pensioners. "I don't know, but it's my husband's favourite too" "No sorry, can you get off the stage" "Well you don't have to be so rude!" This type of thing has happened at half of our 7 or 8 gigs so far. Everything from Sex on Fire to One Direction requests. Is it me?
Old age pensioners? Didn't many of them die in a plane crash while still fairly young?. -
Honestly i have to wonder about some people i really do. It's a strange world.
-
Looks like it needs a setup and that pickup cover is a bit too big!.
-
Interesting. I think this has been a natural flaw and either occurred naturally or the shop somehow disturbed the flaw maybe by cleaning the bass. It's in an odd place it would annoy me slightly, you can try a touch up pen or maybe some sort of dark wood wax rubbed in there.
