I do a lot of prep work for my students including sustained chords to practise scales over, drum grooves at various tempos in various styles and chord progressions. Its great for those who don't have access to logic or cubase. I would do it if there were resources I could use too, though. And I'd like to know how people were using them and if it helped. Dan

My brother was a drummer so I'd always rob his kit. One day I got asked to find a drummer for my mate's band but couldn't be bothered so I suggested myself (having never really played in a band properly). Very quickly I was practising regularly in my room to get good enough to go where the band wanted to. That band ended up being the most successful band I have been in, with decent promo vids on TV and good tours. I joined for a laugh, but took it seriously when I was in there. I'm an ego-maniac, so I don't mind saying I can wipe the floor with most drummers I know (most are rubbish). I use decent technique and put a heavy emphasis on good, simple playing and don't play too loud; infact, I'm tracking all the drums for my new band (as well as horns, bass, guitar and synth) so I can hand decent demos out to other players. As far as I'm concerned, every bass player needs an understanding of the rhythm section as a whole (kit, piano, guitar) to be able to contextualise their own playing. Dan

You could always spend a while with Sibelius, converting the notation to notation & tablature. Do this with a bass on your lap and you'll gradually be learning through it too!! I teach all my students with notation and tab as although reading is a VERY important skill to have, sometimes you can focus elsewhere and still learn a lot; tackling notation when you make the conscious decision too rather than having to to learn a line. I played one in Liverpool not long ago at the Dolphin shop. The set up was god-awful (which surprised me as they're usually pretty good), but they tweaked it there and then and I was pleasantly surprised (Also tempted to throw a DarkStar in there too!!!!) DaN

Hey Mike. C Mixolydian is a major scale with a flat 7: C D E F G A Bb C. [There's an interval of a diminished 5th (same number of semitones) between your third (E) and your b7 (Bb) if that's what you mean, but no F#] Dan

As your man Mr Llloyd says, hitting those killer notes that spell out a mode can make you sound just 'right'. Over a Cmj7#11 chord, play in the lydian mode and 'spell out' that #4 to 5. All of a sudden, you're playing the chord and not just the triad. I'm sure there's a list of chords relating to modes, if not I'll knock one up. Dan

I've frequently found when I have an attack of GAS, its not me wanting a new bass, but me wanting something new musically. If you're suffering, hire a room, invite a few friends over and have a jam. Creating something new is always more preferable to just spending more money. Dan

A sheet of perspex or similar and your local luthier is always a good idea (I planned a similar job to you but went with pimpin paisley from WD, however I still used my local luthier to cut and bevel the edges). He can trace your old guard and add any mods you need. DaN

Your 'battle scars' on your bass. That must be a comforting feeling. I let my basses get bashed to hell, it makes them feel like 'mine'. Dan

Re: Behringer (Sorry, I hope this doesn't turn into a hijack). EVERY piece of Behringer equipment I've owned has broken ON A GIG. I will NEVER buy Behringer again for live and touring work; it's just not worth it in the long run. I've had to replace everything. DaN

I bought an older Ibanez acoustic recently and as soon as I got it, I tightened the truss to try and straighten the neck a bit. When I rescue it from the depths of Liverpool (I left it at my guitarists house), I intend to do the same as I did with my acoustic guitar: Stand the saddle up on a desk as if it was in the bridge-slot and rest a flat edge against a bit of 2x2 wood. Place both on a sheet of fine sandpaper and holding the wood with your hands, use your thumbs to shift the saddle left and right, putting some pressure downward as you do. You'll maintain a flat angle and the sanding with be slow and controlled. Another tip is to colour in the bottom of the saddle with a graphite pencil, then you can check you're filing evenly as all the graphite gets rubbed of evenly. Dan
