1. That money will get you an excellent condition used: Stingray 4 Fender MIA Precision - new model (post 2008) Fender MIA Jazz (ditto) Lakland 4 string (DJ/BG/JO) If you don't like it - you'll not lose anything/much moving it on.......
2.
Bump
I've a Ray I would consider trading for this - unfortunately it weighs more than your Precision at 10lbs 9.5lbs aint bad for a late 70's P I believe. Unless you get a nice trans Ash Ray a lot of Rays (notice I didn't say all so MM fanatics don't pounce) with solid finishes come up in the 9.5 lb category
3. Nicely mental.... The guitarist I've worked with for the last 15 years had gone through literally dozens of guitars in that time. However, one thats always stayed close and been used on most gigs is a US Charvel white strat shaped neck thru thing. Must be good then.
4.
Yep, they're good. Even my OLP has one! My Vigier's better- no truss rod at all!!
And the one on the Streamline......it's there but never need to use it
5.
Not quite! Boffin head on now... Weight is not subjective. It is absolute unless either a). the mass of the bass changes or . the earth's gravitational pull changes. As I assume that neither are about to happen, then the weight is a constant. However, the perception of weight is definitely subjective! Takes off pedant's hat. WoT, that bass looks like your colour! Not fancy it mate?
Being a complete assh.....pedant, the weight will change as the gravitational pull will vary relative to the distance from the centre of the Earth. So it will weigh less at the Equator than the Poles should you be on a world tour. I'm assuming the bass isn't radioactive, if so it will also loss wieght with time tho the rate will depend on the species half live(s) and the emmission type (alpha being faster than beta being faster than gamma). I'll bugger iff now and let normal service be resumed.....
6.
Its the same on Sadowsky's I've never loosened my strings to do it though...........have i been doing it wrong ? haha
Don't think so - I never loosen the strings off. I usually have the tuner connected while doing it to make sure nothing strange is happening...
7.
Could I interest you with a spector euro 4lx http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry983708
Sorry T, I've done the 'Warwick' thing in the past (no insult intended) and find that, other than my beloved Status (which is more of a comfort thing) I'm pretty trad and like my MM/Fender shapes and sounds. Cheers, all the same.
8.
I've no doubt it is. there's just something about the shape, the neck and tone of the SR5s and the way they play that I love more than any other bass. I've always been happy with the single H but I'd love to try an HS for comparisons sake. I could live without the humbucker in series for the extra tones I could get from the single coil I'm definetely after another, this time with a rosewood board. I'll likely need to sell the L2K to fund it but it'll be worth it as I'm happiest playing my SR5
Think I'd like to try an SR5 HS for fretless, don't get me wrong the single H is pretty versatile but I bet it's a killer if you can blend in a bit of neck pup beef to back up the mwwwaaaahhhh.
9.
This is my old bass! Lovely warm and punchy sound!!
Cheers Jim, I've a feeling it'll be staying with me a while longer.
10.
One of the times you put this up I will give in! Would you trade for another EBMM plus the cash your way obviously?
Pete, you know enough about Rays to know that it would be pointless to trade it for a standard EB
11.
i totally agree with you about it being the best Stingray ever - the mahogany body gives it added growl. i sold mine for exactly the same reason: fantastic bass, very well made, sounds fantastic but I don't want to take it to my local to gig with it. Fine if you are playing big stages or doing a lot of studio work well out of the sweaty reach of the anebriated and unpredictable
So you understand my pain!!! Doing a lot of Jamnights and rough pubs at the mo. I've just got a cheap Jazz for the real toilets but find that my Status is getting far too much use for everything else and could do with a similar quality backup/alternative.
12. My dream fretless but unfortunately destined to remain that way. Have a bump from a fellow citizen of the socialist republic...
13. Pete sorted me out with a spot on Jazz a like for jamnights. Always a pleasure Pete. The Barefaced cab is excellent too - might have to look for one......
14. Bought a Lakky DJ5 from him a couple of years back, good guy and strongly recommended - even took the bass back to check it over when I whinged about pickup buzz (turned out to be my 'energy effecient' lighting).
15. Well it's taken a while to replace the Ray 4H Fretless that I (foolishly) sold a few months back believing I wanted a Jazz (again.....I will never learn). I was unable to snag exactly what I was looking at (price mainly......had to cut a few corners, credit crunch and all that) but I saw a nice Ray5H unlined fretless on evil bay and decided to take a punt. It's a 1998 trans red and in remarkably good nick for the year. It's needed a little rod tweak to get the action how I like it and I'm going to have to change the Roto flats (and probably the matt black pg at some point for a nice abalone or black pearl once I've made my mind up whether 5 string F'less is for me) for some D'addarios. Anyway here's 'Big Red' along with 'Red' my rarely used 30th.
16. Bump for a cracking looking Ray. To those who haven't had a special edition or anniversary Ray they do tend to be a notch up in quality over a standard and generally well worth the price premium.
17. Both Rays are getting a little tweak tonite, meanwhile the Status will sit in the corner with its 3 year old truss rod 'hymen' still intact.
18. I've generally found oiled neck MMs to need more truss rod tweaks than say a precision. Never really bothered me too much as it's quick and easy to do plus MM necks seem to settle quickly on tweaking.
19. I'd agree with above bit say £800 should be looked at as a minimum, on a good day it (in this condition) maybe up to £1k. I think the headed generally do a little worse cash wise than headless.
20. IIRC my old 2004 MIA P bass and that last few Ray4s I've owned had similar neck profiles width wise - maybe the Rays were slightly shallower front to back? Not sure about MIM - never owned a MIM P.
21.
can anyone tell me the type of wood that would have been used for the body in '93...I'm guessing at Ash but not sure!
At that time I think it was about 50/50 ash and poplar (or very rarely alder). Trans colours were nearly always ash. Was this one of the first ones with the oiled neck? I had a 1990 a few years back which maybe was one of the last with a satin laquer all over. Lovely bass btw.
22.
My beloved 30th anni SR4, just celebrated our two year anniversary. Love it to bits, one of my all time favourite basses.
+1 My 30th is the best Ray I've owned. Not the lightest but a tone to die for - the mahogany body definitely changes the base sound. After a few months of searching a new MM will be joining the MTB stable in the near future......
23. And if so it was mine also. Lovely example of the breed at a cracking price
24. I'd try and get a go on a Ray or Status with a Status Graphite fretless neck before you go down this route if you can. I did this conversion on a Jazz bass and couldn't really get on with it. I guess it's partly a question of technique but I always ended up with a 'clacky' result even on flats. I know some people have gone down the rosewood board route (on the graphite neck) with their Status fretless to avoid this.
