1.
I can't afford a music stand as my band gigs for free because we have no talent. Being talentless means we can't remember how any songs go so we don't play anything. It's an unbreakable cycle but we're all happy because we're in a rock band and the punters are happy because they can hear themselves speak. Sometimes it seems silly but I learnt it all on Basschat so it must be the way to go.
Next you will be telling us you don't need to use a compressor
2. A good quality music stand like one below can double up as a laptop stand. The top part will lie back flat or at an angle with the lip stopping the lap top from sliding off. We use one for our PA mixer http://www.terralec.co.uk/other_stands/cobra_adjustable_music_stand/33216_p.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjwnv27BRCmuZqMg_Ddmt0BEiQAgeY1l2-KMgRUhUvo4pLyoleMr0mcdwCtto6gNJvTUxXpi7AaAs9O8P8HAQ
3. I started a thread on this last year and it ran for over 10 pages!! There are lots of opinions 😀
4. I have 2 of those and run them with my Hartke LH500. Really like the sound of them together. I also think they look stunning as a medium sized stack.
5. I heard he was playing through the new hartke class D head tx600. Anyone notice?
6.
Your maths is right; each lamp will draw 1.25 A, so you'll be needing either an 1.5 A psu for each lamp, or a single psu able to support a minimum of 2.5 A. Running both from the 1.5 psu will overload it, and could cause trouble. It would be normal to have a little bit of margin, so I'd say a 3A psu would be better if you're running both from the same one. On the other hand, separate psu's would be more 'fail-safe', and could make for better cable runs.
Great. Thanks Dad for the reassurance. Yes separate runs would be better anyway. Although they don't flash it's a nice compact system. Just need to decide what colour gels to use as I have a selection to try.
7. I have acquired 2 x 12v LED work lamps which are very bright and as they are also quite small they are perfect to put one on top of each PA speaker to light us up. I've attached some coloured gels to the front of them and although they don't flash I've basically got enough light to illuminate a decent sized pub stage for nothing. However I'm a bit confused with watts and amps so want to ensure I'm doing it safely. The lights are 15w each (5 x 3W leds) and have a positive and negative wire coming out. I have connected each of them to a 12v power supply from maplin which is rated at 1.5amp load but I am unsure if this light is too powerful for the power supply. Ideally I want to connect both lights to the same power supply and thus only have one plug. I was always under the impression you divided watts by volts to get the amps which means a 15w light at 12v is 1.25 amps but am confused whether this makes a difference now it's connected to a 240v mains plug. Maplin do power supplys with much higher amp ratings but they start getting expensive. Any electrical help would be appreciated.
8. Bruce Foxton. Love his tone on Eton Rifles.
9. Only been in there once for some cabs and whilst I am very happy with purchase the experience of being in there was not good. I just felt like I was in the way and annoying them. There were two people working there and it took them ages to come out of the office into the shop. I popped my head round the door and they weren't even on the phone , just sat at computers. They knew i was there as they heard me walk in. The one thing that really wound me up was when I came to pay via card, the one guy passed me the card reader without looking up from his computer screen. Made no eye contact with me at all during sale. Would never dream if returning.
10. Spread out I think is better. Song order is usually determined by the tempo rather than the artist.
11.
Brass used to set those demonic devices off, even unmic'd ! Bass could be loud as you liked I thought they had disappeared from use, all gathered together and ritually destroyed ? LD
I think there are a few pubs that still have to have them but they are usually connected to one mains socket and the landlords tell you to plug in elsewhere and turn a blind eye.
12.
Your Dad comes to your gigs?
😁😁
13. It was always a chicken tikka madras on way home when I was younger. Now by the time I've loaded the Pa back in the house it's a cup of tea and a bag of crisps.
14. I have a right handed one and it is just over 7lbs and is the lightest bass I've had. I saw one in a shop and that was very light but I found it cheaper on line at dv247. When it arrived I was pleased to see it was the same weight. Very nice basses to play too.
15. It does concern me how music is generally listened to these days from a bass perspective. Cheap TV speakers, mobiles, tablets and laptops. None of which bring out any bass. My nephew who loves listening to music plays it all through his tablet in his bedroom. He's totally oblivious to the lack of bass.
16. I see this a lot where people want a p bass with a jazz neck. I can't understand why squier don't offer this as I am sure they would sell.
17. It seems the average rate then for a pub is £250. I think this is about right and although some might disagree I think they should not need to pay anymore if they are a mid sized pub. With an average of 100 punters watching a band and spending between £10 and £20 each the takings will be around £1500 which does not leave a lot when all costs are taken out. It's in all of our interests for pubs with live music to remain profitable and stay in business. I agree busier pubs should pay more but at the end of the day they have to run a business.
18. Midlands area is around £200-£250 for a couple of hours. I think that's a fair price but would not go any lower. We are only a 3 piece though so less people to share it with
19. I love playing bass. I have constant GAS, enjoy looking at bass related pictures and always listen out for the bass in music. However all of this is topped off with the enjoyment of being in a working band. I was thinking the other day that God forbid my band was to end, would I still continue to play bass at home without being in a band? The simple answer is no I probably wouldn't unless I joined another band. To me, all of the enjoyment of playing bass comes from doing it live in a band. Anyone else only enjoy playing as part of a band?
20. Depending on how England do they may be playing 2 Saturdays later too.
21. My ideal would be a p bass with a jazz neck and am surprised by the comments so far how popular that would be. I am sure it's been discussed many times why there isn't one readily available from fender It would be nice to see a squier one (IE in my price range)
22. It's the one downside of active monitors. Spilt beer can be a bit of a problem
23. I think playing pubs you have to expect gigs like this. We play stuff from the Jam and the who so can often get rowdy. I personally like them as long as they don't start trying to grab the mics. Just take care of your monitors and watch out for people falling into mic stands!
24. Really glad I've read this thread. I always played bass with a pick mainly as I also play guitar. I've tried over last few months to play with fingers partly because I've got the feeling (some of it on here) that proper bass players use their fingers Not only have I struggled to get an even rhythm but I also have to keep messing with my eq when I switch back to pick. After reading these comments I'm going to go back to pick full time and work on other areas of my playing. Feel quite relieved
25. As long as the amp is 4ohms and both cabs are 8ohms which I am pretty sure they are then you will be fine. Using both will mean you are getting full use of the amp but don't expect the volume difference to be hugely different to just the 410 on its own.
