  1. Amazing, you've nailed the tone. Did you do the guitar part as well? Mick Ronson's I believe...
  2. Sounds and looks great & I want one of those leopard skin jackets that the sax player has on!
  3. I've played double-bass in what we referred to as an "Americana band", playing covers of Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, as well a lot of UK songs done in a similar style. I really like this style of music (whatever you'd call it) and it works so well with DB - you can really showcase the unique DB tone, especially when you don't have drums, or just have light percussion. St Bonnaventures in Bristol used to be the South West venue on this circuit, for roots type music, I saw Sarah Jaroz there once - acts used to come over from US/Canada and tour round this and similar venues in the UK. Sadly St Bonns is no more.... Good luck with your project.
  4. "its doing all the English pop bands of that decade," - plus a few Scottish and Irish looking at the setlist 😁
  5. I didn't know what bass it was, guessed some type of P, thanks for sharing. Heading off to explore some of the Roxy Music back catalog with these guys... 😁
  6. Has to be either Danny Thompson for me Or electric, this 😁
  7. I have same same bass with the jazz setup from Bassbags. Still a rock solid gigging bass after seven years 😎
  8. Google also supports multiple accounts so you can have separate calendars for different bands and merge into a single calendar view for all of your bands. Life saver...
  9. The NS Design Omni Bass can be played vertically and horizontally like a normal bass guitar, and has the same neck length. I don't know about the neck width though. If you prefer the longer double-bass length neck, the NS Double Bass might work?
  10. I'd just sand it flat with fine sand paper then use a strip of wood or cork as suggested to shim it and get a tight fit.
  11. When I started playing DB less and wasn't keeping up the hand strength I put some Presto Nylon super lights on - they felt a bit like elastic bands tension-wise at first, but I quickly got used to them and I found I could play two 45 minute sets without getting hand-ache. Controversial I find, as some players think you have to have heavier strings to be a proper player (and they might be right ;-). Good luck with the playing.
  12. I like the tone that this guy gets on a Marcustio - don't know what the signal chain is, but the mids & highs sound great - lows lack the DB frequencies.
  13. They bumble along with nearly 3 million monthly listeners and a couple of songs exceeding 140 million streams. Yes pop music as in short for popular, as opposed to unpopular music, e.g. my music 🙂
  14. Blue Lagoon is the only Bristol bar I know that does party bangers and is large enough, and yes you need to get to know the booker. It's good for load in/out as well.
  15. Danke schön 😉
  16. Incidentally I looked at Thomann and the Spiros say Light on the packet instead of Weich. I know Weich means Light but wasn't sure why they've translated the weight, do you think they're exactly the same?. Looked elsewhere and most UK places are out of stock. Thanks
  17. I've not had this problem with Obligatos or any strings, but maybe it depends on how much playing you do. If I play infrequently and my fingers get sore, I wrap masking tape round them just once or twice, just enough to protect the pads but keep the feel of the strings.
  18. I used to have a stentor 1950, great gigging bass. Thomastik: Spirocore Weichs are great strings and last forever, and for extra lightness some people use the solo set instead of orchestra set. I used the orchestra set on my Stentor. I currently have Presto nylon wounds on, which are really easy on the hands, but have more of a gut-like thud than a growl I’d say.
  19. Great question - I've heard the same term used to describe double bass strings, and never knew what it meant either. I'd say there are only four sounds/tones - trebly, bassy, and muddy... and Jean Jacques Burnel. 😉
  20. Saw this at the cinema last year - amazing!!! a bit heavy on the gospel at times, but loved it. Steve Wonder is awe inspiring, 5th Dimension and the rest great.
  21. I'd go for one or the other but not both. My Ibanez has side dots in the usual places - 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, where the fret would be, and dots on the boards just above where your finger should be so that you can still see them when you position your hand, and in the right light you can see very thin lines on the board, in fact I only noticed these the other weekend when it was sunny. I find the side dots handy to glance at now and again if I'm moving up and down a lot. Never used the dots on the board, or the lines. Seems to generate a lot of opinion about what's best, but TBH you can always ignore the dots/lines if you don't need them.
  22. Exactly the type of advice I needed @BigRedX, appreciated! Sounds like it was a pain back in the 80s - I hope your royalties are still rolling in 💰💰💰 I'll perform it at open mics as well so will be doing as you advise.
  23. I registered with PRS a couple of years back when I wrote a couple of songs but didn't use it (at the time, couldn't figure out the difference between PPL, PRS, and MCPS and all that, but the online PRS instructions seem to have improved a lot & I can understand them). Does anyone simply register a work in PRS to copyright it? I'm not expecting a huge income from the song (unless Taylor Swift wants to record it), but I don't want anyone to rip it off. I'll probably just put it out on Youtube with a home made video. Advice or tips welcome. Thanks, Pete
