1. No comments on the love em or hate em looks, Bongos are great basses....end of. Nice score MotH
2.
Pre EB's are.
And 30th's And Classics
3. You're just as bad as I am with my 30th Martin. Don't even think of selling it again.........
4.
No? Don't get me wrong, I'd love a nice 70s Jazz, but I just couldn't ever afford to buy one, and more to the point, I refuse to part with the money people are asking for them. A grand for a JV Squier?? No chance.
I'm with you on that one. Had a 57 P bass JV - first issue, it was a lovely bass but I wouldn't have one over say a new US one. I've been half thinking about a beat up 70's Fender but I'd be just as happy with a relic'd Sandberg.
5. Will this be a 'local' sale only Mart?
6. Cheers, that's about what I thought. Deals on fretless Jazz not as easy to come by as fretted.
7. I've been trying hard to pick up a nice used Ray/Sterling or US Jazz fretless for the last couple of months - all to no avail, must be in short supply or much loved by their owners. So, reluctantly I'm loooking at going new. The best price I've found for a Ray/Sterling is c.£1200 (out of my budget I'm afraid) and £945 for a new model US Jazz (just about doable at a push). Anybody know anywhere that can beat those? Cheers, Mart
8.
My Streamline withstood a 900+ mile drive across France stuffed in the boot of my car. In its soft bag. In the height of summer. With no issues at all. In fact, it's not had any stability issues at all. Not that my Vigier's had any issues. It just won't fit in the boot of my car!
+1. Never had to touch the truss rod on my Streamline even when I changed to higher gauge rounds. I can't really tell the difference between wood and graphite on fretted (other than the very evev tone and lack of dead spots). I think electronics has a part to play, eg the Strealine is noticeably warmer than the S2 as Rich (otpj) demonstrated to me when I bought it from him. On fretless though the difference is very apparent to me, I find resin boards to be too harsh and clacky with my (poor) technique.
9. Bob, looks like the body could be Spanish cedar. My old perception was cedar (with a walnut top) and looked very much like this. It was lightweight too - about 7.5lbs. Might be more info on the reverse side of the control cavity cover.
10. if this were a fretless I'd buy it mate, case or no case! I bought a new mm back in the 90s that came without the case - some dealers occasionally 'separate' them. No biggy I only ever use HSCs for storage anyway. A £60 gator case is plenty good enough for that. Good luck with the sale.
11.
Ah! Its a Series 2000 model - from around the time Rob started doing the `slimline' neck moulding, ie the neck is not the full thickness of the body at the heel. I wonder who bought it????!!!!!!!!! Mwahahah! Nick
Seeing as I missed out on this....don't suppose you've got a nice MM fretless from your 'fence' to part with
12.
I somehow think Dave may well be from the dark side...In which case he will not appreciate niceties. Also as I have now sold my SR he may well choose not to talk to me ever..... Anyway this thread led to a bit of a jape......with a smattering of funduggery chucked in for good measure... Im off to Chicago in the morning. ..I hope they are more fun there
Used to spend a lot of time in the States. Generally find them to be far better mannered than we are over here. As with all rules there are always exceptions.
13.
sorry, matter of time till what ? and please dont suppose things about me,i came here to see if i could learn somthing about sandberg basses and this is what i found. And really sorry about the manners but it would seem that you all had given up on them. and punctuate ! really is that the problem is it.I would like to hang around i even just found a thread with great deals on sandbergs ;-)
Swanbrook, we seldom bite (except when goaded ). The site is generally well mannered and civilised otherwise, the fact that the Mod's haven't stepped in and erased you from history (sorry Tino) is testement to that. I apologise if I have drawn incorrect conclusions about you. However you appeared to have drawn a very hasty conclusion regarding the individuals on this site after less than a day of being a member on the forum. If you can get over your [apparent] anger and search the other hundreds of threads (there are more than this one - honest) for the information you seek I'm sure you'll find it all a more pleasant experience. Welcome to the forum.....honestly and without prejudice.....
