Price drop to £850 Hi guys I'm having a bit of a clear out and consolidating some gear which doesn't get used enough. This is one of the best fretless basses I've had, but I don't play it enough - so given my current financials I have to let it go. I'll need to keep tabs on it so I can maybe buy it back one day! So here it is - a very rare series 1 Vigier Arpege fretless. Built before they started using/recording serial numbers properly but estimated to be around 1985. This is the first series made by Patrice Vigier, before they started experimenting with Carbon necks. Instead, the neck has a brass laminate running along under the fingerboard for rigidity, as well as a truss rod. Although the bass lives in a hard case in the office, my wooden necked basses occasionally need adjustment for seasonal variations - but this never does. I've literally tuned it once. Most of the hardware is Vigier's own; the bridge in particular is an interesting design. The pickups are made for Vigier by Benedetti. They're single coils and very powerful. They have an unusual 'tabletop' shape which looks great. The pre-amp is very unusual, consisting of a master vol with pull boost, series/parallel switch which actually processes some useful sounds, a boost/cut knob married to a Q filter and a passive tone. Also a pickup switch (front, middle, back) and a 'passive output' (Active output on the side of body) I'm not actually sure of the body wood but similar basses at the time were made of Walnut. It's a neck through and very comfortable. You can hear it here (wait for the fretless to cut in) where I'm suing the rear pickup only for that really tight bumpy growl, which this bass excels at. With both pickups it has a very open and warm sound. It comes without a case unfortunately but I would prefer to meet the buyer anyway at somewhere convenient. I'm in York but happy to travel to meet. The train to London is quick and easy, and/or I wan meet somewhere along the M1. My parents are in Oxford so it could be an excuse to see them, too. So I'm very flexible. Weight: 4.8kg (approx, bathroom scales!) I feel like some vids are a little sloppy (not that I could do better) but it's also due to the way it's been recorded, I think. For ages they only came out of one channel. Surely got to be worth setting up a more pro recording area for demos. However I do prefer the more groove playing demos to the super fast and/or upper fret melodic show-off type things put out by many others. I don't think the demos are pointless at all, they give you a real good idea what the bass sounds like. The vids are hit and miss, some recorded really quietly and others out of phase or something, but this is an OK one that gives a good idea of the sound. You can, at least, her the characterising 'plink' of the G string (especially at the end)

I found having an amp around the house was a bit depressing - it takes up a lot of room and is completely a reminder of the gigs you used to play and often they can lose money much faster than an instrument can. I also don't like playing amps at home; they shake items in the room and everyone can hear you (probably even next door) so I cannot concentrate! So my advice is sell the amp, invest some time in deciding which bass to keep or have a bit of a cleanse and buy one great bass, then spend some of the money you've made on a really good home headphone based setup (my advice would be something like a Helix and a bassboard) - that way you can still play at home yourself in total bliss, along with music or whatever. It's a bit of an escape. And try not to over-analyse it; sometimes I don't play bass for weeks, but I still have a certain satisfaction that I love my gear and enjoy reading about gear etc online. Often the groove takes me when I least expect it, normally when I should be hoovering or something, and when you don't feel like you're forcing it, it's a great feeling. If you still miss being in a band, why not try some of the online collaboration sites where you can download tracks that need bass and send them back? Personally I get my kicks from playing along with music that I stumble across and spend hours jamming to them. When it comes to seeing things, it's far too easy to attach sentimentality to stuff which really are just objects. I recently sold a few watches that were totally blown away by a random punt on eBay for a watch about a tenth of the price of my most expensive. For a while I couldn't sell them because I thought 'but I wore that here' or 'I bought this then' but why should that not just be a nice memory? Who will benefit from me keeping it and telling them about it later? Nobody. I am very much a 'one item' person; rather than having a collection of watches or basses I tend to prefer to have one, which is 'me'. Obviously when it comes to bases that can mean one four, one five, one fretless, one half scale, one white, one black, one with single coils, one with humbuckers... Also echo Fozza's comment above - there's nothing wrong with tasing and chatting about basses even if you haven't played in a while. So stick around

Hi mate. They should be better configured now to appear as they used to. We’ll spend more time perfecting them over the coming days. We’ve actually been using Adsense for years but recently had to change the account stuff hence the weirdness earlier. A pop up blocker will certainly remove them and hide the ads but lose us revenue. They aren’t a main funding source for us (hence the decision to charge for sale ads instead) so you can use one if you prefer, especially if you have a sub already there’s no need to feel bad Now we’re up to date with it we will start to config them so maybe users with a sub will see no ads and guests see more etc but we’ll see what’s possible. Sorry our fault, we were waiting for Google to update something and I had an email from them this morning - I didn't realise by default they give you 'auto ads' all over the bloody place. We're configuring them to be as they were before at the moment.

My fault - we had to do some configuring of Google Adsense yesterday and haven't had a chance to 'optimise' it yet. Google of course give you the full beans as soon as they can until you tell them otherwise so we'll fix it later today.
