I dunno, I'd put 'heft' at around 120Hz which is where the 'power' of a bass guitar lies, but 'punch' I'd place a bit higher up in the mids somewhere. Of course I have no idea what I'm talking about, as usual.
I somewhat agree with this. Heft is lower down in frequency and takes more power and efficiency to create. Punch is higher in frequency and probably doesn't take as much power to create. P basses are more mid range, they have punch they cut through the mix. Not to say the don't have heft also.

Cheap tuners - good value or waste of money?
Twincam replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
Well cheap tuners work, they do normally tune up ok and hold tune. But cheap tuners feel like crap to operate and can be a pain to get a good accurate tuning quickly. Also if weight is an issue they are normally not lightweight. Also they look cheap, up close that is. Cheap ones if your not bothered about the bass but want it to play. The best you can get if You care for your instrument. The westones had good tuners on I know my aria ones (same factory) are excellent. -

Edited to say Hofner and not higher although in a way I've "picked up a higher" and not been able to play at all haha
Just been looking at the other basses for sale at The Bass Gallery and spotted an early Greg Curbow American Petite 4 going for £1000... for such a renowned luthier that seems quite reasonable! http://thebassgallery.com/index.php/bass/american-petite-4.html
A well know luthier yes. And a relatively nice bass which I'm sure is made well and sounds good too etc. But it's a bit plain.

I'm a huge Jack Bruce fan. While I would not by the thumb. I would certainly buy the Aria in a flash of I had the cash or credit spare or not. And to hell with the consequences.

When I first picked up a hofner I couldn't hardly play it due to the string spacing. After not too long of practicing on it I can manage it. I thought that it made me a better player (slightly!) not that I'm very good anyway but it forced me to think and learn. Which surely is a good thing.
Hi Twincam, I will have to learn how to do it. Cheers
There known for valve noise. And any valve amp I've had that's made noises its nearly always turned out to be the valves in some way. Next something not tight or a wire rattling off something etc And as Bill said it could be the actual speakers. Im all up for using a bassman with a bass and a bass cab but in the combos the drivers and open back design ain't really up to the job. I would check any screws are right yourself. Then if no improvement try the o rings that for on the valves. These dampen the vibration somewhat. If no joy then maybe the speakers, you could try this by disconnecting the speakers and trying the amp portion with a know "good" bass cab if you are ok with wiring and ohms etc. Tracking down these noises can be a pain!
-
Still probably a tube. But not microphonic as such but rattling all the same. Make sure the retainers are tight and use some tube dampening rings. Tubes hanging upside down and near the speaker. Never understood that design its a recipe for noise. Or why they didn't have a suspension system like the wem amps.

I think it's a great idea to take up the bass. No lessons in my view needed although it does take longer to learn and its harder depending on how musical you are and how well/fast you learn, but it may be of benefit to you get your brain really working. There's YouTube vids, online info, books, basschat etc etc.

Anyone use or have used this driver?. Seems to be a good price and fairly well specced. This model has a low power handling but good enough for my needs. I don't think I've used anything with a Fane driver fitted. Are they any good?

Taken the rear speaker out and I've replaced the front driver with a better one also. Will test it at volume tomorrow. Although already it sounds better.
Limelight, Harley Benton, Sire, Maruszczyk, Fender Rumble V3 combos & at some point or another every boutique manufacturer of 1x12 cabs. Though it does seem to be the same c10 people powering through each craze before keeping the forum in business via the classifieds!
Agreed!

Indeed it does seem a pointless exercise. I got a homemade isobaric 2x10 cab in a trade. The port was all wrong! At higher volumes it would make all sorts of noise I've never felt that much velocity of air come out such a small cab. I've altered the port well 2 ports now. Ive done this a few times, it seems still too high a velocity, although calculations are saying things should be good. Although I've solved some (most) of the port noise issue. I've lost some low end, the overall responce has improved maybe. I just don't think it was a well designed cab in the first place tbh.
Why? I could see it to some extent if modeling software was a major investment, but as it's free I can't comprehend not using it.
I don't have a computer. Its ok however I think I've got it sorted.

Since I've been a member of this site I've noticed a few "flavours of the month" or things all the rage for shorter periods of time maybe. Some come and go and some stay relatively popular. My list will be relatively small. I'm interested to see others list past flavours of the month though. Remember it doesn't have to be things that have vanished, just not as talked about or as valued or as in demand.
The tuning is the same as with a standard cab. The modeling software will take into account that it's an isobaric alignment.
Unfortunately I don't have that option. I'm using maths and a very simple port tuning program. It doesn't have to be perfect but "right".
Just fretted bass with flats into the CTM15, DI box on the speaker output, much cleaner than last months EUB effort. A slightly reflective mood this time - I had a bit of a headache! https://www.dropbox....noodle.mp3?dl=0
I cannot listen to it

In an isobaric design (Cone to magnet), to port the rear do you just measure the area as normal and tune the port length as standard?

I had a few that stunk! A antibacterial kitchen spray works well (not the bleach bathroom types) a few sprays over a few days have worked. Bicarbonate soda in could also work as your missus suggests.
Imagine a car forum where someone says "I want a 2.0l saloon car to replace my 1.2l hatchback". Should you list a load of potential 2.0l cars or should you point out that you can get more power and more economy out of a modern direct injection turbocharged 1.4l engine, and more space/practicality from a compact MPV, to help the buyer make a better informed decision?
I agree fully with this.

Post a pic of you can.

Could obviously be one high fret near the bottom of the neck hence the buzz all over. And/Or Could be a ski jump has developed. This can happen gradually over time but because of the tiny clearances involved you can notice it all of a sudden if your playing style is robust. Also what cab happen is after changing strings the neck bends one way, then the other this can make a fret that wasn't totally secure (for various reasons) move that tiny amount to cause buzz. At .013 and 2.5mm you should not get any fret buzz at all really some very hard pluckers could yes but it seems that. This happens a lot on bolt on necks. Although it can happen to set and neck through construction. I'm typing this on a mobile so can't see where your based. If your in the north east I will happily sort out any issues.

How many times have you broken a string?
Twincam replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
While playing never! While tuning up 4 times so I voted for 4 times. Twice with new strings twice with old strings.