14. I nearly pushed the button on this one meself. It was originally £495 on BIN, while I was thinking about it the seller upped it to £595 BIN. Still a bargain IMHO but made me think harder and before you know it, it had gone!
15. It was only a matter of time.................guess we're not on your Christmas card list then I suppose you won't hang around for long. Pity you may have learned something, even if it was only some manners (and maybe the ability to punctuate).
16. I understand Mr Shuker routinely does refins now - prices on his website: http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/repairs.htm
17. IMHO a lot of the nuances between different basses can be resolved with clever application of onboard and offboard EQing. Even an EB 3 band Ray can be made to sound as smooth as silk in the right hands and a pre-EB to sound like a ropey dog in the wrong hands.
18.
Brilliant post GW. Very good job of expressing your opinion and also giving the reasons for it. Nice one. However, IMHO none of that excuses rudeness, especially in a conversation between what is essentially a retailer a customer. Plenty of people do great things for charity and manage not to be complete nobs at the same time.
I think that was essentially where I was coming from at tthe start of this thread. It appeared to me that BP was abusing his position by belittling a customer who had made a post on a public (albeit company owned/run) forum. Not big and not clever.
19.
cheers guys. but why the difference in the weight between the two SR4 H 2EQ I have held?
EB have used ash, poplar and occasionally alder for rays over the years. Transparent finishes are almost exclusively ash. I've had a few solid colours and these have always been heavier than trans - maybe they were denser poplar.
20. Sorry I've not tacked this into the existing thread regarding the new (very pretty) MM roasted neck 'specials' but I'm old and couldn't find it. Anyhow I was just dwelling in the underworld that is the EBMM forum and came across this: http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-...e-necks-12.html Felt really sorry for the poor guy who very politely questioned the credibility of the claims made regarding the stability etc of the roasted necks saying that unless the claims could be backed up or substantiated in some way then the claims fell into the category of marketing. The poor guy was lambasted by Big Pillock himself and accused of calling him a liar yadda yadda yadda. I guess this is no surprise to any of us that have frequented that forum but it just goes to show how some people can treat customers (this poor guy had stated he had been a customer since 1984 - I suppose that might not be the case for much longer). I wouldn't expect the same treatment from the likes of Rob Green, Chris May or John Shuker if I posed a question (even if it was dumb). Well I will probably always own an MM, and will probably buy another one but that is despite Sterling Ball rather than because of him. Then again maybe it's time to sell the 30th and buy a pre-EB out of spite. Rant over........ No small creatures were harmed during the making of this missive.
21. I occasionally have a dabble on the bay when I'm looking for something specific that I can't find on here. I've noticed it is getting 'thinner' tho. I've been looking for a fretless Ray or Sterling for a couple of months and not a single private (read - sensibly priced) example has come up. Quite a few 'dealer' based but all at the top end of the market.
22. Pretty much with the above on this one. I've not found any difference between late 80's, 90's and 00's other than it was more commonplace to have nicely figured maple necks on the 80's and 90's. Soundwise and playability they're pretty much the same IMHO. Oh and I guess I'm with Pete on the new nut (on 2006 on basses) - I prefer it for the intonation but you have to think harder about fretting at the 1st as a bit more pressure is needed (tho I think string selection may have an influence here) than the standard nut. Also as Pete said the anniversaries add something to the mix, especially the Ray4 20th and 30ths - again IMHO.
23.
Unfortunately not. Bit gutted you cant upgrade a little to a hardcase or slightly different colour.
Story of my life.......................the quest for the fretless MM (now in its 3rd month) continues.
24. If this includes Fretless I might be up for a punt.
25.
'fraid not. I'm over t'other side, Broomhill way and I dont get out much (work, kids, work, work etc). Although, if you were passing this way with your 30th aniversary then I'd stick the kettle on............
Well if Daughter 2 gets into Sheffield Uni this September you never know, Cheers, Mart
