  1. I like Presto Nylonwounds for a gut-like tone and feel, and warmer under the hands.
  2. I've also noticed loads of similar extremely cheap EUBs on fleabay with obvious photo of high end NS Design uprights. The auction sites need to do more checking...
  3. That's class mate, great spectacle!
  4. Saw them at Bristol Beacon a couple of weeks back. I didn't recognize what Nick was playing, and was expecting to be able to hear the bass clearly at this venue (famous for its acoustics), but although he played great, the tone I was getting near the front at the left of the stage was muddy and uninspiring. There was one intro or ending where the just the bass was played but even then I didn't think it came across that well. Shame because a punchy bass tone goes so well with Chrissie's songs. Or maybe I need my ears cleaned out...
  5. Hugh, I bought my Stentor 1950 on the basis of watching a video that you did about the same model - helped me immensely. 😁
  6. Agree with TheRev about the Stentor 1950. Also a slightly smaller body than most and light. Was my first bass, great for getting round pubs n bars 😀
  7. I’d suggest buying a used one that’s already been setup and is gig ready, preferably with an adjustable height bridge so that you change the string type without needing to involve a luthier. If you do want to buy new, somewhere like Bass Bags have a wide range to try out and have an in house luthier to set them up, which helps. your budget is easily enough for a gigable bass & pickup, probably with a carved top and laminate body. Good luck!
  8. The trick is, to go light BEFORE your back's knackered ! 😁
  9. I want that custom Datsun-inspired orange one !!! Looks and sounds epic. And i find this guy really entertaining.
  10. I had vocal lessons for 18 months a couple of years back to get good enough to do BVs - I used to call them primal scream sessions, as it took a long time for me to shrug off my old way of singing. If you can find a good teacher I reckon that would fast track you to getting where you want to be. But youtube has tons of great stuff. I never thought I'd be standing up in a room full of hipster strangers and singing one of my own songs at my age, but I've done a few open mics, I'd say go for it!!
  11. Agreed he's an incredible drummer and artist. I don't know who was playing sax, Youssef spoke quietly when he introduced stuff, but I'm pretty sure he said something about the sax player being from Jamaica and was maybe new. Like I said the overall sound was great, and I could hear the bass clearly, which is the most important thing right 😉
  12. Went to Forwards fest in Bristol at the weekend and was watching Yusef's set and enjoying the bass - tasteful, non-flashy, BB cut through but was slightly muddy sounding amplified that loud - didn't realize it was Rocco until the end of the gig when Yusef introduced him.
  13. I’d def leave them on, no reason to change and I bet they sound great. Good luck with the gigs.
  14. Cheers mate, yes will factor that into the decision making @Raslee if you’re ever up Bristol way you’re welcome to tryout my Sandberg TM4 SL - it’s just under 7 lbs, and has the black label pickups. Pm me if you need more details. I might be putting up for sale soon, full disclosure, as I mainly play fretless these days. Good luck with finding a lighter bass, cheers !
  15. Being able to multi-track recordings - agreed that's a fantastic reason for doing it. Make your own music 🎵
  16. It's way easier to get into the 'music business' these days - anyone can do it from a laptop without any record companies, promoters, or studios. Maybe that's partly why music streams have been devalued. That's not to say that it's easy to make a living from music. When AI takes over the world, I'm sure live performance will still be valued, even more so (at least that's what I hope!). Having said that, I'm going with my sisters to see Abba Voyage hologram show this Autumn, which is supposed to be brilliant.
  17. Saw them in Bristol a few weeks back, the sound was great and the bass cut through the mix perfectly. Don't know if it was the same bass but it was definitely a Yamaha BB.
  18. I've not tried the heavier version but I have a TM4 superlight, and I'm told it is brighter, and that's why it has different pickups. As said here you can easily change the tone. I have Fender 90-50 flats on mine to provide a more vintage tone.
  19. Amazing, you've nailed the tone. Did you do the guitar part as well? Mick Ronson's I believe...
  20. Sounds and looks great & I want one of those leopard skin jackets that the sax player has on!
  21. I've played double-bass in what we referred to as an "Americana band", playing covers of Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, as well a lot of UK songs done in a similar style. I really like this style of music (whatever you'd call it) and it works so well with DB - you can really showcase the unique DB tone, especially when you don't have drums, or just have light percussion. St Bonnaventures in Bristol used to be the South West venue on this circuit, for roots type music, I saw Sarah Jaroz there once - acts used to come over from US/Canada and tour round this and similar venues in the UK. Sadly St Bonns is no more.... Good luck with your project.
  22. "its doing all the English pop bands of that decade," - plus a few Scottish and Irish looking at the setlist 😁
